What size tank do you recommend for a pair to 3 of bumblebees? I have been looking into these guys alot and really love this specific species. Do the require a temperature gradient?
@Aquarimax3 жыл бұрын
I would say a 20 gallon for a pair, and I now keep my trip in a 29-gallon. They don’t really need a gradient...a temp in the mid 70s is ideal, though this particular species can dip a little lower or go a little higher. I’d definitely try to stay above 65 and below 85 F.

I have bubble bee dart frogs and was overwhelmed at 1st but once I got used to it I really enjoyed it. What I do differently is that feeding them is my favorite part so I feed them slightly less food than I saw in your video but more often around 5 times a week. I also bought a misting system as I sometimes have work from 8am till 10pm

I've been looking into getting some dart frogs myself. One thing that's been bothering me is the breeding thing. I'd rather not have to deal with that. So what should I do to deter it?
@Aquarimax6 жыл бұрын
redwa11er great question! Fortunately it has an easy answer, If you don’t provide an egglaying site, they won’t breed. I kept my dart frogs for 2.5 years with no breeding, and then when I added an egglaying site, they started breeding. See my recent video on this topic for more details: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bafMpnSMndt6sNE

Would small frog species like this eat things like scuds as well? If they were present in a small water area?
@Aquarimax6 жыл бұрын
Aliesha Thompson Intriguing question! Judging from the way the frogs go after flies that fall into water-filled deli cups, and my suspicion that they once ate one of their tadpoles out of a small water area...they probably would, if the water were shallow enough. 😊👍
@alieshathompson63636 жыл бұрын
@@Aquarimax Awesome, so trying that as a live food on the occasion is an option😄 One more question if that's okay😅 If I had a bioactive setup, with a small species of frog as an inhabitant and had a small pond in the form of an exposed area of my drainage layer, and introduced a few of those to said drainage layer (and maybe an aquatic snail or two?) would that serve as water quality control whilst having potential to let them chance feed?
@Aquarimax6 жыл бұрын
Aliesha Thompson That could certainly be worth a try, but any moss, plant roots, etc. in contact with them water would probably end up being munched in by the scuds.
@alieshathompson63636 жыл бұрын
@@Aquarimax Ahhh yeah, that's true. I suppose I'll just have to see what happens and hopefully it works out, at the monent all the plant roots are sticking to the soil layer and out of the drainage layer so hopefully that'll give them some pretection and the scuds will keep themselves busy doing their intended job. Then I just have to hope that the frogs will keep the scud population under control by chance feeding😅 Thanks so much for all the help!!! You have an amazing channel, such a wealth of knowledge and it's all so interesting! You've really opened my eyes to things like the power of isopods and the many adorable varieties they come in😄 As well as a lot of other things, so thanks heaps and I hope you have a great day! Rocky Mann thank you! Good question. Dart frogs need very high humidity, but to tell you the truth, I don’t think many dart frog keepers bother to measure the humidity. With a multilayer bioactive substrate with a reservoir of water in the drainage layer and relatively little ventilation, the humidity stays within the appropriate range.

MrPoohbae1000 I use the hardwood lump charcoal in my springtail cultures, it works great, just be careful not to breath it the dust of you break it up. Honestly I don’t usually break it up for my springtail cultures, I just use lots of the smaller pieces and a few of the big ones. It also works well in substrate mixes such as ABG mix, many times the chunks look as if they haven’t been broken at all.

Very cool! How big of an enclosure do these guys need? I recently acquired an exo-terra 12x12x18 recently and was wondering what I could keep in it - the small size makes most herps a no-go. If I can keep any herps I'll probably set it up for a larger praying mantis species or am arboreal tarantula.
@Aquarimax7 жыл бұрын
staplerSen great question! The rule of thumb is about 10 gallons per frog, and even one would need more floor space than a 12 x 12 x 18 would provide. However, there are some of the thumbnail dart frogs that could thrive in a vivarium of that size. There are also some micro geckos that would do very well. You've got some herp options, though inverts are a good way to go as well. 👍
@staplersen91717 жыл бұрын
Aquarimax I've been doing research on other places online and I've gotten a reccomendation for a pair of D. ventrimaculatus or a small (1-3) colony of mourning geckos. I'm going with the bumble bee toad instead. It can take higher heat levels. I live in TX san antonio and it's too hard to control temp for me unless I had some kind of expensive decked out frog room : ( But that being said... If you can master the temp control and create a sweet enclosure then bumble bee dart frogs or any dart frogs are amazing pets! Great video!!!
@Aquarimax6 жыл бұрын
The Master Grief Collection Thank you! I can totally understand why you would choose bumblebee toads in your situation...that is a species I would like to keep someday as well 😊👍
@soyborne.bornmadeandundone13426 жыл бұрын
I experimented with cold packs that I freeze and cycle in and out. But sadly... The temp readers over the day STILL managed to make it up to 84 degrees at a point in time and I even had the house AC running to try to keep the house at about 78 degrees tops. The cold packs work for about 3 hours which have dropped the temp to a nice low 70's but then become pretty much useless a little bit too quickly sad to say. I work 9-10 hours a day so it's not going to work out very well... Gotta get that frog room one day lol. I guess I could have the AC running in the house while I'm out but that would be quite expensive... : ( I really REALLY want to keep that red colored dart frog. Sadly I hear it's one of the hardest dart frogs to keep. Just my luck right? My favorite colored dart frog isn't easy lol. For now though... I'm going to try and get the bumble bee toad as soon as I can find a sale. Sadly they are some what hard to get a hold of : ( Damn amphibians... Why can't there be one that can stand temperatures of 100 degrees??? LOL! I own whites tree frogs... They can handle about 85 and even 90 at times so they work just fine and are hilarious. Love those guys : )
@Aquarimax6 жыл бұрын
The Master Grief Collection Bumblebee dart frogs can tolerate peaks of 85 on occasion, but most don’t do well at those temps. I am glad you can keep White’s tree frogs though, and I hope you can locate some bumblebee toads soon. Have you tried Josh’s Frogs?
@soyborne.bornmadeandundone13426 жыл бұрын
Love Joshes frogs. I respect what they do with a iron fist. Breeding ALL of those animals must NOT be easy. Lots of knowledge, hard work, micro managing, timing, scheduling, experimentation, contamination procedures, and luck etc etc goes into that. I tried to raise some whites tree frog tadpoles last year and failed miserably... I got 20 of them and only 3 morphed into froglets. 1 escaped because I'm stupid. 1 died because it was deformed with a bent spine. And the last 1 died because I some how didn't give it enough hydration I think... Even though I misted him and gave him a water dish... I don't know what happened... It was a bad experience... My only failure with keeping amphibians : ( Apparently I'm bad at raising tadpoles... But most amphibians in their tadpole/young frog lives are supposed to die easily. A sad but true fact of the animal... I guess that's why they have hundreds to thousands of baby eggs lol. Perhaps I just had some bad luck and made too many mistakes? Not sure... But for now I'm scared to try it again. Maybe one day I will give it another shot... I did talk to Joshes frogs recently about the BB toad. Sadly they are not sure when they will get some for sale. They got a lot going on so it's hard for them to say when they will have some ready. Sadly the best thing to do is to just sub to their web site and they will notify you as soon as they are available. I can wait though... No rush. I was also worried about the over night shipping in this terribly hot weather so perhaps I should wait closer to october... I did find some available on this one site. They have 5 available but only one problem... They are wild so it's more risky to purchase them. I think I should wait until the end of this year before getting some. Hopefully I luck out and end up getting these awesome lil guys. I did buy a wild caught tiger monkey tree frog a few months ago. Got him at a herp show. I know it was kind of risky but it worked out great. He eats just fine. The temp isn't too hard on him down here in tx. Very weird looking but pretty looking frog lol. Very similar in look and care to a red eyed tree frog. He's more sensitive to higher temps than a whites tree frog but it seems tough enough. It is kind of a boring animal though. It doesn't do anything about 99 % of the time haha. I have never even seen it eat even though I know it does lol. Sadly I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it's wild. It's not used to humans and a aquarium... I saw him open his eyes once though! LOL! I breed those red runner turkish roaches. Coat their food in vitamins and calcium. The baby roaches are actually VERY small and I'm sure that even poison dart frogs could eat them. You probably already knew that though but if you didn't... It's very easy to raise that roach... I used to keep dubias but they get pretty big and I noticed they take much longer to grow and reproduce compared to the red runner roaches. Maybe if I had a mean old monitor lizard or african bullfrog then dubias would be perfect lol. But I prefer the red runners. Seems easier to deal with in my experience. All I do is have a wal mart plastic xmas tree sized dark blue none see through tub lined with smooth tape on the upper inside so that those lil suckers can't climb out and infest my house haha. A few egg shell carton things. I forget what they are called but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. The stuff that the roaches basically use as a home. I got a heat mat underneath to keep the temp at about 85-90. And of course I have water crystals in lil doggie bowls. I scratched up the sides of the doggy bowls to sort of create lil ladders for the bugs to climb up in easily. It makes them harder to clean but hey... They are bugs... Who cares? LOL! You don't have to do much cleaning anyways... Beats raising crickets right? So much harder and omg... The smell! These roaches are also pretty bad at climbing so they are fairly easy to contain without them escaping into your house easily. I feed the roaches that roach food you can buy online. Also fish flakes. And about once a week I will give the bugs a grape fruit. It cost slightly over 100 bucks to get everything I needed to breed them effectively and probably close to 100 bucks a year in food supplies if that... Pretty cheap way to successfully feed every bug eating pet you desire lol. I wish roaches were more popular... I think people just have silly phobias. Crickets are actually more annoying and gross than a roach could ever be lol. Roaches tend to be healthier food sources for the animals too! If you ask me... Crickets should take a back seat compared to roaches when it comes to feeding your pet reptiles and amphibians. That's what I do with them lil buggers anyways. The only draw back is that they reproduce about 1000 times faster than my turtles and frogs can eat them lol. I have to give em away or sell them to a pet store every 2 months-ish to keep the population from over flowing. Not to be gross but... The roach poop is great fertilizer lol. My tomato garden kicked ass this year haha. I know I know... Perhaps that was too much info... Just saying is all lol. I'm interested in doing bean beetles. You breed those right? Is it easy? I heard it's very easy. I heard the fruit flies are harder though so I might stick to fruit flies as sort of a treat that I just buy online or from a store from time to time. So my main diet for the bumble bee toad is going to be very small red runners. Then bean Beatles and spring tails. And finally fruit flies as a treat basically. I think that will cover variety efficiently... Anyways... Sorry to talk your ear off. I just don't know many people who are into this hobby : ( Thanks again for the tips!

The Master Grief Collection I wish I could raise roaches...my wife has forbidden them after living in Hawaii for 3 years with wild roaches...if I ever get a separate facility for creatures I can try them then...I agree they must be so much easier than crickets!

No, i always hydrate them, I'm using natural/wheat bran for their substrate, and already quarter of my colony have died because of that. And also I found out that if i just leave old food and the mites in there, the crickets get basically their natural habitat and apparently they are larger than all of my colony's of crickets! And I'm using carrots but sadly some of them get dehydrated by the mites :-(

Andrew Chen Tell me more, I am not quite sure I understand. You have crickets and mealworms together? How deep is the substrate you are using?
@andrewchen18537 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have mealworms AND crickets because I want to vary the diet for my praying mantis and my other pets. And my substrate isn't that deep, its about 5cm high and 20-30 cm long. I use a drawers.

Andrew Chen unusual problem...I wonder if more substrate would help?

How many inches will Bumblebee become when adult?
@Aquarimax7 жыл бұрын
ASSA Good question! They stay fairly small...about 2 inches long or so. 👍
@Tetra7537 жыл бұрын
My bumblebee is still young but its growth is not good... It's about 3 cm.
@Aquarimax7 жыл бұрын
ASSA How old is it? That doesn't sound bad for a juvenile.
@Tetra7537 жыл бұрын
It was nice to hear that! He is within 1 year of age.

ASSA I think there's a good chance your frog could still grow. 👍

Dude..you are awesome..keeping it simple and easy. I got my tabnk set up with live olanta..been about five days now without frogs living in it..I really want to do bumble bee dart frogs, been debating it for three weeks now and this video did it for me. I'm going to take the leap. Lol. Question: the top of my 12 by 12 by 18 tank, the covering has a ventilated screen, do I need to change it to a glass covering top to control the humidity better or will the ventilated screen work for dart frog? Anyways, subscribed and liked this video already!

thxiong1987 Thank you for watching and subscribing! Great question...Yyou will probably want to cover most of the screen, but a little ventilation will be beneficial....in several of my vivariums, I use glass panels over 80-90% of the screen, (neherpetoculture.com sells the glass panels cut to fit several popular vivarium sizes). It works quite well, although in very high humidity, the screen will eventually rust.

Hi.im just looking at getting my first dart frogs.the bumble bee frogs look great,but dont they have a loud call?
@Aquarimax4 жыл бұрын
hydraman5 I don’t find the call extremely loud. It is very birdlike, and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone else in the house.

What is their lifespan?
@Aquarimax4 жыл бұрын
RaptorCookiez Accordino to Josh’s Frogs, they can often live around 10 years, but double that is possible. 👍

I’m having trouble with humidity vs. heat vs. light with the open top on my vivarium. I put plexiglass on the top and have a fogger, which works, but it puts a ton of water up top that just floods the substrate. Any suggestions on humidity ranges?

@@Aquarimax no. But I need one for sure
@Aquarimax2 жыл бұрын
@@hudsontoo1212 that would likely solve the issue. A digital one would allow for finer control. 👍🏽
@hudsontoo12122 жыл бұрын
@@Aquarimax nice! Yeah- I just want them to be healthy. I’ve got the humidity at pretty much 75% all the time, but the bigger deal may be how much they eat and then, the water under the substrate STINKS!!! I suction it out every day but smells 🤢

Hmmm…something has gone awry…does the water level overflow past the drainage layer into the ABG layer?

Super Shepherd they may put holes in your plants, and crickets are usually a pain to keep (Atleast for me) but they will eat them when presented to them
