Sonny started this career in rugby league. He changed to rugby union later and took up boxing in the off season. Hes since gone back and forth a couple more times between league and union. He's currently playing league. The shoulder charge was legal in league when he first started but has since changed.

Sonny bill is also noted for his offload skills. He purposely tries to attract two or three tacklers, leaving others on his side open. Then he passes the ball to an open teammate at the last instant. Beautiful to watch!

Most of the clips shown were of Rugby League, when such hits were legal. I believe that is no longer the case. When he came over the Rugby Union, while his bulk still meant he could break tackles, it was his ability to offload the ball with 2-3 defenders hanging on to him, that made him a very good player. Unfortunately, his League history cost us winning the British Lions (Rugby Union) tour, as a brain fade saw him shoulder charge (not allowed) an opponent, to the head (really not allowed). 14 against 15 at international level is a difficult ask! Certainly an individual built for sports!

People who are really good at tackling have a natural knack to time their opponents steps so you will see they will hit them just as a foot is landing on the ground. The other detail is the angle either approach from the side or below their opponents center of gravity. Tackling well is super technical as well as being tough

The Shoulder Charge is now illegal in NRL (Rugby League) Its softened over the years.. Its also the same in Rugby Union, the rule states that the tackler has to wrap his hands around the ball carrier.. So, if theres no attempt to wrap in the tackle, then thats deemed illegal. Sonny Bills hits was such a craze, during school time rugby we call shoulder hits by his name - "straight Sonny Bill'd him!" EXTRA This dude went from NRL (league) to play union for the All Blacks. So he's played 3 sports professionally, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Boxing

The shoulder charge wasn’t banned just because of SBW let’s be honest although he was great at it. There were many great shoulder charge proponents before SBW. The sport just evolved to match the safety concerns of the day and protect club money invested in their players. I miss the old enforcers and the big hits tbh tho.

Shoulder charges are banned in League now (and now Union) .... got to "wrap" the player with your arms when tackling. When SB Williams transitioned from League to Union, he found it hard initially because he was getting penalised for the occasional shoulder charge ... he was too used to doing them.

There’s two types of shoulder tackles that are allowed and not allowed. If you’re leading into a tackle just with your shoulders that is not allowed all . But if you’re leading with a shoulder followed by your arms then it’s allowed but yeah back in the day Sonnybill would just use the shoulder which me to keep interesting to watch and fun

You should watch a video of him in attack. He is arguably the greatest offloader of all time, especially in Rugby Union. Ridiculously skilful as well as stupidly strong. He’s genuinely one of the greatest athletes in history. He’s played Rugby League, then Union, then 7s - which are all very different sports with different physical demands. Then to do Boxing at the same time is crazy. He’d have been a great in the NFL if he played that. Watch a video of Jason Robinson, he’s the best runner I’ve ever seen and another player who played both League and Union at the highest level.

theres a video of nrl players listing off the hardest hitting defenders theyve played against and sonny was in nearly everyones list, dude hit like a truck, he was a defensive monster and was known for his ability to open up space for his team mates, sonny knew that with his big size he will usually need more than one defender to stop him so he used this to his advantage as he would force teams to double team him by the lines he would run and when 2 defenders would commit to tackling him he would give the offload (quick short pass) while he was going down, dude was big challenge for teams to prepare for, changed how teams had their defence to combat his offloads and then sonny would destroy players morale on offense by just tanking everyone and making his presence very known while on defense. hes a back (more elusive players who are quick and make most of the teams metres in games, also tend not to commit to the ruck as they have to reset and get ready for the next play), due to being a back sonny has a lot of room to gain speed and look ahead to see which gaps he wants to open up for his team mates, dude was slept on and hated for a bit being called scummy and a bully but has very much matured now and has a family and is more of a veteran now instead of a young star

The tackle was legal back then i cant remember what year it was changed though. And any contact with the head is a penalty and although those tackles look high they were actually legal he makes contact with the torso or ball SBW was just a master class at the shoulder charger he made it look that way

He’s very skilled! If you like his hits, check out his offloads. My favorite SBW moment was watching him after winning the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He was walk-ing off pitch afterwards and a kid ran onto the field and grabbed by security within an arms length of SBW. SBW told the security it was ok and picked the kid up and walked him back to the stands. Not only did he give the kid his beanie, but he took off his medal from winning his 2nd RWC, and placed it around the kid and walked off. That made that kid’s life! Eventually, that medal was returned to SBW later. Solid dude!

Representing NZ in both rugby league and with the All Blacks in rugby union is as rare as hens teeth, him and Brad Thorne are the only two guys to do it in the last 30 years. This is his shoulder charge collection but he revolutionised Rugby Union especially by introducing the 'chicken wing' offload, the backhanded pass that all players now use in their arsenal but was relatively unknown until Sonny Bill came on the scene. Shoulder charge is all about what the arms doing with the shoulder. Tuck the arm in then it’s a shoulder charge. You leave the arm out to wrap around after the shoulder then it’s a fair hit. Can’t beat a tackle from the axe Trevor gillmeister he just cut blokes in half back in the day.

His skill in offense is creating space and offloading, he was by the best big man or forward in NRL at making offloads. Many NRL coaches knew that, they always tried to stop him early once he touches the ball but the amount of people that has to take him down creates more problems for them and creates space for his teammates to be opened and recieve his offloads, that's why whenever he runs the ball you'll always see a teammate running with him bcs whenever he gets tackled, he will always finds a way to pass for an assist. I just wanted to point that out lol

When Sonny played Union I think those tackles were legal but in more recent times they're not they're ruled as Shoulder-Charges as U need to use Ur Arms in the Tackle & Tackles cannot be Shoulder & Head-height as a few Players had to retire early due-to too Many Concussions & Head-trauma related incidents.... So, World Rugby Commission has stated that Officials have to seriously Penalize Offenders (in all likelihood Yellow or Red Card) that endanger other Players with reckless-actions whether this be Tackling, Blocking Kicks, etc that may seriously injure or does injure Players Neck & Heads!!!!

Back in Sonnys day it was legal. He was the king of smacking people silly. Then he became religious & instead of showing his brute force, he instead used his skills rather than his muscles as he matured. Started playing with a lot of brains as he grew up. He’s a Legend in our game. Especially with ALL the hate he received after leaving the Canterbury Bulldogs. He was Australia’s most hated person. He beat Osama Bin Laden. No joke. There was a Poll made of who would be the Most Hated man in the country & Sonny got more hate than Osama Bin Ladin. Fast forward 2 years later… he shut everyone’s mouth up. Everyone. Literally. Even his supporters couldn’t believe his Greatness after he left the Bulldogs. He even became an All Black. Something only a small percent of boys & men get to achieve. Being an All Black is like being a Marine & fighting for your country. That’s high we place that All Black Jersey. It’s sacred to New Zealand & SBW made it. Playing under the Greatest #12 the All Blacks has seen in Ma’a Nonu.

He was footy player first then started boxing training then decided to have a go in the ring he is 6,3” and 115-120kg. I stopped playing when I was 14 and then started boxing for fitness and I was a gyprocker and I was 98kg when I was 18-21 and then I started my own business and I got up to 108kg fit. I would do 8-10 hours work go home and then jog for 10 kilometres then go to boxing gym for 2-3 hours. One day I was in the city and the Queensland side were walking towards me and a guy I worked with and he stepped to the side out of their way and I walked through the middle and my mate couldn’t believe they all got out of my way and then said we could do with couple of guy’s built like him. They said that they wouldn’t like to tackle me either and they said did you see his fucken legs and my mate said he doesn’t even lift weights he is like that from working jogging and boxing training and then they said he is a country boy isn’t he and my mate said yep and he from NSW I didn’t know they had chatted to my mate as I was going to the toilet and when I came back out I walked down to my mate and they asked how did I get so big without weights. I said I used to pig hunt just about every weekend when I was younger and only dogs and knives and if there wasn’t any houses to plaster inside I would go tuna fishing and catch up to 140-150kg and also polling and you stood at the end of the boat and you would hit the water with new hook and small tuna from 10-30kg would bit and you would flick them over your head into the boat and you would do 1-11/2 hour turns and that’s how it started I just got bigger from then and they all said how hard do you work and my mate said he cuts all of the sheets for upstairs and keeps 5 guys working flat out all day and no one helps pass a single sheet.

Shoulder charges ard illegal in Rugby League because of SBWs overuse and misuse of his shoulder. It's a deliberate tactic and I believe it's because he's shit at tackling. I can't remember ever seeing him do a decent tackle around the legs or a flying tackle. He uses his size to knock players over.
