Bunzl Canada | SickKids proving MRgFUS safe in treatment of brain tumours

Dr. James Rutka, renowned pediatric neurosurgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, discusses groundbreaking research and treatment for DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), one of the most challenging and deadly pediatric brain cancers.
Dr. Rutka explains the innovative use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) to open the blood-brain barrier, allowing effective delivery of large drug molecules directly to the tumour site. He shares insights into the safety and feasibility of this technique, which has shown promising results in the first stage of a clinical trial led by his team at SickKids.
As of June 2024, four children with DIPG were admitted to the study to receive this pioneering therapy. Dr. Rutka provides a promising update on their recoveries and the potential for immune-based therapies to combat this devastating disease.
