German Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger I (SD.KFZ. 181) Ausfuehrung E, Kit DTW 111:1398. This is the display version with interior details built many years ago by my father. (It’s been fighting the good fight in the basement ever since. :-))
Dad had many different versions of Tiger I kits and built several of them. Here are a couple we’ve shared:
Tamiya 1/25 Tiger I model kit: • Tamiya 1/25 German Pan...
Tamiya 1/35 Tiger I build and model kit: • Built 1970 Tamiya 1/35...
Nichimo 1/30 Tiger I model kit: • 1970 Nichimo Panzerkam...
This 1/25 Tamiya he especially liked because of the individual track links. Unlike the 1/35 Tamiya tracks (which are stretched like a rubber band across the wheels), these tracks have a more realistic sag in them.
Details from the box:
Driver’s hatch on top of hull and gunner’s and commander’s hatches on top of turret are opening and closing type. The underside of the hatches are also precisely finished.
The inside of the gun turret including ceiling and walls, machine gun ammunition box, ventilator, and loading section of the 88mm gun are all precisely designed. The floor of the battle section is connected to the gun turret with a post and moves simultaneously.
The torsion bar is the same shape as the actual vehicle and the suspension utilizing the distortion elasticity, is made on the same principle as the Tiger I tank. Three wheels are mounted on one shaft and the layout of alternate combination of multiple wheels is unique for German tank. This suspension not only supported the weight of the tank which was 60 tons but also worked effectively in parallel with the wheels and showed excellent roadability. The vertical movement of the wheels may be clearly seen in the kit.
The interior construction of the tank includes driver’s seat, various levers and handles, meters and gauges, ammunition boxes on both walls and upper engine parts on rear of dynamic engine parts on rear of vehicle.
The connecting type polyethylene caterpillar is of dynamic shape and greatly improves the appearance of the tank.
