Since you asked, the Slavic culture spread from north to south, so there would be some Slavic influence in the Balkans. The Slavs were technically just the people of eastern Europe. We associate them with Russia because that's the most powerful Slavic country, and the USSR took back a lot of Slavic territory.

By the way we are in no way related to russia except that we are slavic. They just use the alphabet we created (they modified it and there is nothing wrong with that). The reason we have the word grad (city, town) is because our language has slavic history.

Just quick FYI, Bulgaria is not influenced by Russia in the way you would think. Historically Bulgaria gave a lot to the Russians, the Tsar title, which was originally Bulgarian and it is the Slavicized pronunciation of Caesar. The cyrillic alphabet, which was invented by the Greek brothers Cyril and Methodius, the alphabet was intended for Great Moravia, however things didn't work out. The brothers then got captured in there, their students managed to flee to Bulgaria, where the Bulgarian Monarch who LOVED literature and reading books wanted an alphabet for his people, so he wouldn't have to rely on the Greek one. So with the students of Cyril and Methodius they made the old cyrillic alphabet. During the time the first Bulgarian Empire was experiencing a Golden Age and by the time it was a Slavic Superpower, which then had huge influence on many Slavic states and peoples. The cyrillic was adopted by both Serbs and the Rus principalities. The Russian influence on Bulgaria is only a recent thing that happened in the past ~150 years, since they were the ones who freed us from Ottoman rule.
