The novel/web novel go much more in depth. They talk about how Subaru couldn’t pass out due to the pain, and felt everything. They crawl under his skin (you can see if you look closely), eat his eyes and ears. By the end he couldn’t even hear. It was just pain. Him slamming his head into the floor felt like such relief such so he keep hitting it

I dunno if anyone has mentioned it yet, but theres no delay when subaru dies and revives, just a visual one for us. Meaning he was still feeling the rabbits eat him alive when he revived and it almost drove him insane on the spot. No one else has to go through an experience like that and REMEMBER it.

There Is a delay on specific deaths (they don’t show the scenes in the anime though from what I remember but basically his soul visits some afterlife thing for a second only happened 2 or 3 times in novels rn I think) but it’s not long enough to help his sanity

The "Eugene/yujin" confusion was partly just Subaru pretending not to understand, but he was also a little confused for two reasons: 1) as you mentioned, Subaru hasn't made many friends (in this world or his old one) and he didn't realize that Otto considered him to be one 2) Otto used the more formal word _yujin_ instead of the more common word _tomodachi_

Echidna being aware of Subaru's situation was foreshadowed during the first trial as well as the first time they met in XP land. She reconstructed his world through his memories, so she has full access to his memories, that's why she was able to make him forget the first time but why his memories came back when he was back in XP. She would know everything Subaru knows about Japan and the time looping. I love how many details are hidden in plain sight on a rewatch, it genuinely makes the show a lot of fun

Btw, the Great Rabbit death is worse in the webnovel. In short, it's very well detailed. The rabbits entered Subaru through his mouth and rectum and then met in the middle of the body and ate his organs, and Subaru only died when the rabbits reached his brain. For those who want to "enjoy" the full version, here it is: [Subaru: Why is there a rabbit here…… it.. is a rabbit.. right?] With endless questions, Subaru looked over his surroundings, confused, trying to see if there were other animals besides this rabbit that had wandered back into the Sanctuary. And, with no particular intention, he reached out his hand towards the rabbit, hoping to confirm what it was, or perhaps just wanting to pet its fur―― [Subaru: ――――] The next moment, Subaru’s entire left hand was detached from his wrist upwards. Blood sprayed out from the ragged, sloppy wound, and green-blue veins dangled from the stump. Were the thin, white strings tendons or nerves? Either way, it’s always something grotesque when human body parts are destroyed―― and those, were his few seconds of escape from reality. Pain of an entirely other dimension trashed at Subaru’s brain, and, suffocating from the agony, his body collapsed to the ground. Bubbling blood spilled from the corner of his lips, and he writhed like a fish on land. The fact that his ears could still hear, must be both a miracle and a joke by a cruel God. Like the rustle of lapping waves, the sound captured Subaru’s eardrums. Little hops. Small, tiny bodies. The chain of overlapping chirps expanded to enormity, and even if his vision were still present, he had no desire to count them. His tongue was torn to shreds, sharp teeth flashed across the depths of his throat, ravaging everything from his esophagus to his stomach. Inside, they collided with the others that had invaded from his rectum, and, as if descending into a competition, they devoured his organs left and right, turning Natsuki Subaru into minced feed. It was the unmistakable sensation of being alive while living creatures shredded him from within. Fear had already left him. There was barely any more pain. He couldn’t understand why he was still conscious. He was being eaten. He was being eaten. His left eye was gouged out. His ears were no longer there. His organs had already been consumed, and now the skin of his face was being peeled off. A hole opened in his skull, and teeth sank into his exposed, bulging brain――

FUN FACT: Napoleon was actually defeated by an army of rabbits. He was planning to go hare hunting with his men and ordered 3000 wild hare. But his men made a mistake. They got domesticated rabbits. And because they wasn't wild hare they wasn't scared of humans. The rabbits thought that he was going to feed the 3000 of them so they climbed over them and bite him and his men. It got so bad that he and his men had to escape. I wonder if the creator took inspiration from that.😅

i get your issue with emilia honestly, the show knows it’s doing this! Emilia as a character, since season 1, has never really been in charge of any decision making. in the first season, she wasn’t there much because she was studying the politics of the nation, so she was super busy. Also since puck and subaru treated her like a damsel in distress in season 1, you really couldn’t see her do anything, even if she wanted to. Like i said before, the show knows this, emilia knows this! it’s why she says this “oh so i guess the talk on the matter is already over then…” in episode 24 (or 25 idk) of season 1 when the witch cultists were coming to attack the mansion, but everything was already decided before she even knew about it. literally no one is giving her the chance to do something. During the whole mabeast fiasco in the beginning of the anime, subaru told puck to tie emilia to a chair so she wouldn’t go save everyone, and puck did! the whole thing would’ve been waay easier with her there but because subaru (and by extension, puck) didn’t respect her autonomy and choice, he refused to involve her even if she wanted to help. you think she isn’t doing something when she’s there because she can’t, not because she doesn’t want to. her character is very tragic to me at least. no one gives her the time of day, no one takes her seriously, no one tells her the important stuff, and she knows this. she knows she’s not aware of important manners or taken seriously, she even calls roswaal weird in the beginning of the anime showing she doesn’t really trust him. she’s shunned by everyone outside of puck, who already isn’t a good parental figure for her. speaking of puck! i hate that cat so much 😭 he’s the one that allowed emilia to become like this, a person that needs to have someone to depend on otherwise she breaks. he’s the one that nurtured this behavior of hers and it really does make me mad. he also told her that the scars subaru has is directly because of her (in the memory snow ova), increasing the guilt she already feels when seeing subaru get hurt. puck needs to have a whole other comment, i like that he’s there for emilia, but the way he goes about it is so infuriating to see. anyways i’m really looking forward to you guys seeing her development as a character, it’s genuinely one of my favorite developments to see!

The nature of Witches in Re: Zero isn't as simple as "good or bad". They're ruled by their nature, by the sin they represent. Greed has good and bad sides to it, but mostly it's just inhuman. A Witch isn't bound my morals or ethics and while they have some control over the level they are driven by their natures, they'll always behave in a way a normal person wouldn't. This is one of the reasons people fear them. They're hard to understand and predict. They'll commit atrocities in pursuit of their desires one moment and grant boons to the world in that same pursuit the next. For example, those rabbits were created by the Witch of Gluttony to provide and endless food source to the world, but they're also gluttony itself and harbor unquenchable hunger to the point where they devour everything around them, including each other. In an ideal world, a powerful mage would devise a way to contain and control them and provide endless food to the entire world.

while i do like emilia a lot, i get where ur coming from a bit. there is somewhat of a reason but its not a very good narrative reason. re zero is my fav anime but yea i really dont like how emilia had a backseat in the first 1 1/2 season even if theres an in universe reason for it. but after this it sort of makes up for it imo although even readers might disagree with that

The issue is that the anime adaption cuts out a LOT of content. Re zero is still at its best when it’s a novel. While as an anime, there’s still a lot of stuff that is cut if it isn’t immediately plot relevant. So there’s less Otto, there’s less Emilia, and there’s less of Rem’s worst moments. And yeah, I do think Emilia gets better. She’s a slow burn character.
