Many bumper covers are thrown away simply because the tabs are broken out. These are easily repaired with FiberFlex welding rods, stainless steel mesh, and an airless plastic welder.
FiberFlex is Polyvance's "Universal" rod. FiberFlex is formulated with carbon and glass fibers for the strongest, fastest repairs. It is not a true fusion weld; instead, the FiberFlex is a hot-melt adhesive that is applied with a plastic welder. So, it is similar to a brazing process. It sticks great to polypropylene and TPO.

It's great to know that there's a way to fix broken bumper tabs. The one on my Ford Fusion has to be partially removed to swap out the headlight and fog light bulbs. And I always worried while taking it out that one day the plastic tabs were going to break. But this gives me a little bit more peace of mind.

Lekid0000, you might want to check out some of our other videos and see some of the other repairs. We do repairs with many types of products. This is using FiberFlex, so you can watch our FiberFlex playlist if you want to see some of the other FiberFlex repairs. Once the repairs are primed and painted, you often can't tell they were repaired. Some of the repairs on the back of a bumper or other hidden parts do not require refinishing, so, no, they might not look exactly like they did before an accident. The person who originally filmed this forgot to take an after shot of the repair. That happens sometimes. We are trying to make sure all of our videos going forward can show an adequate look at the repaired area when it is finished. We aren't hiding anything; we have been in business 37 years, and we know the ins and outs of plastic repair.
@scottb7600
@scottb7600 6 жыл бұрын
Total nonsense. You cannot tell a properly repaired bumper has ever had any damage in the same way a properly repaired piece of sheet metal looks brand new. Not only that, but even if you replaced the bumper you still have to paint a new bumper, which much of the time, includes repairing damage from shipping. Typically its better to repair the original bumper than it is to replace (especially with aftermarket parts) because you don't have any fitment issues like you would with a new part.

Great Video. I need to repair a rear sports bumper lip and modify it a bit. The Bumper lip is broken in two where the tail pipe goes. So I need to fix that first. Then the modification, I have put in a duel exhaust so the original tail pipe section is too short. Mod' is that I cut a wedge from the middle of the lip and cut a line under the tail pipe section. Weld the wedge and shape it a bit to match into the cut line under the tail pipe bit and then join the now cut bit in the middle of the lip. I have asked around for someone to do this and they want heaps of $$'s for it $500 plus. I don't think they want to do it. So I will try this myself with the help of these types of Videos. So you can see it is NOT easy to just go out and get another bumper lip as it also would NOT fit the new exhaust system. So there is a real world place for this type of Auto Fix. :-)

Epoxy has very poor adhesion to PP and is a major issue if the part is flexed. A tab like this is going to be flexed and stressed and I wouldn't make any bet that an epoxy repair would hold up. Don't get me wrong, epoxy has its place for sure, just not on a PP car bumper.

There's a variety of ways to do this. The technique depends on many factor's. Weight, placement on vehicle, age of vehicle etc. Example gorrila tape, flex tape, cold weld, etc. I suggest some of these methods because of the simplicity. Not everyone has space, money for extra tools, or time, especially people with multiple tabs broken. I hope this helps

"Any plastic works as long as it melts and fuses to the existing plastic". If it fuses to the existing plastic, then it is the same type of plastic as the base. You can't weld nylon to polypropylene or polyethylene to TPO. In this particular video, we are using FiberFlex which is a specialty blend of plastic and fibers. We are NOT fusing it into the base plastic. FiberFlex is used as a hot melt adhesive and it works best on TPO and polypropylene. This is not the method you would use if you want to get a fusion weld. We have other videos showing fusion welding (most videos are of nitrogen plastic welding but we also have some airless plastic welding videos).

You can use a scrap bumper as long as the bumpers are made out of the same material. You can use a nitrogen plastic welder and one of our matching welding rods to create an extremely strong fusion weld. You’ll have to consider that in order to a tab to tear the bumper cover have substantial damage. When you calculate this tab repair with the rest of the repair to the bumper cover it’s ultimately not cost effective. Now a days aftermarket bumper cover aren’t that expensive and insurance company are likely replace the cover with an aftermarket unit then write a preliminary estimate for 4-5 hours of repair time. With this being said broken tabs are usually found after disassembly. Let’s say the insurance’s preliminarily estimate has 2.5 hours of repair time to the bumper cover. After tear down the body shop discover 2 torn tabs. Let say to repair a tab is 2 hours. With only the tabs and bumper cover surface repairs your already at 6.5 hours plus Materials. Good luck trying to have the insurance company pay 6.5 hours for a bumper repair. Better yet good luck convicting your body technician to repair torn tabs.

A broken tab is absolutely no indication of the condition of the rest of the bumper. On MANY bumpers, tabs are the weakest point and if the car bumps something gently, these tabs will sheer, with no indication of other damage. You are also WAAAY over estimating the length of time it takes to repair a tab. A typical tab repair takes 15 to 20 minutes, start to finish. Insurance companies will gladly pay 6 hours of labor on a higher priced bumper. If it saves them a dollar, they will go with the cheaper option. This also benefits the shops as well because a shop makes its money on labor dollars, not on part replacement.

They actually make more on labor than they do on parts, so if they were to do the repair, the shop would make more money and the customer would save money. Its one of those few cases where its a win-win. Unfortunately, some shops just don't see the light yet.

It's not that bad, really. Plus, it keeps you from buying a new bumper (and waiting for it to arrive), and it keeps another bumper out of the landfill.

$300 for the plastic "welder"?!?! Yikes! Might need to go a different route after all

The Mini-Weld Model 7 is a whole kit for plastic repair. It contains two tips, some mesh, a cleaning brush, and 8 starter sets of welding rod. However, our FiberFlex repair kit (www.polyvance.com/Airless-Welders-1/5210/) is much cheaper and contains the welder, mesh, and rods you need to do this repair.

This is not a fusion weld, so we are not using the same material/color. FiberFlex only comes in black. Refinishing a tab isn't necessary, but you would have to paint this if you did want it to match.

But a cookie sheet from Wal-Mart and some tin snips. Cut the cookie sheet to size and screw it down with small wood screws. In 5 minutes, your done. No waiting to cure, no grinding, no problem. The tab is not visible. Screw this plastic shit.
@scottb7600
@scottb7600 5 жыл бұрын
No wait to cure on this either, plus this is way more reliable than a wood screw and you didn't waste your time or gas going to walmart, finding a suitable pan, standing in line, and driving back... In the long run its cheaper to do it right, once!

@polyvance
@polyvance 5 жыл бұрын
Not quite. Normally, you would want to match the type of plastic (for example, you would use polypropylene welding rod on a polypropylene bumper). For body shops, we would recommend a nitrogen plastic welder for the strongest and fastest repairs. For DIYers, we have our Mini-Weld Model 7 (comes with an airless plastic welder and a variety of welding rod), our PolyPro welder (an airless plastic welder with polypropylene welding rod), and our FiberFlex Repair Kit. FiberFlex (the focus of this video) is our specially made welding rod. FiberFlex is specially formulated with carbon and glass fibers for strong repairs. It is a hot-melt adhesive and does not give a true fusion weld. However, it sticks very well to polypropylene and TPO. So, no, you cannot use just any old scrap plastic you find. If you try to melt nylon onto polypropylene, the repair will not be very strong at all.

I think its funny thst youre using metal to repair plastic. If the bumper was metal to begin with there wouldnt be any issue but our car companies are cheap as fuck and just use trashy plastic. I just dont understand
@polyvance
@polyvance 5 жыл бұрын
We aren't using the metal to repair the plastic. We are using the FiberFlex universal welding rod to repair the plastic. The wire mesh is used as a reinforcement (like rebar in concrete).
