Patrick Paige saying Hades could be played by a tenor is so freaking funny to me
@Robb36365 жыл бұрын
presumably he means putting the notes up an octave. But you're right, it loses its power if it's not this gravely deep underground voice.

Amber’s speaking voice is a lot different than her singing.
@stephpiano29085 жыл бұрын
Back when she didn't really do interviews and make public appearances (it's still pretty rare for her) I thought she might be a bit tough in real life because her acting persona is so convincing. But she's genuinely so lovely and motherly. I had the insane luck to meet her and can confirm that she exudes such a gorgeous presence. Same with Patrick, I was absolutely terrified to meet him because his Hades is so convincing but he is such an incredibly lovely and thoughtful human.
@emalaw1329 Жыл бұрын
It's interesting, cause the first time I heard Livin' It Up on Top on the album, since I'd never seen what Amber looked like, I was fully picturing Kate Bush singing as Persephone, with that kind of gravelly timbre she used to put up for some of her more aggressive pre-Hounds of Love cuts. The two women's speaking voices couldn't be more distinct, yet when using that sassier, more raucous tone color, they end up sounding eerily similar.

Amber seems like the really fun and goofy and fiercely protective bestie, and Patrick seems like the very calm, collected, patient friend that is the voice of reason you can’t help but love. They’re opposites, but in the best way possible. Yin and yang. Chocolate and vanilla. Their personalities just complement each other so well, and I think Anaïs did a splendid job of casting. i totally agree with what amber said about composing for women’s voices. i’ve never heard songs that fit so well with my voice until this musical.
@emalaw1329 Жыл бұрын
I'm curious, is it really not frequent for a female composer to be better at writing in ranges that are comfortable for women? I've had Waitress and Fun Home on my to-watch/listen list for the longest time and haven't gotten around to them yet, but I'd have to believe Sara Bareilles and Jeanine Tesori would understand vocal challenges for female voices more than, say, a Rodgers, a Webber, or even a Sondheim...

I'm glad Patrick talked about the heavenly/underwordly contrast of Hades and Orpheus! Because if anyone compliments Patrick for his deep voice, they should also give due to Reeve who really worked on his iteration of Orpheus who's established in mythos as an otherworldly singer, the best singer in fact. People who say he's the weakest link are just so used to beltings without realizing CONTROL is so much harder.

I always find it amusing how Americans tend to think about the southern wall when discussing the 'Why We Build the Wall' song, while I, as a Russian, first go to USSR's Iron Curtain, and then maybe Berlin Wall. I mean, it makes perfect sense that everyone thinks of the wall that is most relevant to their history and culture first, but at the same time it's kind of amazing how well the song works for *a* wall, just any in general.

Another Socialist musical which I refuse to see, no matter how artistically worthy the play may be. I do not want blatant politics spit in my face for 2 hours on stage.
@harperweedon26805 жыл бұрын
Hey, I just wanted to let you know that that’s not what it is! It’s an amazing musical, most of which is completely apolitical. The people interviewing the actors always just focus on the political aspects-because that’s the most sensational aspect-but it’s in no way heavy-handed. First and foremost it’s a story about love, and a great one at that. It has subtext of criticism of the worst aspects of capitalism, but it doesn’t ever mention socialism. I don’t know if you’ve listened to the live soundtrack of the 2016 off-bway workshop, but it gives you a good idea of how it relates to politics. There is a song called “Why We Build the Wall” but it was written in 2006, and when written, it wasn’t about physical country borders, it was a reference to the archetype of the ruler who keeps out others with a wall. The politics are there, but it’s not ever heavy-handed and it’s a fundamentally beautiful show-one I definitely recommend.
