These are movies as far as I’m concerned ahead of their time 50 to 75 years better than what movies are supposed to be and have been.

At 72 years of age, I remember when the song “Searchin’” by the Coasters came out. It had a line in it that went, “I’m going to walk right down that street like Bulldog Drummond.” Until the advent of the Internet, with being able to see the actual lyrics, I was not sure what they were saying. Even after learning the correct line, I still did not know who Bulldog Drummond was. I’m not THAT old! Now that I’ve discovered who he is, I’m going to enjoy watching his movies. Thank you for posting them!

The best BD movie (IMNSHO) is BD Strikes Back, starring Ronald Colman. The original talkie is also good (and also stars RC), although the silent-movie-style acting in that one can be annoying at times.
@101Volts2 жыл бұрын
Huh, I never knew about that song, thanks. There were a few Drummond movies in the early 1950s, but you would have been just a few years old then. Personally, I like this one and "Bulldog Drummond Comes Back" a lot. There are others I also like, but these two are highlights to me.

Ron, we grew up with those songs too.. Yes, "Bulldog Drummond" in the lyrics piqued our interest as well...then a few years ago I started watching these excellent films drawn in by the titles.... what fun!....

I just noticed the name H. B. Warner in the cast. Among other good roles, he played Mr. Gower, the druggist and “it’s a wonderful life,” and did a superb job.

So few likes? Hard to believe! Most viewers must like their murder straight; no comedy chaser! Of the Drummond movies I've seen, this is the funniest, imo. More suspense than mystery. That works!

I was disappointed initially especially as it is 54 mins and the filmmakers decide to include a montage scene featuring old footage but the second half of the film improved significantly from the first. There were even improvements from the last film notably the re-introduction of Heather Angel as Phylis and HB Warner as Nielsen of Scotland Yard which was a sizeable improvement on John Barrymore’s final outing. The film also had a good villain in the form of Leo G Carroll and I even warmed a little to John Howard.

Can't help thinking of Monty Python's "Algy" who was, shall we say, slightly more flamboyant! Speaking of Python, the actor who plays the professor here reminds a bit of Mr. Terry Jones.

Funny how he killed the man who found the "book' and yet he took the time to tie up the aunt and hit the butler-- makes little sense that Drummond couldn't figure that out.
@101Volts2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I follow the line of thinking, either. But he _was_ only recognized by the eccentric professor, and not the rest. Maybe he just hit Tenney since he wasn't seen by Tenney and it was quick and just as easy, and he tied up the Aunt... Because he didn't want to kill a woman? That's just a guess.

Rockingham Tower is an awfully big place....so why is Tenny the only servant ? Where are the maids, the cook, the chauffeur, etc.?
@101Volts2 жыл бұрын
Good point, but he wasn't to be the _only_ servant; another servant was on the way to the house, but got murdered by the antagonist. Still, I can understand your point that you would expect Rockingham Tower would also have at least a maid and a cook. Maybe they do, but they're just not mentioned.
