I always viewed his ability No Longer Human as a subconscious protection on him even if he doesn't want it. A reflection of his failed suicide attempts, they got "cancelled" or nullified. Similar to how, if any ability would kill him, it gets nullified.
@phrinus Жыл бұрын
Hm, to me, it always feels like he's trapped between life and death. It's a state, where he's neither dead nor really alive (enjoying life to the fullest, fully participating in it), but a shell of a human being, hence, No Longer Human.
@phrinus Жыл бұрын
Though, I do think it's more of a metaphor rather than a literal manifestation of his ability.

I also thought that No Longer Human turns Dazai's target back to their human state, but he loses his humanity.

Well the actual ability is kinda subconscious but he also uses it on command. (SPOILERS)In the cannibalism Arc Yosano couldn't heal Dazai because his ability kept nullifying her ability to heal.

The literal translation of 'No Longer Human' is actually 'Disqualified as a Human Being', so I figured it was sort of like disqualifying- or cancelling- other abilities. (I know it's a bit of a stretch lol)

I hate how underrated this series is. Not only has it changed me as a person, but it just makes me so very happy. My favorite thing this show does is make its characters genuinely horrifying in a way that doesn't feel cheap. Cough, Ace vs Fyodor, cough. I love the mind battles that happen between the characters who are smart in this show, and I love how we don't just get told that these characters are smart, we see that they are. I also enjoy the characters for not being afraid to be awful, I'm glad BSD doesn't pull the "Dazai's a main character? He's gotta be perfect, can do no wrong". No, he's done a lot of wrong, everyone in this show is a little screwed up, and it's so refreshing.

Yes and no. They have to be close to death/ freshly dead. Spoilers ahead of ur not fought up to season 4. She was able to kill the agency then heal them after one minute.

@@BlkMiku No, I watched that scene. If someone is dead she cannot heal them. She didn’t kill them, she said that “the human body can stay alive for up to two minutes after the heart stops. And in her backstory episode she tried to heal someone but they were already dead so her ability didn’t work.

asagiri puts so much love into his characters, you can see how much he adores the works of these authors.. he sees the good things and the bad things about them and creates amazing characters that are so vastly different than what we are used to in anime, because their ideals and philosophies were once, a real humans ideals and philosophies. asagiri has so much fun creating these stories and it really shows, being able to create a whole series criticizing old literature and being able to communicate the messages that these books want to tell us just by making a person out of them, and sharing this series with thousands of people, it's obvious he's having a blast doing it, and i think that's one of the reasons loving all these characters is so easy, because the author also loves them so much.

15:46 "i feel like new viewers who watch this show will come out being more appreciative of literature" This!! That is extremely true. Because of school and stereotypes i had on the classical literature of the 20th century moslty, i never was in it. Yet after bungou stray dogs, who also became one of my favorite show, i started buying books from the real authors of my favorite characters, like Dazai Osamu and "No longer human" which quickly actually became my favorite book i have ever read, making me read more books from him, but also Nakahara Chuuya, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and more... even just famous authors in the western side of the world like Edgar Allan Poe or Verlaine, i started to actively read it and come to love the books and appreciate them from what they were. And it might seem silly, but just a show relating past authors by the name of the abilities and characters truly changed my view on literature. (Aside from the show actually changing who i am as a person, strangly it helped me gain in maturity and i wouldn't be able to understand why.) Less related but i could also write a whole essay about how well mental health in bungou stray dogs is portayed especially in the manga and light novels. I have no words to describe how great Bungou is. It starts small and funny and has its own low pace, and sometimes you dont know why something is happening or where is the plot taking you, but in the longs run it is sooo worth it. As an anime viewer that became a Manga reader when I realized how long it had been since season 3 I was in shock when going through the story and realizing how dark ad brutal the recent chapters work. The plot of Bungou itself reminds me a lot of Dazai - It has this facade of humor and nonsense but had this deep hidden brutality and pain and poetry and philosofy in every quote and situation and character, specially if you read the novels. And the best thing is that its rare to find a character that is plain or cliche.

[i am a manga reader and I'm writing this throughout the video haha so prepare yourself for a long thing ;} ] I think someone already mentioned it but Yosano's ability isn't only on dead people, if a person has been dead for a minute it could heal them just like it can heal a seriously injured person. And actually, people with abilities have them since they are born, so Atsushi has his ability since his birth ;). And Kunikida can use his ability with any book, as long as it's empty ;) Also, inside season 1, there is the depiction of a light novel, more specifically the case of the blue terrorist (idk his name), but in the light novel, Atsushi is not there because normally, the name of the light novel is literally "Dazai's entrance exam". And for the whole plot of the abilities, they actually are inspired by the books written by authors such as Dazaï and no longer human, Chuuya and For the tainted sorrow and Francis with the Great Gatsby. I also want to say that it's not a world in white and black, it's not just a bit of gray, it's a world painted in all shades of gray, because no one is really good or really bad if you know what I mean? The video was great, i really enjoy it 💜

Also, before you start the manga, i think that reading the lights novels will be to your liking because they are important, let me list them for you ;) [there are some that I haven't read yet but that's not the reason haha] We have: Dazai's entrance exam Dark Era [with Odasaku| animated in early season two] The Untold Story Of Detective Agency [animated in early season four] 55 minutes (an investigation on the side of the OG story) Dead Apple (animated movie ;} ) We have Beast [an Alternative Universe where Dazaï is the PM Boss, Atsushi is the Port Mafia's White Reaper and Akutagawa is a new member of the ADA under Oda, who search for his sister] Fifteen [Animated in early season 3] Stormbringer [ It's actually Chuuya's backstory and damn, I have never cried so much as when I read this light novel] And we have Gaiden, which is the light novel where we see other people instead of PM/ADA members ;) like Ango, Ayatsuji etc... The changing atmospheres, the environment that influenced them specially, their psychologic state and views, intentions of the autors, animation influence, music. I would say the best review anyone ever made of BSD's. I agree, that season 2 is far better, but i guess the reason we are so fascinated with this season is the great introduction of every single character in season 1 as a (maybe sometimes boring) but very important base for the series. For me, Odas and Dazais Backstory is the Peak of Anime History. It touched my heart and left a huge scar, like maybe A silent voice.

I had a good time with the series up to that point, though beyond its characters, I can’t say that it really wowed me over those seasons. I did enjoy the second and third season more than the first, though I think it’s the context of the first few episodes of each season that really distinguished them (as well as a couple of others). It was that context that kept me going, a sense that these characters were still developing and we were still not at their best. Season 4 blew me away. It’s still among my favorites from this year and it’s a stacked year for anime. Can hardly wait for S5 to air this summer. I appreciate the additional context, and I’ll be looking for more literary references going forward.

@yutqoi Жыл бұрын
Thank you for putting sm thought and research into this video! As someone who loves bsd with my literal whole heart, it's really refreshing to see someone really carefully listen and put some thought into this series. I agree with a lot of your points you've made that I've seen very much overlooked even by big fans I will say though, the only thing I have to really say is your point about their abilities. Their abilities are way more inspired by their real author's works more than their character story. Like Atsushi is a weretiger only because his real life counterpart wrote a story about it. His tiger also having regenerative abilities, I assume it's like that just because his tiger is so powerful Other than that, I really love some of the things you've pointed out! Like how you really need to pay attention and really sit with the series to understand its message. And how it's such a slow start, but it all pays off in telling the character's and plot's story. And how no character is purely "good" or "bad" because every character has their own reasons and beliefs in thinking the things they believe is "correct". It's all gray and because of that, it's really hard to definitely call a character "evil". Bsd isn't an anime you can just sit down and expect some action. If you just want that, you might be disappointed because it has so much more to tell in its nuance The only real problem I have with it is the anime actually. I love the anime so much, but the original bsd manga and novel series do SUCH a better job in not only pacing, but understanding its characters. Often times with the anime, I find it overly-dramatizing its scenes and characters. It's especially clear with Dazai. In the manga, I feel he feels so much more human compared to the anime, which characterizes him to be much more "dark" and "mysterious". He is that, but there's so much more to his character than just that and I don't think Bones did the best job showing that. If you read the original age 15 novel the 1st part of season 3 adapted, you can see Dazai had so much more emotion and acted so much more like a teen than what the anime showed. And that makes sense because he literally is a teen LMAO. It's just kind of upsetting seeing him characterized so poorly in the anime Other than that, great video and thank you so much in taking your time to understand such an amazing series

haven't completed the vid yet, but i think they are born with their powers and the orphanage knew about his white tiger ability and they only abused him and not the other children there. so he doesn't lose control they abuse him without realizing that it will make it more likely to lose control and kill others =>

The environments they grew up in dont really have that much of an effect on their abilities. The “BEAST” manga, an official bungo stray dogs spin off, proves that. in BEAST atsushi is recruited into the port mafia and becomes dangerous and unhinged antagonist while akutagawa gets recruited into the detective agency and becomes kind hearted.

I have been watching this show for over a year now, and I love this series so much. I like the fandom where it is, not toxic, not huge, and yet so kind. (This is a little selfish on my part, but -) I hope it doesn’t get too popular. The fandoms ruin everything all the time. (MHA), And I don't want that to happen to bungo stray dogs :(

I am literally listing all the authors and their books i can find while reading bsd, its so interesting. Like i found out that naomi and tanizawa are indeed not siblings i dont know why they cosplay as siblings in bsd. Like tanizawa is the author and he wrote the book 'naomi' which is about tanizawa having a crush on naomi nd them turning into lovers 😭😭

So I want to point out for the comedic and slice of life moments, BONES does an amazing job of letting the viewer have a breather from the intensity of a story. I mean if you want all comedy and SOL, They animated Ouran High School Host Club lol 4:07 she doesn't kill them , the conditions are the patient needs to be near death, or on the brink/fatally wounded in order to heal them (though this is also expanded upon in her back story as to why this specific condition must be met and not just heal ppl as soon as possible). Also, as a female watcher/reader, the series captivated me with the very little sexualization of the female characters in the series. The men and women can recognize each other's abilities or lack there of, the gender is just secondary cause its who they are that matters most.

Heyo! I'm someone who is also fairly interested in researching the references between the fictional characters of Bungou Stray Dogs and real life. While I've only actually read No Longer Human (as I don't have the time to read full novels right now), I am collecting the books wherever possible, including titles by Ranpo, Edgar, Akutagawa, Atsushi, Fyodor, even the more obscure characters like Herman, H. G. Wells, and while I'm aware that they are not a BSD character, Franz Kafka (due to their name aiding Kafka Asagiris' pseudonym name). While there's already lots of information online, especially on the BSD Wiki, if you're ever wanting to create a video about the references I might be able to point out a few more that are rarely considered
