It could be set in 1976 or 2006 or somewhere in between and always make sense. You can't tell the year it's set in and you are not supposed to, because it's not relevant.

Not even 2000 or 1999 because Internet was too slow to watch videos online at that time. Speaking of outdated computers in the library and tevevision sets in the boys dorm. The game starts in 2005, and ends in 2006.My reasons for thinking are these. The dates that you mentioned, the newspaper in the Yum Yum Market had 2005 on it, it would make sense for a newspaper to have the correct date on it, a newspaper is usually the next best thing to having a calendar on the wall. And then the paper with the car model year 2007 on it, the key words here are "Car Model Year", car manufacturers like to put their "Model Year" a head of the actual year presumably for advertisement reasons, so say you have a car with the model year 2007, that car would actually be available to purchase in 2006 due to the year being the model year, if that makes any sense. Plus the game came out in 2006, and usually unless there is a specific year mentioned, it can be assumed that the game is based in the era it came out it. And with the 1997 thing, my theory is that the reason the year 1997 appears so much, is because Grand Theft Auto came out in 1997, and it could just be an Easter Egg by Rockstar, we all know how Rockstar loves their Easter Eggs, we love them too. Then there are other things that my fellow KZbin commenters have also stated, like how a character states that "Tattoos are so 1990's", or how Mr. Galloway talks about watching videos on the internet. Again, all this is just grasping at straws, but like you said, when it comes to this stuff, you have to grasp at as many straws as you can, so think whatever year you like, I've stated my opinion, and provided evidence to support it, and you can too.

i think it takes place in 2006 because: A: Jimmy's birthday is 1991, and Jimmy is 15 ingame B: There is a digital color camera C: The monitor in the comic shop looks like a 2005ish monitor D: Galloway talks about the internet, which wasn't instituted as widely until the mid 90s E: And when Gary introduces Jimmy to the cliques in one of the first missions, Jimmy refers to the greasers as a "throwback" I.E their style is a throwback to a fashion style only popular a long time ago. However, I think Bullworth and Bullworth academy are deliberately kept timeless by Rockstar's design choices and pinning down one exact year is contrary to what they wanted for the game. The idea was to mix the best and most recognizable facets of school life from all eras, and make a big jumble of American high school culture ranging from the 60's to the early 2000's. Bully is deliberately made to be a stereotypical and unrealistic representation of a shithole school from pretty much ANY year and I think it does that very well.

The game never mentions Jimmy's birthdate and neither has Rockstar. the Wiki put it there because he was 15 at the time of the game, and the game released in 2006. He could have been born in any date. Digital Color Cameras have also existed in the 90's, maybe more primitive, but they existed. And just due to mentions of those years I think it for sure takes place between 1997-2007. I personally believe it takes place somewhere between 1997-2000. Also, lack of cellphones. It's not like Rockstar haven't implemented them into their games before but if Bully took place in 2006 they could work better than they would in previous games. So that's why I believe 1997-2000 is more reasonable, but eh, that's just me.

I'm late but as long as the car isn't from the future, that's not necessarily a deciding factor one way or the other. You could have cars from the 40's if you wished since history just doesn't cease to exist when a new year comes. Most cars in game are around the 80's which were still fairly common for 20 years. Think of it. A 1998/2001 car will still look relatively new and common to you now but that's pushing 20 years old. Also, this is a relatively poor and small town in New England so you wouldn't really have a lot of newer cars around. Not that cars were really an important aspect of the game anyways.

It takes place in 2006 and I believe it would also go into 2007 after Christmas was over, the way i knew Bully took place in 2006 was the multiple ingame hints and also taking into consideration that Rockstar has a history of having games take place the same year they came out in for example: GTA 3 takes place in 2001, GTA 4 takes place in 2008, GTA 5 in 2013, and GTA Online's year changes in real time as hinted by a recent DLC that says "its 2017".

I'm not sure if anyone has ever played River City Ransom, but that's a game from 1989 about a high school where you go around a semi-open world bearing up other college students (sound familiar?) Anyway, that game was made in 1989, with the game being set in the '50s or '60s, but referring to it as 19XX. The sequel (made in 2016) is mostly set in the 80s and the 90s, with a couple of references to the 2000s. The game however refer to this year as 19XX as well. This game exists in it's own Universe, cannabalizing bits of the seventies, eighties and nineties for it's own time period.

I was in the fourth grade in 2006. Our elementary school was right next to the middle school, and directly across the street from the high school (this led to bigger kids bullying smaller kids, but that's a story for another time) and our technology wasn't great, and many of the computers, and even books were completely outdated.

I believe Bully takes place from around the '90’s to the early or mid 2000’s. I think that’s the timeline because one time I was on the football field and I heard Bo Jackson say “My old man says I’m the best QB he’s seen since 86!” Bo is saying that his father thinks he is the best Quarter Back that he’s seen since the year 1986, implying that Bully can’t take place in the '70’s or early '80’s. The way Bo said 86 makes it sound like it’s been quite a while since the year 1986, I think the years 1987, 1988, 1989, And 1990 are too close to 1986 to be referred to like that. So I personally think that Bully takes place either from 1991-1992, 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1994-1995, 1995-1996, 1996-1997, 1997-1998, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007. heres a potential clue. The hobo was in the korean war. In order to be a korean vet in 2006 you need to be 71 or older (the war ended in 1953 and 1953-18= 1935. According to sheldon, Mr. Hattrick was in the war too as a sniper. Now while the Hobo looks to be 71+ Hattrick looks nowhere near it. So it could be either A) sheldon made up this rumor or B) Hattrick really served in Korea but this takes place before 2006. Let's assume B is true. Hattrick looks to be in his late 50's or maybe even 60. Assuming he was born in '34 or '35 (the latest possible dates) he would turn 60 in 1994 or 1995. Which if B is true means Bully would take place at the latest around 1995. Of course sheldon could be lying to get attention but if he is true this would be a huge clue.

There were a lot of backwater towns in 2000s, which had the old tech from 70s or 80s in everyday use. As a matter of fact, my home town was like this.

the game takes place the year it came out. I looked up when the very first time it was released, which was October 17, 2006. Just because you dont see much tech around doesnt mean its not there. The school and town is not caught up with tech yet so its behind a few eras. Hence why you see old looking cars and tech.

I think Bully doesn't take place in the modern era - it takes place, most likely, in the 1980s, early 1990s at the latest. There are a few scattered references to modern things, but the vibe of the game is 90% old and 10% current. The modern computers in the Dragon's Wing basement could be satire for the nerds being so into technology that they would have things "ahead of their time", because they don't make any appearances in the game. The "digital camera" could just be a color film camera; after all, Jimmy starts with a B/W camera, and even the "digital" camera can only hold 24 photos IIRC. There are NO cell phones in the game. While cell phones didn't take off until about 2000 or so, a total lack of them would indicate pre 1995. Also, there are no computers in the Harrington House, no computer class on campus, etc. The "internet" is a continuity goof. On the other hand, Come Hither would seem to sell, erm, salacious video tapes. '80s. Arcade machines. If it was 2006, would there be that many arcade machines around? The styles of gameplay also call back to the 1980s. There are no fighter games, which were very common in the 1990s. The game play is pretty simple. Even Street Racer 3D has similar gameplay to Pole Position. That's from 1982. The cars. GTA never had a problem modeling period correct cars, so why Bully? The newest cars in the game are in the boxy early 1980s style. There's nothing aerodynamic. So if the game took place in 2006, the newest cars would be 20 years old. Surely the people of Old Bullworth Vale like their new luxury cars. In shop class the car being worked on is '60s. I could go on... April 10, 2018 10:15 pm

my guess is probably 2005 since the game was originally gonna come out in October 2005 instead of 2006. not to mention that having a digital camera with a colored display and Mr. Galloway's mention of the internet automatically debunks the theory that it takes place in the 70s or 80s.

It took place in 2006-2007 because if rockstar makes a game that’s supposed to be set in a certain time period it would tell you but if not then the game is in the year it actually came out,the fashion, weapons and arcade games threw me off I thought they were in the 80s or early 90s but it could be that everything in the school and some parts of the town are out dated and that the people were far behind the mid 00s culture

I am for 1997-8. News papers and papers snippets are just tiny blurry textures that bear rather little weight. It could be just a picture of real note. Everything else points at late 90s 1997-1999.

Bully is an experience that brings people back to their childhood and makes it a bit more mischievous. So it only would make sense if Rockstar made the year unknown and open to interpretation since loads of people grew up in different time periods at school.

At 5:55 the last part of the flyer says This May Also if the Endless Summer Purgatory theory was true, the references to random points in time would make sense. Like Jimmy died in car wreck on the way to be dropped off at Bullworth, and now he's forever stuck in a time void with the spirits of various past students of the academic in a landlocked town that has no exits via land or sea, yet features has seemingly useless train tracks with dead ends and a lighthouse. While in early development, Jimmy had been scripted to die if he lost either of the last 2 boss fights but he would still respawn to start the mission over. The fact that he could've died before the the big plot hole filled ending tells me he's been dead the whole time. Almost gives a Shining vibe, like "You've always been here"

Bully always felt like a lot of it was inspired by 80s teen comedies to me. I always figured it was originally supposed to be set in the early 00s, then they decided to time warp it back, but keep some present day elements intact for ambiguity. The visuals as a whole absolutely scream 1986, with a few breakers, like the flat screen computer, but that's just my opinion.

It would make perfect sense that Bully would take place in 2006 because of the poster about the cars. In the year 2006, 2007 models of cars would be new, so it would make sense that they could be prohibited for one reason or another. That paired with the release year of the game being 2006, Rockstar's tendency to release "present day" games like GTA, and the newspaper date which has a 200 and then an unknown digit would make me believe it's in 2006.

In my opinion, I think Rockstar made it ambiguous on purpose. Open to the players interpretation, or even to no interpretation at all. When I played, I never even considered a time period. Like yeah we all obviously know 2006, the year it came out, which could be the year it's set in as well...but having it be so murky makes it more interesting. I mean I wouldn't be mad if they came out and gave us all an answer...but having set in no specific year makes it seem timeless, in a way
