He may be older than he was when he played westley, but he will always be the farm boy of my heart. No matter what age.

When you watch the film and see him and Patinkin at work, you realize how special it is that it’s really them doing the fighting. It takes you back to times when you had actors like Tyrone Power or Basil Rathbone, who were always doing swashbuckling movies because they WERE fencers, and because having them in it was how you made it look real. You can tell these two were not real fencers and it was more choreography, but they did such a great job with it that they still sold it fantastically.

I fenced in college. My team had a sword fighting film series to raise money, so I saw a whole bunch of swashbuckling films. By far, my favorite - as a fencer - was Scaramouche. The fencing in that is beautiful. It turns out the guys who put this together thought the same thing, because Scaramouche was the scene they wanted to better, and they did produce the best duel on film, which it might very well have been one-handed, but they did it two, which is insane.

At the time it was the longest sword fight on film. Maybe it still is. They practiced, then they showed it to Reiner one day when they were up to speed. Reiner said great, but it's too short. Make it longer. So they looked up the longest fencing scene, and made their scene longer. Elwes and Patinkin did the whole thing themselves. No stuntmen except for the one flip in the air. All the sword work was the actors. Also, all the schools of fencing that they mention during the fight are/were real schools of fencing.
@jaffarebellion292 Жыл бұрын
As far as I know, Revenge of the Sith's final duel is longer, and it was the longest in film history at the time, but that was almost 20 years ago, so something even longer could've come along.
@kingzach7411 ай бұрын
@@jaffarebellion292Yeah but the Revenge of the Sith fight was so much flashier and stupid compared to the Inigio vs Westley fight.
@jaffarebellion29211 ай бұрын
@@kingzach74 I mean, when the swords literally glow, flashiness is kind of a given. Also, while there were some dumb exchanges, the fight was mostly solid from a choreography standpoint. Shadiversity has a fantastic breakdown where he goes frame by frame, and most of the strikes make sense given the intent of the combatants. Obi-Wan is fighting primarily defensively, while Anakin is mostly going for killshots. Both have good footwork, solid guards, and make precise attacks. It's a good fight.
@captainjefferies90478 ай бұрын
@@kingzach74 That fight is brilliant and you think otherwise that is your failing.
@jamesrawlins735Күн бұрын
While The Princess Bride's sword fight is one of the best, it actually lasts only 3 minutes long. Up to the sword fight in Revenge of the Sith, the longest fight was in the 1952 movie Scaramouche, lasting almost 8 minutes. There are seven sword duels in the film and every single one is very different. I don't really count lightsaber duels in film the same way because so much depends on lighting and special effects.

its weird how his accent goes to British and then American at times. Time in America has changed his British accent

in other interviews he mentions how the fight had to be considerably lengthened per Reiner and ......he had to finish some of his training with a broken toe I think it was. THAT is a story all unto itself. I recommend getting his book As you Wish if you want some funny behind the scenes stories.
@sorscha130814 сағат бұрын
Yeah, i'll second that. Great book. Yes, it had to be lengthened because they got too good and smashed through it in 'real time' ie quick. So they had to add extra choreography and try to slow themselves down a bit.

I saw "Saw" in 2004, and i saw it now and i'm here only because i want to see Cary Elwes how he looks like now, that's all :)...Saw 1 (2004)...Saw 8 (2017). An other horror movie that i like is Split (2017), but this time the hero incarnate a person with a really bad and dangerous illness that exists in our world but many of us don't know about (psychiatry). That illness or disorder has degrees, and "Split" relates the "24" case -if i remember well- which is the highest. You can see on KZbin the real face of the man who is sick by this "24"(....). To know the meaning of this "24" read the synopsis of the movie. Bear in mind that reading only the synopsis may harm some people psychologically and emotionally!. If you like true history, watch "Valkyrie", a great movie. In a nutshell, some of the great commanders in Hitler's army tried to kill Hitler during World War II. If you like robotics and visual effects watch "Pacific Rim" (both are good but the first one is the best). If you like electronics, read this book "electronic principles" by Albert Paul Malvino (there are many editions, i have the 5th edition in my home)
