Now that Vin’s Gymkhana GRiD M3 is running a Smeding-built LS engine, the poor rear differential just won’t be able to cut it. Not only is he swapping that out with an aluminum diff case from a S550 Mustang, he’s installing a hardcore steel limited slip differential from KAAZ. And by he, we mean with his buddies from Racecars Unlimited. Got a whole new subframe to support it, too. Parts list below...

A few things I learned after buying a KAAZ diff. They are set to 100% lock from the factory. If you want it to be a bit more chill for the street you can set it to 60%. The super Q does not require that crazy figure 8 break in. Kaaz tech support is awesome. Ask them, don't go to some forum with 30 different people giving their "educated" guesses.

Made 1000whp and ran 9s with factory e36 lsd in a full weight/interior 328 sedan. Did end up switching to e34 m5 diff cause options like this weren't available in 2006.

I dont understand why so many people think the factory 188mm bmw diffs are so weak. I know multiple cars pushing upwards of 1k rwhp running these diffs. Hell rob dahm is using one in reverse as his front diff on his 1700 hp awd rx7.

Love the video but what you guys are claiming about the stock ford Posi is incorrect. They actually lock up better than a Torsen style by far. The reason why some people think they are open diffs is because you have to replace the clutches in them at the correct service interval or they will become a one wheel peel. With Cobra clutch packs those diffs lock up way harder than any other posi to the point where I would sometimes wheel hop turns because there was so little slip.

@@thethepete731 EXACTLY lol like I had a fx4 lvl 2 ranger that came with a factory Torsen that struggled to lock up the 33x10.5’s I had on the back of it. Swapped it for a trac lok diff with cobra clutches and then I could throw the back end out whenever where ever.

Making me wanna keep my 6.0 ls swapped e36 but it's super expensive to do an upgraded diff, axles, etc. Maybe like $5k then brakes $3k etc. I'll mostlikely sell it and do a 135i , slightly more modern and stronger from factory.

Vin all s550 mustangs use a trac lok differential which uses carbon fiber clutches. Performance pack, cars use Torsen lsds. All rwd cars are one wheel drive until there is a variance between the two wheels, than it engages. The aluminum housing 3.15 is out of an automatic Mustang. The iron case is for the mt82 6 speed. Ford sure knows how to build a rear end pretty much better than an oem manufacture.

Do newer 8.8 rears still use C clips to retain the axles? If not how are they retained?

The irs 8.8s like this one don’t use anything to retain the axles besides them being the right length. IIRC the newer 8.8s have 34 spline axles now just like the 9.75s but the solid axles still use C clips.

It's a clutch type lsd..... Not 'like an lsd' it's literally a limited slip diff. That spring preloads the clutches.

Look bmw makes great cars but they aren't indestructible. Ford is known for their reliable rear diffs. Even the BMW expert there said it would be stronger. It is cheap because those ring and pinions are used in mustangs, and F150s, basically options straight from the factory.

You have never run one of those diffs on a track. They open up and feel like an open diff when you lift a wheel, you can lose drive out of a corner because of that. Clutch diffs are better for track use and super easy to rebuild and change things like your preload, ramp angles and such.
