I've never had a more capable, tough, intelligent dog than a Kelpie. Mine would stare at me til he figured out what I wanted done, then do that for me...all day long. He was strictly business with me, but would cuddle with my daughter at night. Wonderful breed.

I read a great story on reddit once about herding dogs. A family with a border collie had a party, and when the guests looked up at one point they noticed they were all clustered in one corner of the room. And the dog was sitting in the middle of the room looking pleased with itself. Clearly the dog used eye on the guests without the guests noticing.

Gday from Australia. My old boy passed away last year. Whilst not trained for cattle or sheep, they make excellent companions and are extremely intelligent and sensitive. But, not a town dog. Jasper used to come with me everywhere on the farm and actually learnt to keep birds out of out crops. A small day for him was 20-30kms in the paddocks and behind the tractor. A big day was 70-80kms. But not even that would wear him out.

Kelpies make wonderful pets. Yes, they'd all rather be out herding stock, but not all of them can. Ours is tiny, only 16kg, her growth stunted by getting pregnant too early, so the farm she was born on gave her away. She's got "the eye" so bad, when we go for a walk, all she does is lock eyes on me, waiting for me to shout "go!" so she runs off up the track at high speed (we clocked her at 40km/h) before coming back toward me with her eyes locked on in that classic Kelpie pose. It's like living with a slightly autistic athlete, a deeply loving one. She lies between me and the wife when we're watching TV in bed. We cuddle so much, my wife calls her my girlfriend. One of the local dog-walkers has a red Kelpie that likes to circle around ours when she's in her locked-on pose. Her name is Mathilda - "Tilly".

I lucked out and inherited a Kelpie. He is a great dog and watches over my flock of chickens. He regularly protects the flock from hawks and owls. I even caught him licking one of my chickens wounds from being pecked until she fully healed. The chickens love him. He is my favorite dog! He's smart and fun.

Have 2 male Australian Kelpies in my home. They are growing in popularity as sheep dogs in Scotland and are extremely popular in Wales. Very intelligent dogs, don't need much training, they pick up commands and cues really quickly. I can't imagine having any other breed as my Kelpies are as intelligent as say a 4 year old child. They understand full sentences, very independant and are excellent with children. As with most comments here, they are working dogs and need lots of exercise, the energy levels of a Kelpie are endless. We have other Kelpies working with sheep on the farm and the males will pull down a sheep or cattle if they have to. They have great balance and work well on and off the quad bike. All in all, they make excellent companions and working dogs.

I got a Kelpie from a foster home. He is about 9 months old. Mac learns everything very quickly - amazing. This guy loves to run before, during and after his morning 3 mile walk. He will run in the yard subsequent to the walk - lots of energy. The dog does not like scolding of any kind so, I recommend keeping an even keel during training. And repitition can be rejected if not new material. I am not disappointed at all. Stay in control and it'll be alright.

My red girl was brought up on sheep and could load a stock truck by herself. Moved on to cattle aged 5 and worked brilliantly once she learned her distance and how to push cattle. Excellent eye, she could pin a mob of 400 sheep for as long as you want.

annagitana1 I have an almost 3 yr old Kelpie. He is my second search and rescue dog, and works as a Trailing dog. He was injured last year, so I couldn’t work him as much. However, I would hide his favorite toy for him in the house, which helps keep his brain active and him calmer. They are great working dogs and high drive. What makes them so smart, and hard working also makes them harder to live with. You can help your Kelpie by playing scent games or hide and seek games at home. You can find ideas for different types of games and activities to do with your Kelpie on Facebook, etc.

"Bite in the face." This is exactly how my kelpie ended up with a rescue group. He was living with a family that had kids and he would nip/bite at them in the face. I've had him for six years now in a kid-free home and he has been wonderful. I do have to keep an eye on him when kids are around especially if they are rambunctious and excitable. As long as everyone is calm he doesn't feel the need to make them calm down by biting at them. We lived in an apartment for a while and as long as he got a daily walk he was great indoors the rest of the day. But he clearly is not as driven as these working line dogs. Thank you for highlighting these great dogs!

So unfortunate the research wasn't done by his previous family to know that would be an issue. Any working dog that doesn't have a 'job' will take to working and herding its family out of instinct and a need for an outlet. I'm glad you found him ❤️

The Australian Kelpie is an eye dog that wasn't trained to bite or nip. Most people can get their dogs to work cattle without biting. Never had biting issues with ours. I've never seen a Kelpie in Australia bite an animal- cow or sheep. But ours does "herd" in her own way. If we are together and one person leaves than she tries to bring us back- emotional manipulation is her best strategy. If you have one as a pet though be prepared for a lot of cleaning. As they are outdoor dogs, they have a double coat to help with the weather- that sheds frequently

Beautiful strong woman. Lovely video of a purpose bred working dog that is invaluable. Cold climate sheep i'd probably choose have at least one border collie, but warm to hot/arid climates like ours though the kelpie reigns supreme. I had one that made me laugh when she would quickly jump in a water trough on extra hot days and just sit in it with her paws out over the edge watching the stock for maybe 5-10 seconds, before getting straight back to work. She paced herself during the tough days. They just go and go. Adore them.

He told me just after he brought the Kelpie home, as a 10 week old pup, it was trying to herd ants! it was a very very smart dog. TheAlmightyClipse sure why not. Well Australia is actually mostly cattle not sheep. The Kelpie is bred for both. The Kelpie when bred correct they should be confident and stubborn. They should be mostly heading and low tail end force. They should be able to walk up to the nose of your stock and bite it, contradictory to what she believes. She also shouldn’t be getting many not wanting to work if she’s breeding right. If your kelpie doesn’t fight you on how to do things for the first 2 years it’s not bred well. We send our dogs off where we can’t see them for a long time and we can’t have a dog that can’t do the job itself without commands. If you want a biddable dog but a border collie

If you are talking about Queensland Heelers you are wrong! The Kelpie came out of the English wire haired terrier. The Queensland Heeler, acd is NOT the breeds name, came out of 2 dogs, one called Hall's Heeler, the other Timmins Biter. Kelpies are in no way designed for cattle, Heelers were bred to have a much stronger bite, and have a more stubborn attitude.

I have one of those "non herding" Australian Kelpies that Lori said might make a good pet. He does BUT he requires special understanding. He still needs the right kind of mental stimulation, he still has the hard wired motor patterns of these dogs with "eye." He's a strange mix of sensitive and resilient. He will NOT forget a bad experience at times. You really have to understand these are not "pets" as in the common doodle or retriever, or even a pet bred GSD. They are sweet and amazing, but very particular at times. THey live for activities with you and you have to provide that for them to be happy. There ARE kelpies that are "show line" kelpies, bred as dog show stock in Australia for decades. Interestingly enough it's harder to find these in the USA than the original working lines, but if you want a kelpie companion, these are better suited in general and can also perform in agility and many other casual dog sports. I hope people try to import more of these and create the demand for them, leaving most of the working dogs alone. There will always be individuals in working dog litters that are more suitable as active companions and sports dogs, but a more popular "demand" for working cattle and sheepdogs among the widespread public is not desirable. Lori did a great job, but I do wish she had not brushed over certain health concerns such as Cerebellar Abiotrophy. It's believed to be an autosomal recessive and that it mostly shows in pups early on, so I think a lot of breeders give it little thought, but in truth there are some late onset forms, and some kelpies get other forms of Ataxia. I don't know the percentage of HD in the breed but it does exist, and there is some Progressive Retinal Atrophy in the breed. Again, I don't know the percentage but it's there.

In Australia heaps of people have kelpies as pets. I've not heard of an Australian kelpie nipping at kids, but in Australia they have always been bred primarily for sheep. They are however high drive pets who enjoy either being with the owner most of the time or frequent long walks and mental stimulation like obedience, agility and games in general. Also the genetic studies have shown there is dingo in the breed.

People do keep cattle in Australia. I've spoken to a few people who use them for cattle there but yup, mostly sheep. I also think not every Australian even thinks they need more bite just because of cattle. Someone, I forget who, wrote a wonderful article asking whether or not more aggression was better, even for cattle. Some say cattle ignore "eye." I really don't know. Also there are so many different breeds and hybrids of cattle, it could depend on what you raise. I see a lot of ads for "bark and bite", and it's not just in the USA. Don't know what else to say. I dream of going to the Casterton festival in June so I can speak to many breeders and ranchers at once and see what's up.

Personally I've used them for cattle sheep and goats, but the dogs I've used have always had to work best with sheep, they rarely bite anything. They do hold goats but that's because we catch feral goats (aka they are properly wild). It's really depends who's bred them for what purpose and how they use them.

I have a kelpie cross lab and she does not bite she is very gentle and will only lick, this might be because she is half lab but she has a lot of kelpie traits. She is very energetic so we take her for a walk/run everyday plus she looks like a kelpie. We love her to bits she is gorgeous.

Because they are used for jumping over sheep, even walking on the backs of sheep, they have great balance. You can see these dogs on skateboards and surfboards it's amazing

If you want a cattle dog get a blue heeler. Farmers in Australia that farm sheep and cattle usually have a kelpie and a heeler

not always. they have their preferences. my mate has sheep and cattle and uses kelpies almost exclusively. he did have a border collie at 1 stage. so some pups are a mix 😊

My Kellie is pet. She doesn't work, she is very active and is a wonderful pet and companion. She's very affectionate and very intelligent. She doesn't need to work and she's my second Kellie so I know what they want. The first lived to 17 so she's right on health and life expectancy. You must keep her active , we go to the park with a ball twice a day. I talk to her like she is human. She understands a great deal, sometimes complex phrases. Mine is smaller than most, 17 kilo,s , no idea pounds. She can jump my height without much effort!.

I have a kelpie x Greyhound but mine made a great pet. He was bred for pig hunting but when he's not hunting (which is about 8 months out of the year) he's a house dog. tHey are very smart, it was easy to train him as a pet AND a pig hunter. He can jump incredibly high, run for miles & yes, when we are at sport trainings and he's there he'll try round up the team everytime 😂

Kelpies can make great city pets, but if you don't find something for them to do they will find something to do and you might not like the results...😁 Making them a part of the family and including them in almost everything you do and good daily walks with plenty of time in an off-lead area is normally more than enough to keep your Kelpie happy and contented...❤️

I rescued a pup that was labeled as a heeler mix due to one of her sisters resembling a Queensland heeler. But she has the body and coat of the kelpie a red and tan! With white socks and tan speckles from the heeler!

I have a kelpie that was given to me by a friend. She was probably 6 weeks old and she looked like a little bear. Her paws were huge and her body was like 7 inches long with little 3 inch legs. Shes all black with white scarf under her chin. I thought she was gonna stay small but she kept eating like a horse. Even my 80 pound blue heeler was taking notice of this little tasmanian devil. Thats what she was. She was like a little devil. She would attack my feet and my uncles Chihuahua. And the more she grew is when i realized i had a kelpie.
