Your first choice is right. The GTI is reliable if you treat it right. Get a clean car and you won't regret. Plus it has good power for a first timer and has options wide options build.

Maybe do a full conversion, very costly, because you may have to change the gearbox, so engine and harness, will cost you 125k get a 2004/2006 {ej20 with a tdo4), gearbox complete 30k {4 speed} , if it's an auto and you need a manual conversion have 85k, because of the plates, pedal and other cosmetics. After that you need some breaking power get the stock wrx calipers 2 port and 4 port with disks, get the 4 ports {35k}, You need a tuner to get max power out of the engine that will cost you 20k, now that you have more power, on a small engine, you need to monitor, oil pressure, boost, water temp, get the small budget gauges, they will total you around 22k. also a BOV but a BPV is better, it doesnt lose air like bov so no spooling. other costs including a HKS back box 4" got one at 10k, bell mouth 1500, through pipe 6k, air-con filter 12k, plug 7k, oil 8k. with this simple set up you should be pumping out 290/310HP. if you have good money do a full STI swap.
