Henlo, friends! Thanks for watching this correction video. This was not easy for me but I had to make it right! I hope you will stay and watch the whole video. I think there's some important info in the second half about why I think we should still treat Bumblefoot as contagious. I would love all of you to hear my thoughts on that, and I think it's pretty important.

You have done the right thing, Dahlia. This info and your experience are important. What you say about staph is true. My adult son, who had staph aged 15, had an injury that brought staph back at 44. He is battling it as we speak. We all have these things, like staph, like cancer, lying in wait. We can only do our best. It sounds like you did your best, too. Blessings from a chicken less cat lady in Australia.

In a sense you are not incorrect...... [STAPH BACTERIA can live on surfaces for hours, days, weeks, or even months, depending on the surface. Staph bacteria can survive on many surfaces, including: Towels, Furniture, Dust, Mop heads, and Blankets.] So, it makes sense that if 1 chicken contracts it due to a wound, etc, I'd think that it could spread it to locations other chickens would also step. Of course there probably needs to be an opening in the skin surface for it to enter in.

I think the confusion comes in because sometimes the infection (staph) that might result from bumblefoot is indeed contagious. If bumblefoot is from a cut or other injury and scabs over, it won't necessarily become a staph infection and can sometimes ultimately resolve itself. So no, bumblefoot alone isn't contagious. It's the potential infection from it that is. You have a wonderful channel, and I enjoy your content very much. Thank you for being so thoughtful and addressing people's concerns. ❤

@@WelcometoChickenlandia I know that in people we don't really get an infection unless there is a break in natural barrier, skin. So if a person has a wound and they don't keep it clean and covered in sterile dressings and always thoroughly wash your hands before and after changing dressings it is possible to get infection including staff. Chickens could have a small wound and get infection also.

I'm very interested to know what you think. I need your investigative talent! I have a theory: Bumblefoot is said to not be contagious chicken to chicken because if it's agreed that it is, factory farms would have to quarantine infected chickens and do whatever else they have to do to follow protocol for contagious disease. In other words, it would hurt the bottom line for factory farms. But I don't know, this is just a theory from my limited knowledge. Super interested in what you think!!

Staff is infectious. If it wasn't, an antibiotic wouldn't be needed. It might be treated otherwise without an antibiotic, but depends on the cause. staff, fungus, yeast, bacteria, virus can be infectious under the right conditions. THANK YOU. I just don't get it. I keep thinking what am I missing? Why would it be contagious to us and not chicken to chicken? I wonder if it has to do with the fact that in a factory farm, if it's deemed contagious then they would have to quarantine and it would present some significant difficulties (and probably hurt the bottom line). But I didn't want to say that in the video because I'm already opening a can of worms and didn't want to get into that. LOL *sigh*

I personally would use active charcoal on the chickens feet and roost bar. It draws out infection. It would help avoid the other chickens from getting it as well. It’s good you made this video, because there is a lot of different information out there. Some people believe that that these illnesses can be bred out of chickens if they are allowed to fight it off on their own, like we do with illnesses. I don’t know if I could do that with my birds because I love them and don’t have them for breeding purposes. So for me I would try to save my chickens. Omg ! Why are you the first person I've ever heard recommend disinfecting the roost bars ? Why did I never think of this ?! 🤦‍♀️ I've been on a social media break, this is the first of your videos that I've seen in a bit. I didn't even watch the video on bumblefoot that you're referring to here, but with a golden nugget like that, I'm gonna go back and watch it ! Thank you !!! I'm really kicking myself, but tomorrow, those roost bars are getting disinfected

- Bumblefoot Epson salt poultice jar for horses applied and wrapped up Or make Epson salt . Aloe Vera, distilled water glycerin After it softens up use colonic silver then apply drawing salve and wrap. Then days later again the Epson salt poultice and a couple days later see if it’s piped or u can squeeze it out . Chronic infections in your flock can also be caused by a Vitamin A deficiency. This deficiency can make them susceptible to other things like conjunctivitis and sinusitis, too. If you can't find anything in your flock's environment that may be causing wounded feet---and if their perch is comfortable, wide and smooth---perhaps a Vitamin A deficiency could be an underlying cause. This is pretty unlikely in birds that have access to green pasture, since grass itself is a very good source of vitamin A. Bumblefoot is a serious problem, but it's not contagious in the way a cold is contagious. A knowledgeable vet would be able to explain further The other kind of infection touching skin-to-skin can spread a diff kind of staph from one person to another. Staph can be picked up from surfaces that are often touched, like phones or doorknobs. Sometimes shared personal items, like towels, soap, or sports equipment can spread staph. Pus from an abscess is especially contagious on skin or surfaces..

I used the poultice for horses but was hesitant to share it because I didn’t have any info on others using it!

Sounds contagious to me. I appreciate your clarification and your concern for all of us. I personally will be looking out for possible spreading if one of our chickens gets it.

Glad you are so open and conscientious. That video on bumble foot was great for me because you showed how to wrap it. I don’t have it at the moment but have had it in the past with chickens and guinea pigs. But I do have a crippled hen that I raised as a tiny rescue chick with a broken leg. Her leg healed but apparently there was nerve damage in her foot so her toes don’t flare out. I have tried making prosthetics for her and she is much more able to walk with support but it never stayed on. I think I can just wrap it like you do and it might work for her. So thanks for sharing what you do for your flock. And remember, if you say something not exactly perfectly, your following will give you feedback. We learn from each other. ❤

I think a person stands so tall when they can correct something they may have said, or have done. I trust people more when they can do that. We are human, and all make mistakes. I was thinking the same thing about the staff part, that it can spread. I do believe in keeping clean where your babies are. You are awesome! Hope you enjoying getting away and spending it with your family.

This is exactly why I trust you so much! You not only take ownership for a mistake, but you explain why it occurred and what you could’ve done better. In this case, it was more complicated than “I said this word when I really meant that word”. So you explained clearly that the “mistake” was the way you implied that what you said was a fact when the better way to explain it would’ve been, “here’s the official answer, but I also want to contextualize this and explain why it could seem to be contagious when it may not technically be classified that way.” This only increases my respect for you, President Dahlia! If it’s ok with you, I’d like to include your example in my sermon tomorrow morning about how we take responsibility for not only the “facts” we share, but also for the broader truthfulness, helpfulness, and integrity of our communication with others. You’re a great leader!

Yes I watched that one. Thanks for the correction we tell the best we know AT THE TIME. I was pretty sure it was not that contagious. It IS common. Ours seemed to get small cuts when jumping and running around, and those little spots get infected. We DO treat it as it is, as in, we remove the treated animal from the rest for reasons of cleanliness. Chickens in similar bedding situations may have it due to the type of bedding or sharp points inside the chicken coop. They individually get the temporary setup in the house with fluffy blankets and air conditioning. It might be treated better earlier; it depends on how many chickens you have an how long it takes to notice they are limping. It might be cured in the early days with soaking and meds. By the time they are actually limping, it was usually the size of a pencil eraser....and we've treated them with a biopsy punch, added antibiotic ointment, and used rest and relaxation. The ones that went out and off roading with us seemed to get them more frequently. They did more climbing, jumping, exploring new environments. We bought a few pair of chicken boot, and that was no longer a problem. If you have a FLOCK it is too expensive to get them all shoes. It's okay, thank you. That's the right way to do it. If you find our you were mistaken; you change your opinion. Thank you, Queen of Chickenlandia!
