Ok so before you read my opinion, keep in mind I'm a teenager, and I read this book only once, two months ago. And there are spoilers, so... I personally really liked this book, mostly bc of Ava(I fell in love with her lol). I kinda related to Sam, because, at least to me, it seems like she is very lonely. She doesn't have a mom, her dad is away, she doesn't have friends and she's struggling with becoming an adult, writing and being herself(or knowing who she is). She needs someone to help her but she can't find anyone. The Lion(forgot his actual name) "abandoned" her when she was vulnerable(i think she told him about how she felt in general, but I really can't remember what she said to him when she was drunk) so maybe she thought she couldn't trust anyone and if she was vulnerable and honest with someone, they'd leave. So, to help herself, she created Ava. You can see how Ava kept her company, helped her(especially after the bunnies), cared for her. Since she wasn't real, it was Samantha's way to care for herself. She needed someone but no one was there for her, so she made up someone. And I think this is kinda like how she made Max, just a different way, because when she lived with Ava, she started writing again, writing about Ava(like you said, the art is an extension of the artist or something like that). And since from the beginning of the book, I KNEW Sam was in love with Ava(maybe is just my gay ass lol). But then I got my "confirmations" after reading the whole book. At first, I thought she had made Max inspired by Ava. But then I realized that Max was just a Male version(and a little different, like more mysterious maybe) of herself. And Max dated Ava. To me, she started being jealous of him because she wanted her. I kinda got lost in my points rn, don't know where I was going with this. but my last point here about Samantha and Ava's relationship is that, you know how you can tell when you're not doing great? Like, when you realize you spent your whole day in bed watching Netflix and didn't take care of yourself? I feel like that's what happened to Samantha when she finally realized she was getting lost in the bunnies, loosing herself. Ava was her way to cope and care for herself. It was like Samantha realized, deep down, that things were getting bad and she needed to get out of the bunnies, so she made Ava come to rescue her. When, really, she did it on her own. She saved herself. (I just noticed that I used a lot "herself" and parenthesis, sorry ;P ) But other things I'd like to point out that I just thought were interesting: I'm pretty sure all those braids in Samantha's hair were a kind of knot magic, and maybe that's how the bunnies kept Samantha so under their control and "crazy". And the way she changed so easily depending on who she was with, I relate to that too because I think she just didn't know who she really was. You know, going to college, becoming an adult, it's probably essential that you know yourself. And she was so lost. She just "became so many different people"(personalities) so easily because she hadn't set a personality for herself, and sometimes you get lost in other people's opinions of you without a sense of identity, so you become what they think of you. I'm not getting into the other points like poverty and these kind of comments because, to me, the most interesting and relatable parts were the ones I talked about. Sorry if this comment was so long and messy, I just have a lot of opinions about this book and desperately wanted to share them lmao. Also, english isn't my first language so there might be some spelling errors. thx for reading.

Yes to almost all of what you said, but isn't Samantha supposed to be a 25 year old woman? Not some 18 year old who is "just becoming an adult". That makes a huge difference for me.

I was confused by the end because the author mixed up two types of endings. Either it should have been a supernatural book where Max really is someone Sam creates and then he turns into a stag and runs away (and kicks them all enough to break their limbs and ribs) OR it could ALL have been inside Sam's head (Ava included). The fact that it was both (maybe, idk how the bunnies made boys) made it doubly confusing. Wtf was real then?! Nothing?
@miquesbookvlogs3724 жыл бұрын
Sawri M I hear ya! I would argue that since this entire book takes places from Sam’s POV, the entire story is subjective to her. As such, the interpretation that all of this has happened in her head is one I’m leaning toward. She clearly deals with trauma by conjuring up fantastical scenarios to cope with her anxieties in life. Or, yes, perhaps this could be surrealist-either way, I suppose only Mona Awad can know. Thanks for watching, by the way! ☺️

I consumed this book all in one day. And I’m conflicted. I thought it was really good in the beginning. Funny, fresh, and ominous. But after the beginning of the second half I just was lost. Lots of characters were insignificant like the Scottish dude. What confused me even more was that this “clique” was definitely a cult, right? And Eleanor was the leader. I wish Mona played more into that dynamic. Who is Eleanor, really? Why does she want to summon these hybrid creatures? Why does she have this need for control? I was half expecting her to be some kind of supernatural entity in a human body. But no. This book left me feeling confused and underwhelmed by the end.

Okay I’m still watching your review but as someone who just finished the book and immediately looked up theories because I was so confused, I found a theory that makes the most sense to me. Who knows if it is right but it’s interesting. We know that Ava, Jonah and Max were created by Samantha as a way to deal with being lonely. I think the bunnies were real but I don’t think they were trying to literally make bunny boy hybrids. I think the whole thing was literally a writing workshop and they were using her for her creative imagination. However, I think they got more than they bargained for. So I think these bunny/boy hybrids were literally just writing drafts and with the issues that Samantha had, she imagined that they were real men like she did with Ava, Jonah and Max. Which would explain why they were referenced to as “Darlings” because that’s a term used in creative writing. To either kill your characters or to change the plot of your story.
@Charlotte-br1cs2 жыл бұрын
Wait I did not think Jonah was fake. I thought he was like the one real, non-ambiguous character, who would come in to remind Samantha and the readers like hey we're on planet earth. Kinda a voice of reason. Like the janitor. Now im more confused.
@Charlotte-br1cs2 жыл бұрын
Ok wait I just looked back on the last pages and I realize you're probably right about Jonah being fake as she says "the mud" answers her back. But then I noticed on the second to last page, Jonah waves at a group of men, kind of parallel to how Samantha waved to the bunnies in that first scene, and says the men do everything "in eerie tandem." This made me wonder if Jonah is basically a male parallel of Samantha, and there is a male version of the bunnies?
@dankacademia18652 жыл бұрын
@@Charlotte-br1cs male version of the bunnies?? That sounds so cool. Yeah honestly I couldn't tell whether Samantha was seriously talking to the mud or Jonah in the end lmao

I just finished the book. I'm like, mind blown. I feel like there were so many points where I felt so close to understanding what the author was trying to convey, and then I was just like, what the fuck? One thing I think was really interesting though was the graduation scene. Was the whole book, the story about the bunnies, Ava's writing project? Idk. But I thought it was interesting that at the graduation, the first real-world scene we get, the bunnies seem kind of pathetic? And Samantha seems normal. But I'm so confused because in the beginning Ava was real? And what was the accident with the bunnies?
@ShellyflowersReadsandWrites3 жыл бұрын
I gotta be honest. As someone who went to an MFA program, but book is actually really spot on. But I agree, if you take the plot as literal, it can be jumbled. I took it as a non reliable narrator processing the trauma that comes with being a “creative academic”.

I was confused ( as most people were ) the whole book which made me want to just keep reading to figure out what was truly going on, but when I finished it I was just so underwhelmed and still confused? Maybe I was confused cause I wasn’t paying as much attention cause it was getting repetitive and I was hanging on by a thread but idk. To begin, this book is phenomenal in some aspects. I’d give it 4 stars for the fact that I think Mona created a more intricate setting and background for Warren that I think everyone is overlooking. I’ve found some evidence in the narration that implies that the town Warren resides in is actually either influenced or contributing to the environment of the cult. Chapter 2 (page 10) While Samantha brings in her mail, there is mention about a “one- women play about the town being The Body and The Body being the town.” Later Jonah asks if Samantha is going to see it and they both confirm that they will not attend. I think it is also safe to assume that The Workshop Professors orchestrated bringing in Sam and Jonah to Warren on scholarship, because they both came from homes where one parent is deceased and they are from what might be considered lower- middle class families. Page 11 also summarizes that Jonah is actually receiving the same treatment as Sam in regards to how his cohort is a treating him as an outcast as well, “I’ve seen Jonah trailing behind his cohort on the street, sitting in the far corner in workshop…” On page 304 during graduation, Jonah is seen sitting away from coincidentally, “Four men with varying degrees of facial hair who seem to do everything, even blink, in eerie tandem.” As we learn, Samantha is an unreliable narrator so I had to dissect the four separate rituals that happen throughout the book to try and make sense of it all which is why I find this book really fascinating in its complexity. What we know is real (kind of) is that the Bunnies are in a cult and study witchcraft through KareKare. I think it is implied that like the girls create their own stories and worlds with writing- they in turn use dark arts to create hybrids. Samantha in turn really does create Max and because her imagination is considerably more vivid and because she was thinking about Ava - she summoned a version of herself. Where I find Mona Awad’s genius is that the point of the Bunnies is that they were using the rituals as a way to progress feminism, (page 107, “So do you really want to be a passenger in someone else’s narrative? ”… “You want to fuck, not be fucked,” Victoria says.) Ironically when Samantha creates Max (slightly implied has sex with the bunnies) it is their undoing. Lastly I think the animal imagery presented throughout the book is Awad’s way of weaving in the spectrum of sexuality. The reason I am taking off a star is because of finding out that Ava was never real. The only way I can make sense of the ending where Max is holding the dead swan is that Sam has mentioned Ava/ the swan to the Bunnies in workshop/ her stories. After the Lion and Karekare and the bunnies tie Samantha and explain they are going leave her a surprise (chapter 35). Sam wakes up to find Max holding “Ava” dead. Page 289- Max leads Ava to the Duchess’ house to kill them and once they arrive Sam sees that the bunnies have finished another ritual. Wearing black mesh where Ava has only been described to wear. I feel that the Bunnies have initiated a ritual to manifest Ava into a Swan so they can physically kill her (or something to that degree.) Now. I have way too many questions about this book that I cannot give the rating I would like. What is real and what is not? What is the Lions purpose? On page 274, the Lion/ Alan is described to be wearing gloves from deformed hands and ripped lips, why has he turned into a hybrid? Why have there been so many mentions of decapitators? There is some mention of the Bunnies taking the hybrids into the woods to dispose of them, some finding their way back into town and picking up part-time jobs “under the table, obviously.” Is that more evidence to say the town is in on it? Why are there multiple mentions of changing eye color between some of the characters? Bunny - Mona Awad To begin, this book is phenomenal in some aspects. Thanks for your review. I was interested in the book at first, because I was anticipating answers and reveals to all the weird things. Unfortunately, nothing made sense. Some see that that is what makes the book interesting but I strongly disagree. The book is confusing and lacks answers to EVERYTHING. Why did the Bunnies talk that way? Why were they inseparable? HOW did they create darlings? The lack of depth or simple detail on the creation of darlings made it seem like a children’s book. Why were Samantha’s darlings more realistic and how was she able to conjure them without knowing about the process? I dont know, nothing makes sense.

Hello, just discovered your channel and loved the review (I just finished the book in the morning today). I totally agree with your review - this book was fascinating and frustrating in equal measures. I also think that the format of the book itself deliberately followed what the story was talking about? As in, the story kinda gets lost into this haze just like the protagonist does, and then the two Bunny-professors talk about how loathsome books with spineless heroines are, and then our heroine kind of grows a spine and exacts revenge on the four mean girls, and kind of brings the plot back on track. So, like, that whole bunny-professors kidnapping weirdness was very meta. I think. I dunno. 🤣🤣🤣

Personally I found this book to be very refreshing although **spoiler** I guessed, that Ava wasn't real right at the beginning. For me personally the horror and abnormal aspects were what made it appealing to me in the first place and I wished she had elaborated on them more. This Hybrid:) of loneliness and horror worked out really well for me. I am unsure if I liked the way the bunnies were essentially left a mistery or not. I agree with you on the fact that the second half did feel sort of disconnected to the second one which made it kind of frustrating for the readers.
