I absolutely love it when the villain's of Columbo go out of their way to explain why Columbo is wrong, by detailing every little piece of evidence which claims their innocence, like the trajectory of the bullet etc. which just further incriminates them in the process. No victim would ever speak like that!

True, they're usually wealthy people in positions of power who egotistically believe they've thought everything through and are convinced they can't be caught, so they act out defiantly to "prove" Columbo wrong and think nothing about it probably being wiser to react more as an innocent person would. Many times it's the lengths they go to set things up too perfectly or cover their tracks that leads Columbo to them.

um......i think it was one of the worst. Columbo is a great show, but some episodes are so stupid, like this one. Columbo "dug " the bullet out of the wall, yet the bullet hole is there perfectly clean as when the bullet went thru; not possible to dig out a bullet and the hole be still perfect. Had he really dug the bullet out of the wall, the hole would be all gouged, and the murderer would have seen that when he was staging the fake shooting. But the biggest thing is that firecracker; really? has no one ever played with firecrackers when they were kids?? that small room would smell like gun powder, there would be some smoke, and the damned fire cracker paper/remnants would still be all over the floor for everyone to see. Maybe these were magic firecrackers, that had no smoke, gun powder smell, and disappearing paper residue???
@terencehennegan1439
@terencehennegan1439 2 жыл бұрын
Ron Yeahright The fire cracker was lit on the balcony and the bullet was dug out from the adjoining room, had he dug it out from inside his room he wouldn’t have put him in checkmate.

@@terencehennegan1439 ....lit on the balcony about a foot outside the open slider door. Still no smoke? No smell? No obvious firecracker/paper residue on that tiled balcony floor??? Have you ever set off a firecracker before? The smell, the smoke, it lingers quite some time and these people all rushed into the room immediately. And I rewatched the entire clip; at no time does he say he dug the bullet out from an adjoining room, or inferred it. Had he done that, in true Columbo fashion he would have told the murderer that, to rub it in even more.

I always think it's great that when Columbo speaks to another "regular" person like himself, he's much more candid and straightforward with them. You start to realise how much he's not just acting coy with the high and mighty types, he's actually almost toying with them. It's one of those little touches that gives his character so much more depth. Falk played him brilliantly.

This was an entertaining episode but definitely not without it's flaws . This was a 90+ minute episode , while many others were 70+ , so you got a lot of unnecessary filler like that scene with the dentist . It felt like they shot it afterwards and just threw it in there to stretch out the running time .

I really enjoy listening to this, especially the last line which is cut off in this video. So I recorded it off some random channel recently, patiently waited through the show, and... the recording cut itself off before the last line too, because I didn't set it to record extra time at the end. All I want to hear is Columbo say, "You're under arrest, sir" and then the candidate closes his eyes and we hear the tick-tock motif and... AARGH!

The scripts were excellent, but Peter Falk was even better. This scene is masterclass stuff from him, but he did that routinely as Columbo. Only in the 70's though. The ones in the 90's just weren't the same.

It's more fantastic acting on the part of Peter. Note how he appears disappointed to actually prove the Senator guilty. It's like Columbo is wounded by the killer's evilness and lack of humanity. Columbo appears to almost wish that the Senator wasn't guilty. That's a damned hard act to produce. William Link, co-creator of Columbo has describe Falk this was, "Peter IS Columbo". In other words that through his own superior acting skills abd identification with the fictional persona of Columbo? Peter has BECOME the fine lieutenant.
