Then, they FINALLY arrive at the Nederlands Openlucht Museum, to enjoy the carefully preserved history of the Netherlands while drinking a park-made "lekker biertje" or two.

The blacksmith's workshop used to be a part of my uncle's auto garage. His companion's grandfather owned the workshop and the family later extended it with the garage. I remember it was always packed with old bicycles when I was growing up. When it was moved to the Openluchtmuseum they literally tore it down brick by brick (and numbered them).

Trip to Enkhuizen and the Zuiderzeemuseum (Museumkaart applicable). Especially in summer Enkhuizen is such a beautiful and lively town with a lot of boats and terraces around the town. And combine it with a boat ride to Medemblik and the museum tram to Hoorn, also with the Museumkaart 😊.

+1 for the Zuiderzee museum and the city of Enkhuizen. It was a big (for Dutch standards) and wealthy city in the 17th century , and it has a replica city hall of the one on Dam square in Amsterdam (now a Royal Palace). When done in Medemblik and after taken the museum tram to Hoorn you can take the ferry to Stavoren (the BEP GLASIUS), and visit the harbour with the statue of the vrouwe van Stavoren and take a pint in one of the most scenic bars of Friesland with a lot of wand filling paintings (it used to be called cafe Max, I believe it is now called de Schans)

Have you already been to Burgers Zoo? It's next to the openluchtmuseum in Arnhem. Next to normal open air zoo it also has several 'indoor' area's a bit like the big glasshouses you see in botanical gardens. The indoor areas are a tropical rainforest, a mangrove and a desert. And there is a big coral reef aquarium. It's great!

The butterflies and manatees at the Burgers Zoo are amazing, but we saw some enclosures for the elephants, chimps and gorillas that were very sad. And the mental wellbeing of those animals didn't seem good either. I've never seen (in the flesh) such a pissed-off elephant as I did in Arnhem. Much better to go to Apenheul in Apeldoorn next time you're in Gelderland. The monkeys run free and will even come sit on your shoulder. And the bonobos are in wonderful enclosures and seem super happy and playful.

My wife and I been there last weekend. We’ve noticed that the museum is too big to see everything in one day. And that is fine to us, because 1. We have a museumkaart, 2. In about 2 years we will move to Arnhem. (We are going to live in a newly build apartment block with people of different ages, a so-called co-housing project) We like Arnhem very much. There so much to see and to experience. Unlike the rest of flat (Holland) Nederland it has hills. But also the river Rhine. Very nice restaurants. And a refreshing cultural life; due to the Conservatory (Jazz and Pop) and Art Academy combined both with the Dance Academy.

Thanks for posting another great video! If you like historical theme parks you can try for a next time the Archeon in Alphen a/d Rijn where they have different zones with each a dedicated time period. Alphen has been a Roman settlement and for sure that period has not been forgotten 🙂 When I was there the last time ( I lived for some years in Alphen ) they did an reenactment of a gladiator fight. The losing guy got his head smashed in with a big hammer. I love the glorious old times ! 😛

Arnhem is a good choice! The only Dutch city with electric buses ('trolleybussen'). As said earlier, the Zoo next door to the Openluchtmuseum is also worth visiting. If you like stoofvlees, then you should check out Maastricht's (or better: Limburgs) 'zoervleis' and 'rommedoe mèt sjroep'. The latter requires an acquired taste...

Burgers Zoo is def recommended to visit in Arnhem. Also: Loesje, a more satire approach to every day life in 1/2 sentences on bins, bill boards and what not is founded in Arnhem. However go to Giethoorn - in between Friesland en Overijssel. Prepare yourself for some fierce groups of tourist from Asia and Germans but if you like little canals, bridges and take your own boat / canoe out on the water it is lovely on days like you visited the open air museum. They even got museum de oude aarde - with all kind of stones / gems. But people love it for the scenery most of all.

I went there in 1996 and it looks like they've continued to expand since then. I had a great time on a sunny, chilly October day. My favorite was climbing up into one of the windmills--I can't believe how steep the climb was! I had some quite yummy pannekoeken there, but don't remember drinking the beer. Fun fact: My wife's grandfather was a steam engine engineer and worked on many of the steam engine exhibits at the Openlucht museum. They used his extensive knowledge to get a lot of them working when they were installed there. It is such a great museum to visit! For anyone who has an interest in Dutch history, it is a must see. My personal favorite bits were the windmill and hand cranked pumps we used in the 16th and 17th century to dry mill our first polders. My kids could not believe that is what we invented and used to keep our feet dry back in those days 😀

Oh dear and you didn't visit Burgers Zoo! You definitely gave to. It is amazing! Puts all other zoos to shame. It has huge halls with an entire tropical forest, a complete desert and an ocean you can walk underneath, including all the appropriate animals and plants, and restaurants. It also has a big chimpanzee island a movie was made about and the same for gorilla's. The story about how the zoo survived the war is very interesting too, because Arnhem was heavily bombed and evacuated, after which followed the Starvation Winter when people had to eat flower bulbs to survive. I was born in Arnhem and my father's side of the family too. I lived near the foot of the bridge where the movie A bridge too far was filmed. Coincidentally I now live where my mother was from. Where the allied forces landed first. This was the "Market" part and Arnhem the "Garden" part of the Operation.

My old-uncle was part of the group who blew up bridges to keep the Germans from invading. He was part of the 'verzet', in hiding for 4 years and also burnt a lot of papers containing details about the Dutch people. He operated around Arnhem. The city doesn't have a pretty city center like that medieval cities we still have, but it does have the prettiest park and a lot of history.;-) Did you know that they filmed 'A bridge to far' about Market Garden in Deventer (70s), because that bridge was more similar to the old one in Arnhem.

The time I was there I was very young and it was probably a school trip and I was more busy keeping up with the rest than enjoying everything. So the memory isn't that pleasant. Being on the spectrum, trying to keep up with neurotypicals is often way out of my comfort zone. But I should go back there some time and actually take my time. Some years ago I was at a similar museum in South Wales. That was fantastic! Some of the buildings in there have been used on series like Doctor Who.

The recipe for Arnhemse Meisjes actually is known! In the seventies Roald Dahl (the famous writer) visited Arnhem and got a taste for Arnhemse Meisjes. He asked the baker for the (secret) recipe. The baker got soft on him and thought, well, a foreigner that wanted to make his own cookies... what harm is there. Not knowing who he was, the baker gave him the recipe. Roald Dahl once made a recipe book where he included..... the recipe of Arnhemse Meisjes! Sadly I don't own the book anymore, but it actually is in there.

I can't lie that I am a bit disappointed y'all didn't use a short clip from 'A bridge too far' when talking about the John Frost bridge. Operation Market Gardes was a pretty big (and dividing) event in The Netherlands. While the south (everything south of the 'big rivers (maas/muse and rhine) was liberated the north headed for the 'honger winter' aka hunger winter. My late grandmother had recollections of breaking up tram tracks in The Hague for fuel and going out into the countryside to collect flowerbulbs to eat in order to survive. For those interested in the war side of things (or just want to watch 'cool stuff') I'd recommend the earlier mentioned 'A Bridge Too far' or episodes 4 and 5 of Band of Brothers.

Next time try a fresh krentenbol. That's one of their best! In the earlier days of this museum these were the only ones which were freshly baked in a original wood oven. And you could smell it from far away.

Next time you guys got to come to Burgers' Zoo, in my opinion Netherlands most beautiful zoo because of their big indoor weather controlled areas. There is a desert area, Jungle, Biggest Mangrove (in the world), Biggest indoor (Ocean) Coral reef in Europe. And lots of other stuff to see!

Hi guys, lot's and lot's more for you to discover. Hidden gem: Hotel Molendal, just across Park Sonsbeek. Jugendstil, in Summer time you can have a picknick, amongst the grazing cows. Not kidding! Water Museum just a few steps away. Live music every Sunday at the park. I could go on for hours and hours. Please feel free to ask for more secret info.... Modekwartier Klarendal, beautiful open air swimming pool surrounded by great nature: Zwembad Klarenbeek, Dudok: the best apple pie there is, Focus Filmtheater, Rozet: award winning building, and tons of restaurants serving lekkere cheesecake (Sugar Hill). Seriously: you could spend a whole week/weekend in Arnhem (combining Posbank: heather in bloom during the month of September, Hoogte 80 Festival in May, several music festivals, famous Spijkers&Spijkers (twins, fashion designers), enzovoorts, enzovoorts. Rijnkade: deck chairs, enjoying the sun, sipping cocktails, 2 Food Halls. Need I say more? I could, if you could spare the time..... See you soon! Ellen

Bedankt!

Hey you guys! Since you are such foodies.. Have you ever seen Anthony Bourdain in Amsterdam? Or Bizarre Foods episode Amsterdam (The Netherlands)?
@buncharted

it’s a shame that bourdain never did a proper video in amsterdam or the netherlands :( he only did an episode of his show “the layover” which wasn’t as good 😢 i’ll look up that episode of bizarre foods though! i’ve never watched it before :)

@@buncharted I agree on the Bourdain one. Bit sluggish and uninspiring. Booze Traveler has a Netherlands episode that is quite nice. And the Bizarre Foods one is not too bad either.

Yay, that’s really worthwhile. Perhaps a suggestion for May 4, Dodenherdenking. Over 10,000US soldiers are buried there. And each and every grave is adopted by the locals. It’s massive and impressive.
