The Border Collie is a working and herding dog breed developed in the Anglo-Scottish border region for herding livestock, especially sheep. It was specifically bred for intelligence and obedience.
Robin Penland- Elliot is a world class trainer of Border Collies and the owner of On The Lamb Herding located in Camarillo, Ca. Robins is an excellent trainer of dogs but more impressively and excellent instructor for humans. Robin's relationship with the breed goes back nearly thirty years and her love and passion as spawned an enriching career. Her love and understanding of the Border Collie is second to none.
Considered highly intelligent, extremely energetic, acrobatic and athletic, they frequently compete with great success in sheepdog trials and dog sports. They are often cited as the most intelligent of all domestic dogs.Border Collies continue to be employed in their traditional work of herding livestock throughout the world. They are the premiere herder of any livestock but were developed primarily on sheep.
The Border Collie is also considered by most experts to be the most intelligent dog.

I remember going to a BBQ on a friend's farm a few years ago. I noticed everyone seemed to be crowding in one spot. One of the farm's border collies was in fact herding all the guests together.

Because they are herding dogs they have a nack to round up certain things including people and other dogs the herding instinct is very very strong and it's difficult to get them to not do it that's why they are best suited to living on a farm these drop dead gorgeous pups are not suitable for apartments or the busy city they'll get very freaked out by the loud noise of passing cars busses and any kind of traffic also they are very very very energetic and extremely intelligent so new owners beware if you don't want a dog that requires very long walks and the ability to outsmart you and to constantly be on the move then this beautiful dog isn't for you ❤

You have to understand its not work to them. Their just doing what their instinct is telling them. If you dont let these dogs be active both physically and mentally they become board when they become board they become frustrated, and when they become frustrated they become destructive, and then you have an unruly and a problematic dog on your hands

Australian cattle dogs, bred from the border collie originally, will work so hard they will literally kill themselves. In extreme heat the cattle man has to take care care that they get enough water and rest in the shade Sort of horrifying and wonderful at the same time.

Sled dogs like huskies will do the same thing. They love and live for pulling sleds and it irritates me when people say it’s cruel for them to run and pull a heavy sled. It’s actually cruel to not let them pull sleds because they enjoy it

Owning em is insane!!! They are addicted to rules as in law and order!!! They will never ever break a rule they understand!!! If I leave any food on my bed neither of my border collies would touch it. She doesn’t go to the bathroom anywhere near a trail or walkway. They practically potty train themselves!!! My dog breed for life hands down that’s it!!!

Took my Border Collie to a country property once, he had never seen sheep before. He saw a flock in the distance ~100m away , immediately rushed to them and rounded them up, I was amazed. RIP CB, good dog.

We had a farm and rescued a border collie/lassie pup and she pretty much taught herself to round the sheep up,, she was never trained but came in handy most times for basic herding. She’s retired now and at 14 is still going strong apart from a little arthritis, smartest dog we’ve had.

Our border has no shepherd training, but will naturally herd our neighbor's 5 yorkies, and keep them right at our neighbor's feet. And when we take the family into the Montana wilderness, our BC keeps a close eye on my young boys, making sure they don't wander too far away from us.

I will forever love this breed. I had an amazing best friend, coworker, service dog and all around partner for 15.6 years in my boy Dash. He passed away on St Patrick's day this year and I am so lost without him. I never thought I'd love "a crazy ass border collie" but Dash was an exemplary diplomat for his breed and all dogs. I miss him horribly. He was a dark red with the most penetrating yellow eyes. Be was born with natural skill. He always had the AUDACITY to be embarassed if I had to show him how to do anything. We used to joke that somehow an Englishman and bordercollie crossed paths and got stuck in the wrong bodies 😂 he was the most SERIOUS pup I have ever met. In his final year and a half, he was a benjiman button in that his dementia made him regress into a naughty puppy which was actually a joy as much as it was frustrating with the new challenge. He was such a dedicated friend and I am lost withouth his yellow gaze meeting mine asking what are we doing now mom with nothing but his sweet unconditional love. Border collies are phenomenal phenomenal dogs❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm so so so sorry... My Birdy is my best friend, my family.. I've taken her everywhere I've gone for 13 years,& she's starting to have mobility issues& it's killing me. I'm terrified of living one day without her& I know it's going to come.i carry her up the stairs& in& out of the car everyday.. I'm just thankful I can still have it my way for now. I will be lost& empty& there just aren't words for what I'll be without my best friend, my co pilot, my partner in life. Everyone knows& loves her.. every time we get to a barn everyone says hi to her first... I'm just the one that drives her there lol I couldn't pay her to leave my side, she always wants to be with me just as much as I want to be by her side. I couldn't love anything more& I don't know how you're doing it but I ache for you, I know the loss even though I haven't lost her yet, I can feel the emptiness that will consume me& I don't know how to escape it but I'd do anything to never have to live for even a moment without her. I'm just so sorry my friend.. I know on top of it it's lonely to have no one understand the bond, just how deeply you love your Dash, I dare them to say those words "just a dog".. how sad for them they'll never understand your loss, at the same time I almost envy people who don't get it, bc they'll never have the ability to connect this way& have to feel the separation from their other half when it comes. I understand.. I just wish I could do something.. but I'm well aware there is no thing that could be done or said to fill the hole in your heart.. just know I'm thinking of you & my heart's breaking for you.. Until then find comfort that he, on the other hand, is just fine, bc you know he never left your side.. just not in a physical form right now that can ease your pain. My BC died 11/27/2023… RIP Lacey!!!! She had life long health problems but lived 12.5 years when she wasn’t gonna last 1. She made friends with everyone she met. I’m fortunate cuz my sister gifted me another BC puppy when Lacey had 11 months left. I at first resented having a puppy at the same time I was keeping Lacey comfortable as she slowly dies. Then after Lacey died Margo is all I have to hold onto. It’s 2 year old post. I hope you have a new BC. There’s plenty of good ones out there!!!

Faithful, intelligent and so loyal. Our Lucy was the best. Literally could learn a new trick in minutes. She had doggy dementia in later life and we had to do the kindest thing and let her go, three weeks ago. The grief is so real. My constant companion for 15 years. Adopted via RSPCA and a joy from day own. ❤

That is an extremely important skill for anyone who wants to explain something well - each topic should progress into the next topic, kind of like how a storyline is much more interesting if each scene leads to some other scene. This is probably why one common tip for explaining things well is to "treat it like a story".

If you dont want to use a breeder, you can always find a Border Collie rescue :) I rescued mine when she was two. She came fully trained. It just took me some time to train myself to catch up to her level. Her temperament was the best. She was the love of my life.

I recently got a border collie. I’ve always heard a dog is only as smart as it’s owner. This dog is much smarter than me. This animal learned quickly how to work me. Once I figured out what she was doing, I was able to break the behaviors. She’s wonderful! I wouldn’t trade her for the world and spend my time trying to find ways to engage her.

Our family got a young female border collie from a local farm in Scotland. The farmer sold her to us because she didn't have the correct temperament to work with sheep. She was very exciteable, energetic, and couldn't remain still, although she was always a friendly dog. After a couple of years she finally started to calm down, and the change in her temperament allowed her to become very obedient and to learn loads of tricks. From being a difficult dog she became a wonderful, very clever and much loved pet, and lived with us for almost 15 years. I still miss her.

Mine lived 18 years. Never stopped. She was running when she fell over and died. She was very beautiful. Very smart. I had 2 but one was stolen because they were great cattle dogs. Sadie would sit under a tree while lassie rounded the cattle up. Then Lassie would go sit under the tree as Sadie rushed them into the barn etc. Everyone would come out to watch them. Someone was trying to steal both but Lassie wasn't a people person. Unfortunately Sadie was. Whoever got Sadie was out of luck because she only did what Lassie told her to. Lassie trained her. Broke my heart. I have 2 new now who are very good but I no longer let people come out and see or know it.

I noticed something very interesting at the 14:00 mark. The owner whistles to demonstrate the sound, and the border collie is about to follow her commands when she grabs him gently to let him know this is a demonstration. However, when she continues with different whistles, he remains calm and sits there, only looking to the side to make sure it isn't the real thing. It really shows intelligence of these dogs. He knew after the first time that she was using the whistle for something else (to inform).

Many years ago a friend and I were walking in South Wales, across a field (a right-of-way) and a young collie being trained at the other side of the field ran off from his handful of sheep and trainer and ran round and round us, trying to 'herd' us over to join his flock. She might know about Border Collies BUT... as for "The Worlds Smartest Dog"? She obviously isn't educated on the lesser known but MUCH more admired Welsh Sheepdog! The Welsh Sheepdog doesn't need direction... like the Border Collie. Just show the Welsh Sheepdog the trailer / pen / gate and then send it off. The Welsh Sheepdog innately gets it and WILL herd expertly without a bunch of whistles, chirps or signals... like Border Collies. The Welsh Sheepdog is a tad larger, studier dog that'll last longer in the field. It doesn't crouch down every few feet like the Border Collie... the Welsh Sheepdog stays up on it's feet, ready to herd anything commanded to. The Border Collie has "strong eye" vision that focuses only on the animals being herded... and yes, stares them down. The Welsh Sheepdog is "loose eyed" meaning it has a far SUPERIOR wider field of vision. There's a video (documentary on here called My Sheepdog and Me" TVO Docs) that WILL show how these incredible dogs CAN herd lost wandering sheep in a.... forest! Their wider vision allows them to herd without them hitting every second tree lol... like the Border Collie would! The Welsh Sheepdog is also superior in mountainous terrains. Part mountain goat? In closing, I suggest you, anyone reading this post and hopefully, the woman hosting this video that there IS a dog just as, if not more adaptable intellectually, than the well known Border Collie. Behold! THE Welsh Sheepdog! You WILL be amazed. Watch it and see.

Haha she's like "We don't really have that many commands we use with the dogs", & then she lists the 1800 commands the dogs need to know in 12 different languages plus in whistle language, & then in writing just in case she tells them by email. You nailed it on the head about the fact that collies aren't worried about leaving you to go a half mile away to herd, whereas an Aussie would be. I herd with Aussies and while they are great running sheep in and out of pens and some grazing, they can't go fetch stragglers as effectively over long distances.

We inherited Henry about 12 months ago as a 7 year old. He had been kept in suburbia in a backyard so I took it easy with him and extended his walks. I decided he was ready to go jogging so I took him out. First two times I was worried that his early inactivity was permanent, then his breeding came on strong and now he is doing it easy. Speaking of strong eyed dogs, he lets me know when he is ready to go just by sending me thought messages through his eyes. He is easy to train, perhaps he thinks I am easy to train, but it was a win/win for him and me when I got him. He is a bloody beauty.

We had a sibling with a farm and a border collie. Though not formally trained, the herding instinct is so strong in that breed that when we would go to visit, we'd get out of the car and all of us, adults and children, would be herded up to the front door, the collie gently nipping at our ankles. To learn about these beautiful dogs, but mainly to show them an awesome example of a woman to be admired. Intelligent, compassionate, hard-working. We take our Border Collie to the dog park twice a day. She doesn't play with the other dogs, just wan't to fetch ball. However, as soon as a few dogs start running in packs, she chases them (she is faster than most breeds) and starts herding them until they calm down.

Bless you and all the border collies! You have made the best video that covers everything from soup to nuts about this breed and done it in such an interesting and engaging manner. We had a bc cross that finally got her hearts desire at age 10…… her introduction to sheep herding! She went for her test, her aptitude test I guess? , was invited to stay till the tests were over for the day, and began her lessons that day. The trainer ( like every trainer in every discipline we introduced to this dog), was impressed with her from the moment she stepped into the ring. And like the other trainers ( agility, obedience, etc), she saw a dog who accelerated quickly at any task put before her, and a dog who absolutely loved to work. When we were out and about, people would comment how she never took her eyes off of me( or my daughter, her favorite “ people”). “ She’s waiting for me to tell her to do something.” I’d explain. She just loved to do anything for her people, her mission in life seems to be making us happy! She has been the brightest, most obedient, most thoughtful and loving dog I have ever known in over 60 years, and I’ve had dogs in my life since I was born. Her breed makeup was a border collie mom and the sire was border collie X Australian shepherd, so that herding instinct was strong. They were born on a large working cattle ranch. I wish we had been able to find shepherding classes way sooner than we did, as we lost her 6 months ago to cancer, she was only not quite 12, and still acted like a puppy up to the day she collapsed. I dream of another like her, but have that fear I’d constantly be comparing dogs. My life has certainly been enriched by her, and it’s sure empty around here now!

This is spot on. I believe this is a mix of Smart and Instinct. They are Fascinating and also Life Savors. I grew up in North Dakota and Montana and were around a number of these amazing pups. An avalanche rescue collie saved my girlfriends life 10 miles or more outside of Bozeman MT on a cold snowy night in December some years ago. We had over 50 fire fighters and police looking for her after a Christmas party in a dress, in the dead of winter, in a snow storm. We searched for her for hours. Guess who found her a half mile away taking a nap in a snowbank? She sniffed some clothes at my house and went out on a mission. Less than a half hour later we found her. The collie's name was Latte (warm coffee drink) Perfect. She saved a life that day. Great video. Great job you do with the Border Collies. They are absolutely relentless and brilliant and need to work daily. No apartment life for these amazing creatures. They have a job to do.

Training and puzzles with help to tire them out. Smart dogs love stuff problem solving stuff and it'll help to tire them out way better than physical exercise

As a Border Collie owner and sheep herding competitor, thank you for an excellent explanation of the working breed. They truly are amazing dogs when it comes to thinking and solving problems. Most of the BC's I meet at trial competitions are as you described, sociable, friendly and live to work and please the owner. Don't know what I'd do without mine...well, yeah, I do, I'd be chasing my sheep all over in frustration but instead, I just say "bring them, Mindy" or "put um up" and she does all the work in 2 min. with a smile on her face. ha

I run/walk my dogs at least twice a day. I take a good amount of time to get them under voice control and train them for their own safety! This little girl is such a joy! Smart as a whip! She pees when I say go pee! Thank you so much for your wisdom and insight into this amazing breed! Her Name is Nellie and I adopted her from a shelter. Hard to imagine why anyone would have let her go!

Great commentary on Border Collies! Over the years I have had two, both extraordinary dogs! The first one was years ago when I operated a cattle ranch in WY! Her name was Buttons! Although I am no dog trainer, she became a top cattle dog. She figured out on her own what needed to be done. On one occasion she, I and my good cow horse corralled 280 of cattle all on our own, no fuss, no muss! I have often thought I would rather work cattle with that combination than with a half dozen cowboys trying to out cowboy each other.

Patricia Orsborn I truly love all the herding breeds. This dogumentary was about Border Collies. However, after 3 decades working with dozens of breeds. Yes, I am biased to prefer Border Collies for distance work. I have an Australian Cattle Dog to help move lambs to & from pastures. She's very good at teaching lambs to move.

Yes, in that video it said border collies were not good for first time owners, but in fact, they are exceptional for first time owners who are very active and run around often. They are so intelligent and really keep you on your toes, while still being that dog that most people will love and is great at agility and things like that when trained properly!
