Bulk carrier discharge of Corn on the Fermita, Mount Maunganui New Zealand

A short video I made while discharging The Fermita Bulk Crago vessel loaded with Corn Monday evening on Berth 8 Mount Maunganui Wharf. The weather was touch and go and towards the end of the night, the rain beat us to a cleanout. Thanks to all who I work with and for putting up with me and my company for helping me air these videos. Any comments are welcome good or bad I will always do my best to reply as soon as I am able.

What a great reply and thanks so much for the kind words. Its our summer here now and starting to wind down with work as the forestry guys break up for Xmas hols. I myself have a couple of weeks off to do some chilling time in the North Island here in NZ. The world has turned into a place with not much good news to be heard now but as you say we keep the world moving in the ports and its good for outside people to watch and see an inside veiw. Nice Video! It must take an eternity to unload a ship on that way. I thought they use big "vacuum cleaners" (or elevators?) for that. But perhaps that depends on the habour. Keep on filming!

Surprisingly quick unloading with the grabs. Might take about 4 days and nights to complete weather permitting that is 🤙

In The comercial quay on the Rio Grande Brazil city, brasil, we not use the bulldozer inside the hold, this machine it's a very slowly, hear discharge 9k tons in 14 hours, inside the hold we use other type of machine, Volvo L70 ou case w20.

Hello and many thanks for comment. Depends on product and gangs. Say we have 3 gangs for 12 hours, we should discharge up to 6000 for the shift. Average discharge rate for our grabs is 100-200 per hour per gang. We would have to have 4 gangs on wheat and trucks under hoppers constantly to get close to 9000. Could be do able tho if you had the trucks. We find the digger option works much quicker at clean out than anything else but then again all depends who is operating it 😂🤙

How risky is the use of the combustion engine in the excavator around the grain dust? I know grain dust is very explosive, but maybe it doesn't ignite easily from hot surfaces on the engine?

There is always a risk of fire working in and around these products so we do have precautions in place also fire extinguished on the machine and a quick hook up to get the machine out. We haven’t had any explosions here but I do know of other ports having them. Worth keeping your eyes open and also make sure you have both escape routs open and ready 😜🤙

Hell mate, great video's.As a machine operator I was wondering what type of grease is used in the excavators from a contamination point of view, what would happen to the cargo in the event of a hydraulic hose failure?

Hi Dave I’m not to sure about the grease is used but the oils are all mineral I believe encase of any spillages. Keep watching I will make more in the New Year 😜🤙🍻

It can be quite stressful up in the cab sometimes but most nights we have a good run. Below decks are by far the hardest to achieve
