Okay I love this comment and this was my favorite line in Jill's video too but I'm left wondering! One of the most common and most jarring for Western audiences anime tropes is the constant embarrassment and self-ashamedness that characters do whether it's going full-chibi and shouting with those lines on the side of their face or getting a nose-bleed and stammering over their words at the mere suggestion of something mildly sensual. I'm not *super* sure of the sources but this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4q6fmR5osd0mpI ) led me to believe that there was a cultural difference in how embarrassment is perceived. Shame/Bashfulness in Japan is considered cute! To an anime character, incompetence might actually be considered sexy! Culturally!

@@spiffybumbleteeth Bashfullness and being ashamed can be cute in western contexts too. Of the top of my head though it does seem like that response being somewhat reasonable and believable is important, which is a big part of what makes the translation fail. Different cultural mores makes what is reasonable and believable very different, and make what's cute and childlike adorable in one culture seem incompetent, millstone-y and maybe mysoginistic in another.

It's trying way way way too hard to try to put them in sexually-suggestive positions, to the point it's just cringingly obvious. Like that weird dance move thing. Whatever those two are doing, it's not something normal people would do. They aren't dancing. They aren't fighting. They aren't screwing. The scene is trying to hit three targets at once and misses them all.

With the cinematography loudly broadcasting "she's very barefoot!" And the wide shots showing the glass vases I was expecting the course of the fight to be her demonstrating her superior fighting ability then Kar shattering a vase on the ground to show some protagonist ingenuity and get her stuck in one place for some tense dialogue. Lo and behold the two times she executed the exact same move that called attention to her lack of shoes was not two set ups for a payoff but actually just more poorly executed...sexiness? Idk but for sure not working.

[The cons of being in a romantic story arc with Kar (The guy, not the cat that isn't actually called Kar)]: -He's kinda of an asshole. Not the worst type, but still; -He will give you a cheesy early 2000's nickname that he thinks it's sexy; -He's totally ok with the idea of stealing something he thinks is special for you so he can pretend that he found it and try to have some gratitude sex; -He's totally ok with the idea of visiting you during the night without calling first; -He's totally ok with the idea of invading your house during the night (without calling first as well) and involve you in a conflict that is none of your business; -He will force you in a bad flirty fight (and dialogue) that the script will force you to think it's good; -The probability of you being stuck with him as part of a prophecy during, at least, the next 60 years is above zero (Yeah, you will be young and "bulletproof" and all, but still...60 years) [The pros of being in a romantic story arc with Kar (Again, the guy, not the-Oh, You got it already...)]: -He does gets better at the end. Yes, it takes around 1h44m in movie years to this, but he does. (I think...kinda...I'm gonna be honest, I'm just choosing to believe in the script for this one) -He learned why hot dogs used to came in packages of 10 while hot dog buns came in packages of 8 in the early 2000's US and, if that is not romantic, I don't know what it is; Anyway, thanks for introducing me to this movie, it was very entertaining. Really? Jill...you suffer SO much for your art!!!! You deserve cake. Your version is WAY BETTER. Was going to object to cutting the "you're a liar" line...only because that was her best bit of acting in the scene. Fast food employee: "My boss told me to change the sign, so I did" is the thinking behind the meandering around the room. The very unorthodox lapdance/pin she does on him is like PP and Zombies where Elizabeth spins to show off her underwear and then gets pinned at an angle to show her cleavage. The director wanted to make it "sexy-er". The girl has never fought. The director has never fought. Second unit director had the day off. The editor tried using "The Force" but wasn't all that connected to it.

Honestly, given the ending of the film, I'd have sprinkled in a few moments where they move like the others opposite. Made the fight a little bit longer, and while there is talking, have them slowly get more and more out of breath. As for the kitchen scene you talked about, I'd have it cut to it after she hits him on the table or something. They cut leads to him putting ice on his head as the monk talks.

The actor couldn't fight! Why the hell would you have a character whose gimmick is being the world's greatest martial artist, and then cast someone who knows *nothing* about fighting? I just don't understand that decision. I mean, they don't have to be a black belt. You can take a mediocre fighter and make them look much better onscreen. Thanks! That's a really good question. I think there is a quality that I find in some people which makes it easy to have chemistry with them, but I couldn't necessarily point to what it is exactly. It definitely relates to trust and comfort level, but it's not as simple as 'I like them' though I usually do. The actors playing Kar and Jade actually dated around the time of shooting the movie, so presumably they had liked each other enough to be in a relationship. But I would think that if you're under pressure and there are loads of people around and you're doing new things it can be very difficult to maintain that connection.

I'm guessing the lack of emotion on "what are you doing here" was possibly the director saying "sexier! sexier!" to the actress so she's just doing a random sexy voice which doesn't connect with what's going on on screen. I call this the "Natalie, you're beautiful!" impact where directors only give feedback on how attractive or sexy an actress looks and not on any other aspects which could lead to a good performance.

I love the movie, but I hate this scene. You are absolutely correct in that there is NO chemistry here whatsoever. The choreography is trash as is the dialog. The only good thing about the scene is the scenery. The set design is wonderful and should have been put to better use in the fight. Examples might be him trying not to actually hurt her by stopping her from falling into the fireplace after a phrase (add a bit more humor and opportunity for flirty dialog if he 'catches' her by grabbing the middle of that scanty little top she's wearing) or her trying to keep him from falling through the coffee table because, well, it's expensive and not hers.

Ms Jill, I enjoy your evaluations. :) I would say that I have seen some good actors with poor performances and I usually attribute that to bad direction. However I think this one is genuinely due to bad acting. Lol

In case it wasn't mentioned before, Vampire Angel and Gwen Raiden from "Angel" S3- E2 "Ground State" have a nice flirty fight. Both landing solid blows inbetween the banter, ending with Gwen (who has electricity powers and involuntarily shocks everyone that touches her skin) accidentally zapping the dried prune Angel has for a heart, into beating again. They then Immediately switch from punching to kissing.

I love this movie because of how cheesy it is, especially this scene, its bonkers. That part where she is like reverse spider mounted on him??? Insane

The sacrifices you make for the rest of us. Just listening to it and watching clips of the fight is already bad enough, but you actually have to make sense of it on our behalf.

I know they're not flirty fight scenes, but now I'd love to see your analysis on couples fighting together. (The first one I think of is the couple in Baby Driver when he cocks her gun while she's shooting, though you may have done that already? Regardless, I love it)
