Thanks Rory - that was very challenging and was good that you went around. In all my flying at Barton I don't think I ever used the crosswind runway so that was cool too. Finally good to hear that Chris hasn't changed his approach, he used to pull me up on my RT which I thought I was pretty good at - but it all helped shape me to become a more professional and confident aviator so his and Marcus' support was very welcome :-) See you back down at Leicester soon!

Jason R Wilkinson yeah we joked about being pulled up on my RT but it’s been really good got me so I’m grateful to them. They have both been excellent tutors to me and it’s helping a lot now with my CPL H training. See you at the field soon!

@@RoryOnAir Definitely, it's easy to pick up bad habits when flying but being corrected and coached early on in my flying experience building good airmanship has been a huge help for me. So if you're reading this Chris and Marcus (and Mary!) thanks and hope to see you all soon!

Enjoyed the video Rory and good to have another one from you. Never any harm in throwing an approach away if you do not feel happy with it. I have seen too many pilots pressing on with situations where they should have just gone around!

Super video Rory, useful too, every day is a school day. There's a local airstrip with a rollercoaster of a dip hereabouts - tricky, especially with wind or wx. Nice to see you back here and the blades at the front of the aircraft LOL!

I wouldn't call that a short runway, mind you the field I learnt to fly microlight from all but one runway were around the 400m length. For me now I have an aircraft that will land with room to spare, in half that but like you it makes me twitch a bit. Always good to plan to go around. Thanks for the video.

Flying Kub yeah, I have got spoiled by the comparatively huge runway at Barton. It’s good to practice something different and of course now I don’t really need a runway at all in the heli. 😉👍

Its good to visit other airfields to gain experience. However, like in in your case at St Michaels, its really disappointing when there is no-one there and nothing to do but sign in and leave your money. I had a similar experience going to Defford last weekend.

Good to see you back in the Eurostar Rory, even if it was from the archives. If you had the choice of owning a nearly new C42 or similar aged Eurostar for your own use.. which would you choose? (No helicopters.. not yet!)
@RoryOnAir
@RoryOnAir 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Chilton Thanks Kevin. Happy memories flying Oscar Alpha. I like both aircraft types a lot, but it would have to be the Eurostar all day for me. It’s a sports car compared to a saloon and the handling is tighter. That said, it is a greenhouse and is a little more twitchy so it’s personal preference for sure. Are you faced with that choice?
@kevchilton908

I currently have a share in a Rockwell Commander, so I’m more used to quite a heavy plane with complex systems. At some point in the future I will relocate to Kent and will be looking to buy my own plane.. something like the two you fly. (I’m also be interested in the new Skyranger that Ben flys on his channel). Your comments are very interesting, and have certainly given me something to think about. My main aim will be touring around the UK and maybe Europe. So I would definitely appreciate the speed aspect. Sounds like the Eurostar does fit most of my criteria! 👌 Thank you for your thoughts Rory, which are very helpful 👍

When you learn to fly from 600 meter runways then 400 meters looks short when its not really any problem for most microlights. Shortest one I have done is Courseulles at 200 meters and your first thought is that its a model flying site.
@SteveMiddleton
@SteveMiddleton 4 жыл бұрын
It’s 400m, but some of it is unusable on landing due to the hedges. Rory did a great job. One happy passenger 👍
@RoryOnAir
@RoryOnAir 4 жыл бұрын
Frank Thorne yeah, absolutely Frank. It’s all relative. I know pilots who say Barton is a bit short because they are used to a mile of tarmac somewhere else. I had plenty of room to spare in the end but I didn’t see the point in pushing it on the first go. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for that Rory. I'd never have believed that was August. Why exactly did you decide to go around. To my untrained eye, it looked as if you could have landed safely from the position you were in.What do you think could of been the worst case scenario had you not thrown it away?
@RoryOnAir
@RoryOnAir 4 жыл бұрын
Ian Livsey Hi Ian, I’m pretty sure it would have been fine but it’s never worth taking the risk when a go around is always an option. I think I was a bit flat and definitely a bit too fast. I probably wouldn’t have touched down until half way along the runway - possibly more and that would have forced me to use the breaks more than I would have liked. It’s good to practice a go around anyway.
@musoseven8218
@musoseven8218 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell on here (sat in an armchair), but it looked flat and a tad fast to me. Another way around it, if quiet in the circuit/at the strip, bush pilot/off airport stylee, is to call a "xyz traffic, Eurostar G-ABCD, for a low level pass in preparation for a landing". And do a low level pass to assess the strip for debris, livestock, farm equipment etc. My dad used to do that at certain short farm strips, to get the lie of the land and thus stay safe.
@RoryOnAir
@RoryOnAir 4 жыл бұрын
Muso Seven yeah that’s a great shout. To be honest that’s kind of what I ended up doing because I wanted to have a look at the surface up close and thought I may as well use that first attempt to do that once I decided to go around. It was flat because of the 500 foot circuits and I hadn’t adjusted my circuit size from what I’d fly a 1000 foot circuit at and I was carrying more speed incase of wind shear, but was still too fast.
@musoseven8218
@musoseven8218 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rory, you made a good call. There's a fairly local airfield hereabouts (Oxfordshire) with, iirc 600' circuit height plus a noise abatement circuit and on one runway a landing over the hangers/reporting point onto a rough grass strip. Focuses the mind, the picture looks very different than when the circuit height is 1000' at the home airfield. All good fun though, even with sweaty palms.
