On the outskirts of Tamil Nadu, and a 90-minute drive away from Bengaluru, is a village called Shoolagiri that is known for its eco-friendly community called Sanctity Ferme. To promote their vision of a natural ecosystem, sustainable model homes were planned for the residents. Flintstone6 is first of many such eco-friendly prototypes, designed to blend with the scenic untouched landscapes of the region.
#GlassInDesign is a series presented by Saint Gobain (‪@SaintGobainIndiaGlassBusiness‬ ) in association with #Buildofy
Design and construction during the thick of the pandemic posed a limitation that eventually became Flintstone6’s strength - the use of minimal materials all obtained from nature itself. It is part of the landscape itself. Each space in this 1935 sq.ft. home is connected to the outdoors, with natural cross ventilation and a dynamic palette of light and shadow patterns constant throughout the day.
To download the full PDF eBook of Flintstone6 House in Shoolagiri with floor plans, materials used, construction techniques and so much more, please visit:
www.buildofy.c...
The poured earth debris walls, inverted stair room, and washrooms inside the bedrooms are some key highlights of the project. Principal Architect walks us through the home, insightfully breaking down the material palette as well as the design challenges that give this sustainable home an edge over most in this country.

And so many low level vents in an area filled with trees n shrubs is like giving an open invite to the reptiles like snakes, insects n etc... Just a honest review... But design n architecture is 💯....

Message to the architect & crew & the willing client… Stellar design! I totally appreciate everything you were aiming to do as I tell my gardening clients that I need to spend that kind of time to build their gardens, if they want stellar like this. Not that it’s not possible to install an effective landscape all at once over a week or month depending on scope… but, I personally don’t have the crew or equipment for larger scale instant installs… and those usually need adjustments later and the maintenance. The designs created by people such as yourself who are willing to take the time to consider the environmental location over a year… gets the best results. Truly wonderful!

I love how this house is made from real materials and not something trying to act like it's something that it's not; it's very true to itself in that way. I also love the aesthetics of the place and the design decisions that have been made. On top of it all it's pretty and functional but not overbearing; so it's not a big showpiece that screams "LOOK AT ME", but nonetheless it's very pretty

it's so streamlined and chic but also earthy and cool! i love the casuarina roof! the glass bathroom! and the fact the he wanted to asses the building while living in it. commitment! sadly only rich clients can allow architects to use their spaces. not so crazy about the glass in the living area coz people might walk into the glass but there are ways around it like adding potted plants/sculptures in danger zones =] bravo!

This looks absolutely majestic..................But I am just wondering how does someone maintain such place on a day-to-day basis. There would be so much dust coming in, not to mention so many insects just wandering into the house all the time. This looks like more of a vacation stay rather than a proper house to stay in.

These houses usually cost a fortune to build. The architect's fee alone will be more than the cost of a normal house in the village. So it stands to reason that only very rich people can afford these houses and they usually hire an army of people to maintain the house or else it's all for nothing.

The Flintstone6 house is a commendable effort in sustainable architecture, aiming to seamlessly blend with the natural environment of Shoolagiri. However, extensive use of glass walls, while aesthetically pleasing and providing a strong connection with the outdoors, could lead to significant heat gain, especially in India's hot and humid climate. Despite the use of low-e glass to reduce heat gain, it might not be enough to counteract the intense sunlight. This could potentially make the house uncomfortably hot during certain times of the day or year. The greenhouse effect created by the glass could trap heat inside the building, making it hot and humid in the evenings, even with open windows for ventilation. The use of earth and debris as building materials provides excellent thermal mass, which can help moderate indoor temperatures. However, these materials are not particularly good insulators. This means that while they can absorb and slowly release heat, they might not prevent heat from the outside from entering the house, or heat from the inside from escaping. This could result in a less than optimal thermal comfort inside the house. Integrating existing trees into the design of the house is a wonderful way to preserve the natural environment. However, as trees grow and their roots expand over time, they could potentially affect the structural integrity of the house. Additionally, trees can attract insects and other pests, which could become a problem for the house, especially considering the extensive use of glass and the potential for open windows and doors for ventilation. Some design decisions, such as the glass partitions between bathrooms and the lack of a central courtyard, were criticized. The glass partitions might not provide enough privacy, and there could be other ways to bring the view of the trees into the house, such as through the use of courtyards. The lack of a central courtyard could also impact the efficiency of ventilation in the house. Despite these potential issues, it's important to note that the Flintstone6 house is a prototype and a stepping stone to new projects. The embodied energy of the house is likely very low due to the use of materials from the surroundings, including the glass. However, the design could benefit from further consideration of thermal comfort and ventilation, as well as the long-term implications of integrating trees into the structure of the house.
