Sadly, I have to say I initially found this film disappointing, although I've watched it again since and can recognise it has its good points. I just felt that there was far too much emphasis on the relationship between Vera and Roland and it felt one-dimensional and heavily romanticised as a result. Vera was close to her brother, Edward (she, in fact, left instructions that her ashes be scattered on his grave after her death). Nevertheless, this relationship is not as prominent as it should be in the film, although I do recognise the limitations time-wise with film as opposed to a TV series. For me, the 1979 BBC series will always be the best version of 'Testament of Youth'. I can only recommend that people view the series on YT where all five episodes are available. Younger viewers might find it slower-paced but it's worth a view and Cheryl Campbell's acting is a tour de force. Better still is to read the book which really brings home the grief experienced by the author.

Acting was better when the 1979 series was made, writing was better, yes, we just don't have what they had then. Society has deteriorated for many reasons, and one very important aspect of this is the current inability of most people, even trained actors and writers to really portray deep feeling, conviction, philosophy--we have become superficialized. Many reasons for this, but our culture suffers for it. Because life was simpler (or something), people were more focused and sincere about everything in life. We don't take much seriously and sincerely now, except our images on instagram. Do I exaggerate? I hope so. The time we should spend reading, thinking, relating truly to others and building on real ideals we spend wallowing in highly flawed technology which drags us down to its level.
