Built to Burn consists of a texture growing with great purpose to a massive climax. However, the texture is eventually shredded to pieces and everything is burned, leaving nothing but smoke and remains of thematic material. In addition to this structure, the composition focuses on the contrast of symmetry and asymmetry in regards to form, rhythm, harmony, and tempo. This results in extremely contrasting sections that are linked together through rhythmic and harmonic consistencies.
