Hi Oswald. I think a lot changed. I guess back in the 1970s they did not use the loudspeaker for prayercall but instead still the drums (bedug). Also the people dress very differently now. It would have been nice seeing Indonesia back in the 1970s. On the other hands, the roads today are probably much better. How was your trip to this region back then?

Bukittinggi is where my mother comes from, her hometown. We as a whole clan visited it often in the past. Last year i was there with some family members for the festive season, Eid al Fitr. I think it's a nice small city with nice weather. The market, Pasar Atas/Ateh especially, is very interesting. I love to hang out there when i'm in town. It was also there where i tried Es Tebak, a local dessert for the first time. Soooo delicious!!. You of course can also try many other local dishes at or around the market like Nasi Kapau, a famous one or satay or Katupek Pical aside of Rendang. For those who enjoys shopping, there are many kind of Souvenirs to buy. One pair of leather sandals made in Bukittinggi for example. I believe (and hope) you had some fun in Bukittinggi. And in the Datuak costume you wore in the video 😁

@@DjemoGraphic Grüezi, i just found out that you comes from Switzerland 😃 I coincidentally spent around a year late 90s studying at SHMS in Caux/Montreux near Geneva. Well, to be honest, It's not lucky, but i feel sort of proud to have half of my origins in Minangkabau, West Sumatra. Not only because of the beauty and the uniqueness of the art and the land, but also because of the Matriarchy System which is rare in the world. As the daughter from a Minang mother, they will approve me as a Minang woman too. I by the way also want to visit West Sumatra again, or Bukittinggi to be exact, somewhen in the future. I miss the Es Tebak very much. Besides, i would like to see the Janjang Koto Gadang, the little China Wall close to Ngarai Sianok which i never seen before (have you been there the last time?) 😊
@DjemoGraphic4 жыл бұрын
@@intangilles5053 Oh wow nice! I hope you enjoyed your time there back then. I agree, the culture and matriarchy are something very unique in the Minangkabau tradition. So your family name is from your mother right? I am sure during your time in Montreux you went to explore the Lavaux? I just published the newest video about this place.
@intangilles50534 жыл бұрын
@@DjemoGraphic Hahaha... Anyway i see and touch the snow for the first time there, in Switzerland 😁 I think i had never been to Lavaux, yet i had been to some places like Zürich, Geneva, Bern, Lucerne (big cities, so no wonder 😆) Wengen and Lugano. From which canton do you come by the way? I use paternal family name although it does not appear in my passport or ID card... It is not that common here to use family name after all. Only your own given name. Don't know why... And even in Minangkabau i believe they also tend to use paternal family name... And just curious, Have you visited Balikpapan or Borneo? Balikpapan stand on my 'where to visit next time in Indonesia' list beside Labuan Bajo 🙂
@DjemoGraphic4 жыл бұрын
@@intangilles5053 I cocme from Canton of Schaffhausen. I am very happy to hear that you visited so many places in Switzerland. Wengen is really cool. Lugano city is okay, the region and scenery though is fantastic :) I yet have not visited Balikpapan, but I went to Sabah, Brunei and Sarawak, sadly not yet explored the Indonesian site of Borneo. But it's on my list: Banjarmasin, Pontianak and Balikpapan :) Labuan Bajo and rest of Flores looks very stunning. I am in particular interested in the culture of the people there.
