At the time, Bulgaria was still competitive whereas Greece was just beginning to taste their first World Cup experience... yet now Bulgaria is so weak today whereas Greece, despite remains not a big name, crowned the European title in 2004.

Everybody expected Bulgaria to be more successful after the 1994 world cup. Boy a lot of people were wrong and surprised to this day (2024).

Greece is as weak today as Bulgaria. Their peak was middle 2000es after that they crumble the way Bulgaria did. The Balkanian football in general is in the decline since early 2000es with the exception of the Croats who kept developing and working with their talents while the rest totaly leave this policy. If wasn't for new euro championship rules Albania and Romania would not qualify either, while Serbia despite have impressive list of talents and stars as players on matches are total disappointment and haven't achieved anything except appearences from time to time ( Last year they bearly save themselfs from being beaten by the Bulgarians two times in one year).

It's kind of silly using the word "competitive" given the fact that this Bulgarian team detroned world champion Germany(future Euro champion) and eliminate France(future world and euro champion), Mexico and Argentina, reached semifinals and ended up as bronze medalist and fourth place( achievement equal to that of England for the last 50 years ...) While Greece in Euro 2004 was 90% of the time ugly defensive football and wins 0:1 , no big names and talents , just some underdogs from mostly Greek local clubs. This heroic no doubt about it but far from a "powerhouse" in the way you are trying to suggest. Also during that time most of the favorites for the euro where in very bad shape or with declining generations witch lead to a historical chanse for the smaller teams to get through. Denmark and Czech Republic also have done it and with far more difficult oponents. And finally we are 2024 not 2004. So your remark is completely inadequate since Greece today has noting to do with the Greek team from 2004. Modern Greek team is very much on the level of today Bulgarians and Romania and this is visible from the result. Just a month ago they where eliminated from Georgia .

At a national level, it’s about the same. At a club level, Romania. Staua won the 1986 champions league and a Bulgarian team has never made it past the quarter finals. Although CSKA Sofia did slay some giants back in the 80s, including a Liverpool team that won 4 out of 6 championships leagues.

Bulgaria has performed better historically. Bulgaria's best WC finish was 4th, Romania's was 6th; Bulgaria had a WC top scorer and Ballon'dor winner (Stoichkov), Romania didn't; Bulgaria has 2 medals from the Olympics in football, Romania has none. Romania's only edge is euro finishes and peak fifa ranking.
