In evaluating how Christopher Moltisanti could have become, and would have been as, boss we will look at the obstacles he would face, his potential allies and threats, the windows of opportunity he would have had and, ultimately, how he would've been as boss. A hypothetical Sopranos episode.

The old-timers in the family and especially old style soldiers and captains would have never accepted Christopher as a new boss. The main problem to all of this was that Chris wasn't enough of an earner and besides getting into movies, didn't have a lot of new ideas or political connections. Chris had emotional problems and wouldn't be able to keep his cool in situations which require patience and thinking. Johnny Sack and Tony also were loose cannons and really lacked the ability to THINK before doing something, or to separate business from personal life. The only people who were boss material for the NJ outfit were Silvio, Patsy or Ralph. Silvio is obvious; he is calm natured, level-headed and rarely acts impulsively; except for the one time he iced Big Dom with Carlo in the social club. Patsy on the other hand has shown great patience, cunning and respect for the overall workings of the hierarchy. He really kept his cool with Christopher and honestly didn't do any irrational stuff when he was passed over for the Capo position.. that guy is pure mob material and therefore an excellent candidate. Same with Ralph, because despite being a sadistic idiot he still makes very good decisions business-wise and was very creative. He wouldn't be my first choice but I think he did have the necessary characteristic traits to become an efficient leader of the outfit.
@ned5231
@ned5231 2 жыл бұрын
I'd have to disagree about Silvio, in the episodes where he was acting boss for Tony he showed that he hated making decisions and couldn't give a firm answer to the guys below him, he didn't want the job and hated the pressure that came with it, Sil is the perfect consigliere someone who's smart and loyal and can be relied on for advice but who lacks ambition, Patsy it's kinda hard to tell he again doesn't seem to have the ambition it would take to become boss but he's on screen less than alot of Tony's crew so maybe we just didn't see that side of him when he was around Tony he seems well liked enough and was very patient which are good qualities, Ralph is a good earner but he seems to rub alot of people the wrong way, if I were a betting man I'd put money on Paulie, he's a decent earner but more importantly he's both liked and feared by other mobsters, he respects traditions and has ambition even though he hides it well, I also think he would have been the New York families preferred candidate, someone who'll keep the rest of the new jersey guys in line while also being subservient to the 5 families wishes, it would also be pretty easy to turn him against Tony as he already suspects Tony is considering getting rid of him and it would be easy for New York to play on those fears while also dangling the carrot of being boss in front of him to get him to turn

And his skills as an earner were hard for even the guys who hated him the most to argue with. @HidanVenom the problem with a lot of guys that actually did try coups, like Ralphie and Richie and in this scenario theoretically Christopher, is that it wouldn't work with New York. Tony had a longstanding relationship with Johnny Sack and Carmine, and remember, even NY weak as fuck at the end with years of infighting between Carmine and Johnny were still able to take out Tony like swatting a fly. Chris would do some dumb shit, Johnny wouldn't like it, and Johnny would look for new management over there possibly in the form of Ralph (if Chris took over before the joke heard round the world.) Or Sil or even....God Forbid Paulie. Tony had the respect needed in NY to make shit work, Chris never could, he was too hot headed and impulsive. NJs whole thing lived on a razors edge, if they irritated NY too much it was over and that was made obvious again and again throughout the series.

The only way for Chris to have been the boss was 1. If adriana never became an informant her turning then death started the ball rolling for the end of chris' and tony's relationship 2. Chris had stayed clean but still drank recreationally meaning tony and others wouldn't be so annoyed by chris' aversion to alcohol and whatnot and I genuinely think with adriana's help this could've happened 3. Avoided being killed in Bobby's place as number 2. Pretty much, if adriana didn't work with the feds and he didn't get killed by new york, he would've been tony's number 2 by the end. Pretty much everything that corroded their relationship wouldn't have happened, hell if chris did end up making cleaver he almost certainly wouldn't have included the sleeping with the girlfriend thing as to not upset or embarrass adriana and make himself look like a cuckold for staying with her and probably wouldve made the villain less overtly a parody of tony as shed almost certainly point it out go him, so again, tonys reception to cleaver wouldn't be negative as it was in canon. Really adriana's death put a ticking time bomb on tony and chris' relationship and on chris' life as a whole. He only lived a few more years after her death and that really makes sense, she was dumb, they both were, but she did help keep him somewhat grounded, hell with her around and sil's help chris may not have been a bad boss even. Still reckless, stupid, and worryingly immature, but he may have survived longer as a boss than phil or junior did. Also as a boss with Tony still alive (doubt he could kill Tony and get away with it) it would be a situation Tony had actually planned from the start with chris being boss while tony was the one actually giving orders, old school guys, and those closer to Tony would've known and respected this, and even if they didn't want to, respected Chris. He would've acted as an essential mouthpiece/puppet and legal fall guy for tony until he later passed but by that time chris would be late 40s+ and would hopefully be more mature and capable of managing a micro-family. After all, that's clear what Tony wanted for Chris for good and bad. For him calling Jackie Jr little lord fuck pants Chris was treated similarly by Tony. In a sense, much like their Italian ancestors, Tony was the emperor, and Chris was his adopted son and heir.

Christophers only shot at making boss would be to: 1. get his act together (drugs, lack of focus, impulsive behaviour) 2. Instead of Chrissy calling Tony and having Aide get whacked, he negotiates a deal with the Feds whereby he stays where he is at, gives evidence to the FBI regarding Tony and anyone else he wants gone, and then after the Feds arrest Tony, Sil, and anyone else Chrissy gets evidence on. Really good breakdown. Very insightful observations. Also backed up by actual real life events of infamous double crosses between the New York, Jersey and Philadelphia families. Specifically, the idea of Ralf trying to take out the NJ boss (Tony) and underboss ( Sill). It happens to mirror the real life murders of Philly Boss Angelo Bruno and his underboss, by a powerful NJ captain, Tony ‘Bananas’ Capanegro. He ended up being killed by the Genovese family for not having permission. Then there’s the scenario with Chrissy getting a promotion if he had taken out Furio (if Furio had killed Tony) which, again, mirrors the events of the hit on Carmine Galante (a de facto Boss of the Bonnano family) who was killed by HIS Italian body guard Caesar Bonivante (Who was, like, Furio, hired muscle straight from Italy 🇮🇹) Caesar was killed shortly after by Bruno Indelicato (the son of a recently murdered, and powerful Bonnano captain Sonny “Red” Indelicato). Bruno (who was also a known drug addict, like Christopher) was given a promotion for killing Caesar Bonivante and brought into the fold with the upper levels of the Bonnano family. Not sure if you knew. Still, in your hypothetical scenarios, they played out eerily similar in real life. Don’t mean to be long winded but WOW. You nailed those right on the head.

This is exactly Paulies plan to take Tony's throne. He gave up Silvios location/ plans & was gave up Tony's location in the last episode. That's why he didn't argue with Tony about becoming capo because he knew Tony was going to die

The only way that Chris could have become boss is if everyone else got busted at the same time except him because the FBI thought he was a nobody like that time he didn’t get mentioned in the mob news report. My guess is that he would unsuccessfully try to move the family to Hollywood if he got the top spot

Before Christopher's having to go into rehab Tony was bringing him along to eventually take over the family. He would've needed Tony to stay alive for awhile after the show ended and eventually when Chris' time as Underboss became more fully established and guys like Silvio and Paulie getting too old to take the spot. Basically his best chance was to remain as Tony's #2 and wait out the guys who had a claim ahead of him.

Chris's addictions was the major roadblock for the captain's chair. Capo di capi. All those guys after him, Jackie Jr, Dino, Sean Gismonte, Drinkwater, Furio, Adrianna all whacked out on drugs. We all saw how his hookup with Julianna, got him hooked on smack again. It wouldn't take much for Chris to tale drugs from Matush or any one of them underlings. Chris would never have made it. As Junior said,, "A dog you love catches rabies, you put it out of its misery, right away." In the whole scheme of the Sopranos series, Junior was right.

Tony wanted Chris to take over but he Had issues he just couldn't Control. which made him Unpredictable and Unreliable to an extent. Yeah I felt Bad for Ralph I mean he was Earning with Both Hands and Tony still wasn't happy. The way Their Relationship ended was very Similar to how it Started. Tony Breached Protocol Over Tracy and He did the Same because of Pie Oh My. You don't kill one of your Top Guys over a Sex Worker and a Horse.

Biggest issue is that Chris is no schemer. Once he realized he was no longer favored by Tony, he should've buckled down and started planning against him. If Tony was in his spot, he'd have known he had to make a move. But Chris just didn't have the chops nor true ambition; he needed to secure his own connections and be able to perceive opportunities.

Without watching this, I'm coming in with the belief that he will have his attention too divided to be successful, he has no legitimacy from no true respect among capos and would be easily challenged in the long run. He's very keen into the lifestyle and wouldn't be too easily manipulated if he is sober. If not, all bets are off.

I think he would have been a good boss if you didn't have the drug problem. He's a lot like Tony with the impulsiveness. He has with Tony doesn't when he's communicating with younger people, like when he was helping the two idiots crack the safe.

His best shot would have been to kill Silvio with no connections or a lead to someone else. Also being clean when Tony calls him or actively have been in league with Tony’s attitude towards Ralphie at that point. Succession for New Jersey is guaranteed if he can whack Adriana with no suspicion to the feds or maybe they (feds) keep that leverage while the series goes a different way.

Tbh I think his best opportunity would be if he had went to Johnny Sack after the joke and told him that everyone was laughing and making fun of her. John would have gone apeshit. Plus Paulie and Patsy weren’t happy with Tony at the top at that time. Also, Ally Boy would for sure join up with Chris if he knew New York had his back. From the Richie-Ally conversation, it’s clear Ally goes wherever the wind is blowing. He wouldn’t stand against New York. And that’s the biggest fucking crew in the family. The Aprile crew wouldn’t want to piss off John. The only problem is, could making this move give Chris enough clout to be the boss? Patsy, Larry/Ally, Vito, Raymond (who was already with the FBI lol) all could make a case to be boss.

In this situation they might've gone with Chris' idea to take out Tony but no way would NY have backed this plan with it making Chris the Boss. At the time of the Ginny Sack joke Chris was just simply being made Acting Capo of Paulie's crew. At most Chris would've gotten out of this being the permanent Capo with Paulie moving up to Underboss.

I think Chris would have matured 10x if he became boss. He matured quite a but throughout the show. Drugs would still trip him up though and his rep would be ruined quickly as a boss. His crew would be paranoid about his drug usage as well.

Even if chris was sober it'd still would not be a long tenure. Please remember that he wanted to be in the spotlight - that mindset is not good even for a glorified crew's boss. Plus he is not very smart. With a smart right hand man, maybe. But I just dont see it.

As a human with needs that will never be satisfied it’s hard to say Chris would’ve been anything other than a soldier, the fact he raise I’m rank was only due to Tony’s love and favoritism towards him. Chris is by all means not a push over in the eyes of a civilian. I’m the mob life Chris had no redeeming power or qualities other than blood and loyalty. Even then tony slowly realized that Chris was acting out in ways to belittle or discredit Tony’s reputation especially with the movie release. Making tony realizes a junkie who lies and conducts himself on a level of no to little concern about the repercussions of actions. That’s why I feel Chris wouldn’t have been a good boss if he ever where to be.
