In episode 2 of this Montana Deer and Elk hunt with Randy Newberg, he is back at it chasing elk for a few days. He starts the day off getting stuck on the snowed in road, on the way to the trailhead. After getting himself unstuck, he loads his gear and hike an hour or so in to a glassing knob to look for a bull.
Again he is solo filming this hunt, which adds a whole other level of difficulty to the task. Upon arriving to the glassing spot, he locates a bull right away. Unfortunately, he is bedded a couple hundred yards on private. Randy decides to check out some other spots and cover as much country as possible.
Over the next couple days, he is able to locate elk. He spots one group of 4 bulls that is actually on public land, but getting there poses the biggest challenge due to public and private land boundaries. With multiple elk located, Randy had to decide which is his best option, giving him the best odds of filling his freezer with a public land bull.

2nd that. Randy is one of the few popular hunting personalities on KZbin or TV that can be counted on when it comes to standing up for self guided hunters. He also publicly supports the 2nd amendment, while many of his industry colleagues are quiet on both these fronts.

1st... I'm glad you're ok Randy. Stay healthy. Without health, you got nothing. "My pack is too heavy" says every elk hunter. LOL!! "Elk hunters. We're not all there". Nope. We certainly are not. 🤣 I'd have no issues taking a deer over a bull especially if the opportunity presented itself and I was by myself. Thank you for sharing and yes, please thank Kim for us for allowing you to do what you do. 👍🦌

I love these types of videos! Thank you Randy. These are how most of my hunts go. Either I don't see any game at all or the game I see are far away. But for some strange reason I keep going out season after season and come home with no game. Makes for some wonderful memories of all my outdoor experiences. Those memories are a treasure to me. 👍 I'm glad for the opportunity and that's enough for me.

I know all that extra weight from camera gear is why you have 20-30 year olds as your cameramen, but you did a good job as a solo hunter Randy. Thanks for sharing your own your own adventure with us. I think that if I was to go hunting in Montana I would get the Big Game Combo which is a much better value than the two single combos, especially just in case something like that buck coming out happens while elk hunting. As you have mentioned before hunting borders can be a gamble that can payoff and sometimes it doesn’t.

Hey Randy, I thoroughly enjoy all your videos. I have come to enjoy the entire group, Marcus, Michael, Beau,Lucas, Uncle Larry, Bart, Mathew, yourself and many others . When it come to four wheeling skills however, you seriously need to get some skills and a more appropriate rig. I have seen a number of times where you had major issues with the terrain and it would have only taken a little bit of planning with your rig. Don't throw tons of money into a rig that's designed for the Baja and take it into the snowy or muddy mountains. Maybe its just me but I have always felt that our time spent hunting is precious and the last thing I want holding me back is a failure of my equipment including my rig that I depend on to get me there. That's just my 10 cents worth. I look forward to many more videos and I hope this doesn't come across a total negative. I really do appreciate and enjoy the reflections you have on your hunts. It is very refreshing and puts into words what I am sure many of us fellow hunters feel each day we get to enjoy the outdoors. Thanks again, Michael

You do know the bigger bucks and bulls have OnX as well right? Lol. Seems to always be that way right, they know where the private boundaries are. I’ve watched bucks and bulls that I swear they know exactly where the boundary is. I’ve had bulls coming right toward me and as soon they got to the private boundary, they full on and stopped and started feeding down the boundary line. Most people on here probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

Elk seem to have calendars and maps built in. Been there on the day after season driving to work to see elk feeding near the freeway. Private ground is something I stay a long ways away from. My son has apps on his phone showing boundaries. He shows me ways in and out to public land and I won't take the chance. I know a couple guys that had the wounded elk cross the fence with a landowner refusing any access. Some of my favorite spots are now locked up by folks that now have their own piece of Montana heaven.

From a legal stand point, if you shoot an elk that's just barely on public and it dies on private, can you just walk over and recover it? Is there laws that protect hunters to do that? Or do you need land owner permission to recover it? Thanks

Randy, if you shoot game on public and he's either wounded or dies on private... you can almost always pursue or recover your animal if he goes on private. A lot of times if you contact the land owner he/she will allow you to access on their private to retrieve your animal. If not, you can always contact local game warden and they have jurisdiction to permit you to enter private and get your animal. Just saying... your scenario has occurred many times over and there are legal avenues available.
@ToddLindsay630
@ToddLindsay630 2 жыл бұрын
Brian, FYI, this is not true in Montana. There is no way you can legally make a landowner grant access, not even with a warden. You may want to look into this before you hunt in Montana, or you could be in for a surprising eye opening. Kudos to Randy for knowing the laws and respecting the landowners and not taking an unnecessary chance.
