In this episode we will take a look at Ralph Cifaretto and how, despite being involved in some of the more memorable situations in the show, left a remarkably small footprint on the series.

Ralphie set up a huge chain of events, it was the start of the unravelling relationship with NY, his death gave Vito a bump, then that thing happened, which finally put Carlo as capo... Who then flipped

@bradhorowitz2765
@bradhorowitz2765 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm…good argument there….having a rat as a capo does change the game. But it’s worth asking, how MUCH does that actually impact the ending? Of course it matters depending on what you think happens. If Tony goes to jail because If testimony by Carlo…then yes ralphie indirectly helps ensure Tony’s demise. But how likely is this? Tony has gotten away with crimes that used eyewitness-it’s been good luck on his side. We aren’t even sure what exactly Carlo will say if it is Carlo. The most likely outcome is that Tony was killed by a conspiracy of paulie, the New York mob and Patsi. When looking at this outcome, rlaphie didn’t seem to play a major role. Patsi wanted Tony dead after his brother was killed, paulie realized he was never going to be sage with Tony; u could make the case that the crew by the end had lost confidence in Tony. Was any of this related to how no one believed Tony’s cover story about ralphie? Well the video makes the case not really-but u could say it certainly didn’t help Tony. After all, if Tony would kill a valuable asset over s horse, what else isn’t he capable of doing? As for the New York mob, they had bigger issues with Tony. Rlaphie s death may have caused Vito to be promoted who then had his thing which then caused Phil to go berserk-but was NY really upset about how Tony handled Vito initially? In fact, Phil’s actions seemed to make him look unreasonable to everyone else. You also could counter that Vito didn’t impact why phill’s own crew betrayed him. It was the NJ/NY war that caused them to decide to wack Phil (and Tony)

I wonder if anyone else has ever noticed all the parallels between Ralph's first and final appearances: In Ralph's first appearance, Tony is grieving the recent death of his mother. In Ralph's final appearance, it's Ralph who is grieving the recent injury to his son. In Ralph's first scene, he visits Tony in the latter's home while Tony is underdressed. In Ralph's last scene, Tony comes to visit Ralph in *his* home while Ralph is underdressed. Ralph visits Tony on an overcast summer day. Tony visits Ralph on a sunny winter day. Their first conversation is about Ralph setting fires. Their final conversation is also about Ralph setting a fire. Their first conversation is also about the subject of Ralph's possible promotion to captain. Tony's last conversation regarding Ralph likewise concerns Ralph's status as a captain--namely, him and Christopher discussing how Tony has just killed a captain without having a sit-down with the other captains first. Tony and Ralph's first conversation takes place by Tony's swimming pool. After Tony kills Ralph, he puts Ralph in his own bathtub and later buries him in a flooded quarry. What else am I missing?

He left a pretty major legacy. His Ginny joke started the discord between NY and NJ. Johnny never really viewed NJ the same way again. This was a problem because he eventually became Boss. The discord eventually became war. Ralph wasn’t the sole reason, but Ralph telling the joke and Paulie snitching to Johnnie about it got the ball rolling. Toney questioned Paulie’s role in it and almost killed him over it. Paulie was already latently disloyal and the scare with death gave him more reasons to betray him at fhe end of the show. Also Toney’s killing Ralph over the horse also caused some of the captains and crew to start questioning his leadership. There had been some questions before but they were concerned Toney wasn’t totally stable and could kill them over a trivial issue. It was a misperception because Toney really killed Ralph over Tracie. His delay in getting rid of him made it seem it was over a horse when it was really for a bigger reason. However it created a perception and he didn’t have as much trust with his captains as before. Ralph’s legacy was actually fairly pivotal. Though there was other reasons behind the war with NY, the Ginny Sack joke got the ball rolling. He was in some respect the bridge between the more innocent, upbeat seasons of the Sopranos to the darker, war years of last seasons of the Sopranos.

Well, you know, since Sopranos is about the non-redemption of its characters, you could argue that no character leaves as much of a consequence as you might otherwise expect. Like, even Ade is sort of insignificant on terms of the great scheme of things, outside of Christopher being kinda sad here and there. Ralphie is maybe the most significant in terms of group dynamic, because his death showed the Crew that made men aren't safe from Tony, which probably seals his own fate at the end. But in terms of emotional development, the whole series is about the non-effect of destroyed lives.

Tony overlooked it cause he was a top earner but anybody notice Ralph broke a mob rule: slept with his friend/associates wife? Notice also that Ro was a chronic smoker, something that usually causes cancer. It's as if Ro and Ralphie represents what could drive Jackie Sr. to death

Aside from being the murder that got people to start questioning T, his horrible effects on the women in his life, and the adding of tensions with NY (these things never really go away, they mostly just pile on to a situation that goes back and forth between cold and hot), I'd say his main contribution seems to be taking the families construction empire up a few notches. It's made pretty clear on several occasions that the boost in family profits isn't just due to the new ventures with NY and that he has a central role in it. Those increased profits and turning that crew into the most profitable left an impact that we'd see play out later with Vito and other lines.

One weakness in the writing of The Sopranos, we're TOLD over and over again that characters like Ralph or Vito are 'good earners' but we're never actually SHOWN that they're incompetent socially on screen but somehow very competent at cash flow, and so I never really buy it.

One thing I’ve pondered: it wouldn’t be out of character for Ralphie to want Jackie out of the house so that he can have Rose for himself. Could Jackie have told the card game story to deliberately set him up for a whacking. He knew that Jackie would most certainly botch the job. Thoughts?

Ralphie's main legacy was the Aprille crew and the Esplanade project. He made the fiomer a far more successful crew than Gigi could ever come close to doing and even improved on the record of the crew's founder, Richie Aorille and at least equalled Jackie Aprille's record. And though Vito Spatafore through his hard work managed to exceed Ralph's success, he did so by building on Ralph's own success, Vito succeeded by standing on tbe shoulders of the giant that was Ralph Cifaretto. And Ralph's hard work and devotion to the Esplanade ptoject turned it into the money machine it remained throughout the entirety of the series, making vast sums of money for not only the New Jersey family but New York as well. . .

I think he’s a truly sick individual as a person. He’s very much into sadism and masochism not just sexually but in his treatment of others in everyday life. He’s truly a sociopath that feels no empathy. The only thing that truly got to him emotionally was his son’s tragic accident. Which, frankly surprised me. Even though I personally think there is an emotional biological bond that strongly connects parents & children. Some people are clearly too mentally & emotionally sick to feel it or treat it like it’s precious. But, apparently Ralph did. It was only then that Ralph had feelings of wanting to change until Tony brought up Valentina.

I honestly think Tony would have been better off telling his crew he ended up killing Ralphie cause he was a piece of shit no one liked, and he had it coming. I mean whether it was about the horse, Tracy, his history of insults, or whatever, the truth is Ralph was gonna wind up dead because of some bullshit he pulled. It would have been better for Tony to admit this instead of casting doubt by implying New York had something to do with it. This was the point where his crew started to realize he was not trustworthy as a boss.

I think Ralph legit changed toward the end of his last episode and would have been a reformed man (well by mob standards) had he lived. He would have still been an evil mobster and all that entails, but he would have quit all the crazy stuff - the coke, the nastiness, cruelty, all the crazy violence (the gladiator stuff, killing hooahs etc). Tony has a dream in a later episode where he sees bald Ralph in his car with a caterpillar crawling on his bald head, wondering if this means he killed Ralph just as he changed into a butterfly.

He was trying to be a good father to Jackie Jr? I think the point of the Jackie Jr story was less about Jackie Jr and more from a parental View if a kid doesn't have anyone around to steer them in a positive direction he's going to go in a negative Direction especially when it's all around him. The path of least resistance

Since Ralph died tony lost his ability to fight the New York guys cause ralph was his last top earner and tony killed all his other earners. So when he does this is when tony is forced to accepted Vito even tho he is gay because the family wasn’t earning nearly enough to handle all their beef. So Ralphy dying pretty much was the final nail in the coffin for tony. Because all he had left was vito and Vito was gay which angered New York
