When a person lies 33 times in 90 minutes, you can’t “fact check” everything without throwing both debaters off their game. They refuted the big ones… baby killing and pet eating, because they couldn’t let those stand (some people actually believed they are true, and needed to hear it refuted). Honestly letting Donald do his thing gave Kamala the opportunity to use the material she had prepared to beat him… and she did great!

In practice it's challenging and risky to do so to a consistent standard, so I think it should be reserved for blatant lies, as ABC did very well. As for the rule changes, the negotiations with the campaign weren't public so we don't know exactly what was agreed but policies like this are all signed off by the broadcaster (at levels of seniority higher than the moderators) and the campaign directors.

I also disagree about the fact checking. At the ABC debate, the moderators weren't fact checking in the moment. They countered statements that Trump had already repeatedly said PRIOR TO THE DEBATE. They were prepared, had done their homework -- they had fact checked these blatant lies prior to the debate. So when he felt free to state them as truths, they could cut in and challenge him. If Kamala had been similarly making blatant lies or extreme distortions over and over, they could have challenged her. But she hadn't. It was not unequal treatment of the candidates. What was unequal was that Trump had insistently and persistently made these outrageous statements. Equalizing the two candidates is very wrong.

As a voter I really appreciate the moderators fact checking all participants. That being said, for nuances and points of view based on facts, then the debaters are responsible for calling each other out. Sarah’s point at 16:36 is EXACTLY how I feel, and this is what I’ve been telling my wife. As a kid in the 80s I was totally confused and bewildered as to how an entire country would go along with fascism or nazism. Now I understand it completely.

Go read some of his speeches in English. Eerily similar to MAGA. We have always had American nazis in this country. People like Henry ford donated money to the German and American nazi party. They were written about glowingly in the New York Times. Google the American nazi party Madison square garden photo from the 1940s. Instead of a swastika they have a huge painting of George Washington. Very creepy. A cohort of them ingratiated themselves into the American conservative movement in the 1950s

I’ve also been struck by how cowardly so many elected officials have been and how willing to turn their backs on values they’ve professed to hold for a long time.

As a black woman I was not confused about that. It generally baffles me that people could be so oblivious and just lack the ability to empathize with other people. It's not like we haven't been out spoken about the dehumanization of marginalized people. We are usually met with apparently protest somewhere really quiet as to continue to be out of sight thus out of mind.
