Cool. Just came across this video, have been using Wilson inline dies for about 25 - 30 years for seriously accurate ammo. Thanks!

I have a Micron die for my 6BRA. The die is easy to use and locks up nice and tight. It is expensive but we’ll worth it.

Anyone have any issues with it releasing the round after you seat the projectile?
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 5 ай бұрын
I've had that happen on several arbor dies and one of the causes can be a mis-match between your loaded round neck diameter and the die causing it to stick once the bullet seats. It can also be a mis-match at the .200 line that causes it. On rare occasion your seating stem is grabbing the bullet and 'suctioning' to the ogive if there's perfect surface area contact.

@@FClassJohn thanks! Did some quick testing, this was for 6.5 PRC. It only stuck on 135 ATIP’s and 153 bergers, it did not stick on 147 ELDM’s. I I marketed up the .200 line and neck with sharpie and got no marks. Key thing seems to be bullets. Seating was making a hell of a dent into the bullet and I didn’t have brass prepped at all as my intention was just to load a dummy round for .020 off the lands and try out the new die. Went back and chamfered three new cases and seated each of the three bullets and there was no stick. Seems it was the stem grabbing the bullets from excess pressure. All done with brand new Lapua brass.

@@FClassJohn I know you had said you used the micron sizing die as well. If I am not neck turning but am using Lapua brass, do you think just using their standard bushing die is enough? Or do you see value for the non turner in using an internal expander to size. Lastly, do you think the amount of neck tension really matters? Or is it more that it’s just consistent. Are there characteristics that you have seen or heard of that will diagnose when it is too much or too little tension. Thanks for the help!

When you say you can have one made for around $100. Would your smith do that? Or how is it done?
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 2 жыл бұрын
I said over $100 and realistically you can get a Wilson two different ways. You can either buy it already cut for a specific chamber which runs about $110 more or less on most sites and then if you really want (but not necessary) just hand ream if your reamer is really close to SAAMi spec Or you can buy the blank for $55-$75 depending on micrometer or not and have a gunsmith cut it with a reamer. In my case that would probably run somewhere around $150 or maybe a little bit more all in but every gunsmith charges their own fees so it would obviously vary.

@@FClassJohn roger that, thank you! I’ve been thinking about buying an arbor press but it’s a foreign topic to me on the dies. I run a weird caliber for PRS so I wasn’t sure if I could get them or not but sounds like I have an option!

Turn the die upside down, drop a case into it and then hold a straight edge across it. How big is the gap between the straight edge and the brass? The Wilson die is .010"-.015" or more. So when it is right side up, the shoulder is not really pressing against the die to center it. What do you think?
@Russell-1
@Russell-1 2 жыл бұрын
For the seater to be pressing against the shoulder of your case & having the base of the case flush with the base of the seater you’d have to have a seating die made for your specific sized case dimension.
@brettinnj
@brettinnj 2 жыл бұрын
@@Russell-1 By running your own reamer into the die as john talks about, you are customizing it. I don't think the customization would be complete without trimming the bottom. I may be wrong on this. I made the post looking for impute. That die is $300. I was wondering how tight the specs are. Even if you didn't run a reamer into the die, I have seen some dies with .020 + gaps. A gunsmith who is also a benchrest shooter pointed this out to me.

The real test is the target at 1000 yards. Can a measurable improvement be seen and backed up with data?
@williamallan4735
@williamallan4735 5 ай бұрын
Not realistic. For that to happen the way you want the head space would have to be perfect. Say there is 10 thous range to the head space and then you are going to bump the shoulder .001-.002 to make that a perfect fit to your loaded round would have to be a complete custom job. Even the it might be off some. I think if the movement between flush and in the die completely is less then half the length of the neck then you are good. This means that the neck is still fully supported.

So john you want to borrow something to give a review stating you don’t like it. You should only give negative reviews on something if it’s a bad product “ it doesn’t do what it says it does or if it does it for a week then breaks” other wise don’t review it don’t forget on the other end is a real person with a real family that eats or doesn’t based partly on you. You are a gentleman I trust you many do please stay responsible I’m not criticizing you per se I’m reminding you that cause has effect If your gonna be critical remind your viewers that Walmart makes money by stocking on purpose items made in china and will pass on made in America if they can make an extra penny and screw they’re own American customers who are also workers, enough politics, keep up the great job don’t take person In just reminding you of what you know.

I totally understand what you’re saying and I appreciate the comment. My intention isn’t to criticize the die, simply to say that it’s another way to achieve seating even if I don’t care for it. I know there are other people who probably will like it and it does offer some advantages for people who already own Whidden dies. I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with the die itself, I just don’t care for its operation but others might. But again, I appreciate what you are saying and I appreciate that you understand I’m just trying to be as honest as I can about products that I try out.

In today's touchy feely world... It really doesn't matter what you say... Someone is going to be offended. We all have preferences and for John to walk around on eggshells trying not to offend or hurt anyone's feelings or business is quite frankly, ridiculous to ask in my opinion. I personally produce a product and accept that some people will love it, while others will prefer and support another. This is what America is all about... Being able to express your opinions openly without having to constantly censored yourself. I always feel like the only person I have a right to tell how to behave... is myself.

MyAnalogLife - unfortunately I can’t agree with your ridiculous comments. A simple cup may not break & may hold liquid without leaking (hence ‘do the job’) but for some people it could be awkward to use due to the handle shape or location - something that would need to highlighted. The usability of any product is partly subjective but as many would find their experience similar it’s absolutely valid for a reviewer to explain what they didn’t like & why (the ‘why’ being especially important). You can find any number of reviews of shooting products that are nothing more than adverts & of little value to the potential buyer. I value John’s honest comments especially as he gives a balanced view & explains his reasoning.
