Richard Turner has achieved legendary status in the world of card magicians. However, Richard Turner is not a magician nor does he claim to be one-he demonstrates card cheating. Of course, all of this is made even more impressive given that Mr. Turner is blind. The bio-segment advertises his show as well as his motivational speaking. When one weighs his skills and accomplishments with his handicap, it's easy to see how Mr. Turner would make a most inspirational speaker.

He was in denial, not accepting that he is almost blind and hated the word "blind" - so he is faking that he can see. On this video his vision is blocked by huge pitch black circles in the middle - the size of your palm. He only sees extremely blurry shapes on the side of his eyes. Most of the time he is imagining things by sound, such as people. When he lost his vision completely a couple years later, he wasn't even aware of it for about 1 year, as he was still imagining what he thought was there. Watch the documentary "Dealt".

I just realized after watching several of his videos that I've actually sat down and spoken with this man on several occasions when I was a teen. @Steely_Fran
@Steely_Fran Жыл бұрын
For a while he didn't talk about being blind and didn't want to be introduced as being blind. He said that his blindness was irrelevant because it's never prevented him from doing anything he's wanted to do. You're right about him acting like he could see. I saw an interview where he talked about how he's been in situations where if people knew he was blind, they would know it was him. One of those times was when a card counter was being filmed playing poker for a TV show. From what I gathered, the card counter was bragging about how he was going to win. So the casino decided to bring Richard in to deal and didn't tell anybody. He said that he had to act like he could see so he wouldn't tip anyone off. They filmed for 2 hours and Richard didn't deal the card counter a single winning hand.

I remember hearing at one point Richard could read a card by feeling the ink on it's face. He's estimated to have practiced each particular card skill over 60 million times over his lifetime. Yeah, he's good.
@PaulsPubAndBrew
@PaulsPubAndBrew 2 жыл бұрын
That's a common misconception. He has superhuman touch. But he can't feel what a card is by touching the face. Nor can he sense the weight of the card based on the ink on it. When he opens a new pack of cards he rubs the edges of the deck in a certain way that make microscopic impressions across the deck. Because the deck is in new deck order at the time he did this he can feel the edges of the cards later to know what cards are what. He can't do this for all 52 cards. He might know the kings or the aces, ETC.
@khosen6592

@@PaulsPubAndBrew he can’t see so how can he tell which cards are aces or faces?
@PaulsPubAndBrew
@PaulsPubAndBrew Жыл бұрын
@@khosen6592 I explained that in my comment. He opens the deck which is in a new deck order, and he rubs the side of the deck very carefully to make invisible markings on the sides of the cards that he can feel with his crazy touching ability. Then when the cards are shuffled he can feel the sides of the cards to have an idea what they are. He doesn't do it for all 52 cards, just the cards he wants to find later for his show.
@khosen6592
@khosen6592 Жыл бұрын

It's more like this. It's easier for him since he's blind than it would be for you. When you're blind, your brain will use the resources normally used for sight for something else. Usually the other senses get strengthened. Don't get me wrong though, accomplishing something like this takes immense effort and practise, but it would be easier for a blind person to accomplish than a normal person with all senses intact.

It's not false per se, it's just reversed. You can tell his false riffles (push-through) from his genuine ones by whether he does a cut immediately after, and this applies to his one-handed too. He riffles the cards but leaves them up-jogged and then simply pulls them out in a cut.

He became blind at the age of 9, started cheating at cards at 7 i believe, after watching the television show Maverick. He had the privilege of working with professor Dai Vernon, who was considered the best in the world with a deck of cards for over half a century and was the man who fooled Houdini. But because Dai couldnt show him the tricks he had to explain them, but he didnt explain how he did them or how someone else would be able to do them, but how he wished they could have been done, just to see what turner would do. Turner was able to do the moves as Dai wished they couldve been done after thousands of hours of practice (he practised 10-20 hours a day at that time), and Dai told him what he had done afterwards. Dai went on to call Turner the most skilled card technician in the world, as he could do things no one else was able to do. Turner tells a lot about his history in the show he performed at MIT in 2017. You should look up the video, its great.

If you can do perfect shuffles consistently, it is easy to shuffle the queens into the right order. It is basic math. Let's say you have 4 queens on top and have five players. You just shuffle 5 times perfectly, and the queens will be at the 1st, 6th, 11th, and 16th position. - @flewkisdead

Four shuffles for a 5 player game rather. If you watch it carefully, the initial cut from the spectator throws me off completely. It appears that he first placed the Queens on top. Then she cut the deck. Then he shuffled twice, and asked a spectator for the number of players. Two shuffles would have put them at a 3 player stack. It would be safe to assume the person would say 2 or more. But he's already gone too far if they said just 2 players because the deck is stacked for 3. Risky! He then did two more shuffles to make it a 5 player game. Then a false strip cut to finish it off. But where were the Queens to start with?

Was there a mistake at 9:27? I would have preferred to see how he handled himself if he made a mistake.

If there was a mistake, it wasn't included in the performance video. I posted this without editing it, so that cut was done from the production's side. Sorry about that!

On the cheat dvd by richard turner there was a mistake where he placed the queens in the wrong positions and had to do it again which is where it was transitioned to in this video.

You know what's crazy? During this period, Turner was already suffering from macular degeneration. He lost his central vision. He now only has intact peripheral vision. The good thing is, thru daily training, he has hightened the sensation of his Meissner's corpuscles and Merkel's disks at his fingertips.

Went to one of those charity casino night things once. Was playing blackjack at a table and the guy dealing was an old Vegas blackjack dealer and he could do all these things. That's when I realized I'd never play Blackjack at a single deck table again. I only play out of a shoe.

The only question I have, is how in the hell do you practice doing this if you can't see? What he did at 3:00 is freaking crazy, unless he somehow swapped the deck he shuffled a few times for a deck that was already in the order he wanted. I mean, I'm sure it took years to be able to do it legitimatially, but how? If you can't really see what you're doing it seems impossible... Someone clue me in

Honestly just decades of practice. He's got a documentary called "Dealt" that explains a lot more, but he'd spend like 20 hours a day practicing for years. He'd even be one handed shuffling while in bed with his wife

The deck is already in order. He uses fake shuffles. Take for example the one handed shuffle. the cards are cut in half and interlaced, however right after he cuts the cards again putting them back into order
