In the Dutch speaking part of Belgium, We've got something we call "vogelnest" (bird's best) which is basically made in the same idea. Is a hard boiled egg covered in minced meat. But it's eaten as best in a full dish, but like a finger food snack.

There's a place in Groningen called "koning" which won the best eierbal in the Netherlands several years in a row. You guys kind of missed out by not going there

Oh cool I've never tried this dutch version. My favorite country that has this was the Philippines even better than the Indonesian one wich is weird cause foods not that great in the Philippines

Very similar to the 'Scotch' egg. Weirdly invented in London despite the name.

This one was invented here post war (ww2) by a family member of my neighbour. As far as I know he did not get inspired by the Scotch egg, so they are similar things created seperately. It was more a case of trying to create something new and exciting with the stuff at hand post war. The Scotch egg is meatloaf? ...instead of this ragout that we use in the Groninger Eierbal as well as the kroket. (Albeit a different ragout is used per dish)

@@lewisblackwiththenicehaireven Groningers historians haven't been able to find out where the eierbal actually came from. It's therefore highly unlikely this story to be true. The eierbal is over a 100 years old, many stories have been came up with in that time. And probably this one from that particular family too.

Gast… de eierbal machine is nog niet eens in gebruik.. elk balletje wordt nog steeds met de hand gemaakt. daarbij Groningen was eerder met de Eierbal, met je “friet ei”. De echte Eierbal is tevens gemaakt met kerrie ragout denk niet dat jullie “frietei” dat heeft.

Your neighbor told you that or is it actually true? Because it's not clear how the eierballen came to be. It is most likely just a version of the Scottish egg, but no one knows for sure if that's how it came to be.

@@Ramon314 It is actually true that both my neighbour told me and that he is family of the people who invented the eierbal. It was invented just after WW2 in Cafeteria Koning back then in the Witte Lattensteeg in the suburb Oosterpoort of the city Groningen.

Ok so this is NOT MEANT to be eaten while sober. It’s horrible. When you are drunk after schuren at de drie gezusters it tastes like a piece of amazing heaven and you want nothing more than to wrap yourself in an eierbal until mankind ends. Again, official instructions: only eat while drunk
