Henlo, dear friends! There is some really good and important info in this video, especially regarding the treatment of bumblefoot. That being said, unfortunately, there is one fairly significant mistake in this video. Bumblefoot is *not* considered contagious by the general consensus among experts. In the video, I presented it as so, and for that, I apologize. If I had to do it over again, I would discuss my nuanced take on the idea that bumblefoot is not contagious because I have a different take on it. Please see my thoughts in this correction video (please watch it all the way through because I do give some important info in the second half): kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGq7kI2BnZmAo7s

I had an outbreak of bumblefoot in my flock several years ago. The infections started after purchasing wood shavings from a local shutter factory. The wood was imported from Africa. I treated my affected hens with removal of the bumble and packing the wound with sulfa powder. The hens wore a "boot" for several days after the removal procedure. Importantly, I removed the imported wood shavings and returned to using hay and leaves in the coop. Those shavings had something funky in them!

One of my hens was limpimg. The sore on her pad got hot, red, and it swelled. Soaking wasn't helping. A hard pocket of pus developed above her claw. I found an avian vet who emptied the pocket. Antibiotics, painkiller, and an Xray to confirm no bone infection. She stayed inside until the meds were finished. The treatment wasn't cheap. But the thought of prying out the corn without controlling pain was something I couldn't do.

My girls didn’t even squirm. Then I flushed the “hole” with saline, then bandaged. It definitely works. But I am excited to have another option for treatment! Edit I forgot to add I use chlorhexidine acetate ointment! It is a antiseptic used for bacterial and fungal infections in animals.

Aloe Vera, distilled water glycerin After it softens up use colonic silver then apply drawing salve and wrap. Then days later again the Epson salt poultice and a couple days later see if it’s piped or u can squeeze it out . Chronic infections in your flock can also be caused by a Vitamin A deficiency. This deficiency can make them susceptible to other things like conjunctivitis and sinusitis, too. If you can't find anything in your flock's environment that may be causing wounded feet---and if their perch is comfortable, wide and smooth---perhaps a Vitamin A deficiency could be an underlying cause. This is pretty unlikely in birds that have access to green pasture, since grass itself is a very good source of vitamin A. Bumblefoot is a serious problem, but it's not contagious in the way a cold is contagious. A knowledgeable vet would be able to explain further The other kind of infection touching skin-to-skin can spread a diff kind of staph from one person to another. Staph can be picked up from surfaces that are often touched, like phones or doorknobs. Sometimes shared personal items, like towels, soap, or sports equipment can spread staph. Pus from an abscess is especially contagious on skin or surfaces..

We have our first bumble foot infection in our small 7-chicken flock. I was able to have a mobile vet come and inspect everything. She said we caught it super early, thankfully. None are limping, but everyone has at least one black spot. She gave us an antibiotic cream (silver based) to put on their feet daily, but said we don't need to soak at this time. She thinks this should clear it up. So we are watching closely. I only noticed because I had one chicken who needed a butt rinse and I checked her feet and saw it. Then I checked everyone's feet. I kind of freaked out and watched ALL the videos and of course didn't want to do anything invasive. So thankful for our mobile vet. We are close to an excellent university vet hospital, but it's so expensive and stressful to get the chickens seen there, especially with bird flu precautions (birds must be isolated upon arrival), that I wouldn't have been able to get all of them examined. Glad to know what you do for your flock. I do have some Prid and Epsom salts, bathing tubs, vet wrap, antiseptic (I use chlorhexadine), all just in case, and I'm spraying off their roosting area with Oxine. Thank you for all your good info!

There were situations to be changed; the ones who accompanied us out into woods and beaches and asphalt wore shoes (Crazy-K Farms) The ones that walked mainly on hay and grass were usually okay. My cockeral is addicted to air conditioning and clean, fluffy blankets. He has the softest green dinosaur feet I've ever seen, so he is getting shoes. We had the whole setup on the farm; iodine, biopsy punches, vet wrap...and ICE of course. We held it against the area before using the biopsy punch. Trying to make sure he doesn't get them harmed, but he likes to jump down OFF the highest places he can find. (teenagers...) He has a mix of feed pellets, peanut and lard pellets, crushed corn, grubs and mealworms out all the time. He forages outside for hours every day, and, of course, from our dinner plates and the dog's dish during the evenings. Okay, I've seen some handy soaking tubs. Depending on the chicken's size; up to Sterlite totes have been used, with a hold in the top for the bather's head.

Had the odd episode with bumblefoot, thankfully it has never affected any others. I used the vet's disinfectant wash "Hibiscrub", diluted to bathe the feet (Inga the Swedish Flower hen that wasn't - the worst of the demon twins had it on both feet). I had some horse poultice pads and I cut them to size and then used vetwrap. It took about a week to get the biggest one out - just popped and the core came with it. Then it was just vetwrap without the poultice for a couple of days because it healed very quickly. I still bathed it though to make sure. I do have Epsom salts in case any hen is egg bound. Good to know that it works for the footsies too! Easier for ducks if they get it, because bandaging a duck foot is soooo tricky - and it comes off quick. Cheers and all the best.

QUESTION: The chicken I have that has bumble foot? Has feathers on her legs and feet and when we tried to wrap it the feathers when we removed the wrap? Was causing sores. And it wasn’t wrapped tight. I’m a nurse so I’m going to try and get some different booties. I thought about a VERY small amount of blu kote just to keep it sealed cause the top of her foot was so taught like a huge bubble and it needed to be drained and I’m so glad we did cause the amount of pus and drainage and kernel that did come out! We didn’t even barely Lance it. Multiple pieces came out. But we’re still soaking and cleansing frequently. It has gotten WAY better. Now, I also have a green queen who’s limping but we haven’t seen anything in her foot. Not sure why she’s not putting weight on her right foot. But maybe it’s not surfaced yet. I’m still trying to figure out what else it could be! Thanks for this video. Any thoughts on blu kote? I know it’s frowned on by some. Her foot it is also larger than the other foot as well (no heat, no pain). She also has been super broody too. 😩 There are no vets that treat poultry in my area as well too. 😢 One thing I fine helpful is using those finger bandages they wrap around their feet nicely & makes wrapping with vet wrap super easy! I have to say, treating bumblefoot can be a stressful time for both the chicken and the owner. Especially if it's a chicken who doesn't like to be handled. If on a small scale, do you think (in addition to soaking & super-cleaning the coop) that tolfinate cream would help? (it's an anti-fungal) 🐔❤🐔
@WelcometoChickenlandia3 ай бұрын
I would compare it more to an abscess than athlete's foot since staph is a bacteria rather than a fungus (you're 100% correct about vent gleet, though). I don't think an antifungal would do the trick, although might have some healing effect. You would need something anti-bacterial.

I’m going to address this today in a correction video I made that’s premiering at 10 am Pacific Time. I want to clear up my contagious claim, because it’s not entirely correct. I have a very bad situation with one of my chickens. The growths are growing up between her toes. She limps. I had been giving her amoxi… something? Antibiotic but it doesn’t seem to work. It’s really bad. I haven’t soaked her feet. I’ll try that. She was also given an anti inflammatory drops. That seems to be doing a little better. I have also iced it, and she seems to like that. Are there any other suggestions?

Can you ask your vet if it could possibly be gout rather than bumblefoot? If it’s an infection like bumblefoot, the amoxicillin should clear it up. It might take about two weeks, though.

for roost disinfectant i use F10 veterinary disinfectant, diluted appropriately and left to dry before the girls go back on them. i try to have at least one spare roost in reserve for times like this. its available at most feed and exotic animal supply stores as well as amazon

Hey, so sorry! I forgot to put the links! Please check the description now and you will find the epsom salt link. :-) Its people kind and will work fine but its different than the Redmond Salt, which is excellent stuff but I wouldn't want to waste it on chicken feet haha.

I noticed a couple in my flock have the dark spots on their feet but they aren't limping. I've been bathing, treating and wrapping one that is. Should I do something for the hens who aren't limping? I just recently learned that a muddy run could cause bumblefoot and we've had non stop rain this summer. I didn't realize 😕

I had no idea that this bacterial type infection could be passed on. I always thought that the chicken, stepped on something and they got a hole in their foot, and then that's how it started, but I guess if that bacteria is all over there perching area, it's all possible. I never considered it, but thank you.Thank you thank you.

Bentonite clay with aloe, I would try first. It will suck out and dry up the infection. It's really good for a lot of things.

I have a question not related to your topic: I have 36 hens and 3 roosters. They free range now, but I still give them fermented grains twice a day. Every time I come out the door they swarm me, I can't even walk. I have to carry a stick to try and make a path for me to walk. It's horrible, but I don't know what to do.

Tea tree oil is incredibly effective against staph. Edit: Anti-Fungal, Anti-Microbial & Anti-Bacterial
@WelcometoChickenlandia3 ай бұрын
Yes, it's great stuff. I'm hesitant to recommend it topically for chickens since it can be caustic if used undiluted. I would say if someone wants to use it, make sure to dilute it in a carrier oil.

Three bacteria are usually associated with this. Target the bacteria based on their individual weaknesses. Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Escherichia, with Staph. aureus being the most common cause of the infection

I think/ thought one of my girls might have bumblefoit last summer and I'm not sure it went totally away, and I know it can come back and even spread, so I always keep a close eye on her!! I also thought maybe it was scaley leg mites, so I treated for both, (not with surgery, got a boot and did lots of soaking in Epsom salt) and she did get better, mostly. But now she has vent gleet and another lady is acting not quite right, so I'm losing my mind 😂. My mature (laying) girls do roost way up high in the rafters, so I thought maybe that jump off the rafters in the morning was contributing, but she voluntarily started roosting on one of the lower spots. I'm also planning on using the hemp bedding when I change it out this fall......I wish you could just come check out my flock 😂

We had a bumblefoot outbreak, 2 of my flock of 25-30, right after i bought some hemp bedding off Amazon. Haven't bought it since, and no problems since. It's not sharp things, because our property is filled with broken glass, rusty nails, staples, cacti, etc.. i think i used a tea tree oil spray, but it's been a year, so I'm honestly not even sure. One of the hens got better. Unfortunately, my Bearded Lady passed. 😔
