They can not speak of what they know. They can never tell what they have done. But actions will always speak louder than words. If a deathwatch veteran kills, say, a Necron Lord in a different way than standard procedures, others will notice and try to mimic the results. If the veteran shows that a war hammer will do more damage to a Xenos than a power sword, then the squad will make the connection and retrain in the new weapon to combat the same, Xenos. DeathWatch veterans don't have to say anything. They can simply show their chapter what they have learned in combat.

The inquisition is not immune to politics and factionalism. There are plenty of stories where inquisitors push too hard on their 'authority' and find themselves without any allies. Depends on the Chapter. Some like the Ultramarines see it as an honour to have a brother called to the Deathwatch, and laud his return to their ranks as it will aid the Chapter in the future (a skilled warrior to lead a squad, teach the Chapter anything he learned in the Deathwatch etc.). Other Chapters see it as penance for great wrongs and expect the battle-brother never to return, to give his life in service to the Imperium and repent of his sins, he has a chance to die honourably, and it saves him being killed by the Chapter command which might get messy if he's well liked, it could cause a potential Chapter civil war.

A very good point. If there were an oathbreaker amongst the Ultramarines or the Blood Angels, and their reasons were suitably just in the eyes of their brothers and leadership, I think the Inquisition would throw the biggest hissy fit imaginable, because they would be utterly helpless to do anything about it. Guilliman already harbors a great deal of disdain and disgust for the current state of affairs, let alone the Inquisition. And if they wanted to try acting tough against either the Lord Commander's legion, or against the Lord Regent's chapter, they would very quickly find a power armored boot in their backside.

I think it's mostly because the Inquisition is always plotting, several different factions within it fighting each other for power or who-knows-what. On top of that Deathwatch missions might not simply be killing Xenos but maybe retrieving Xenos artifacts. Should any of the details be known to anyone outside it could compromise the Inquisitor's or their faction's plans. Best example is the Shadowbreaker novel, should any of what happened there leak to the outside it would turn into an absolute mess for the Inquisition.

Firstly- their experiences Are shared *without context* if needed for mission critical circumstances- Ex. I have this knowledge of the enemy (and others can infer How they come by the knowledge). It’s certainly part of what the chapters get out of the whole deal - Tactical Xenos training. The part that comes along with said deal is their oath and secrecy- which could very well affect On-going Inquisition missions etc. so their oaths are entirely necessary.
@urapooper3624 жыл бұрын
I think the black tape over there experience helps hold the bond in a killteam since as a group you would have to be open with your team to work really well together to the highest of their ability using ALL of their abilities. Some chapter secrets might be revealed because of this but because of the oath it is still kept secret and the member can use it as an advantage on missions. I can't believe that some people are so closed minded that dont even think for a sec why they do something not just assume its because of the inquisition getting high on their own ego.

The simple truth is that human, eldar, Astartes, inquisitor, even Primarch are vulnerable to chaos. Secrecy is paramount. I remember talking to a friend who became an astronomer. His team was searching for planets in other solar systems that could support life, but when looking for something this (relatively) small, other objects can get in the way. One such object was an asteroid. It was knocked out of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and initially appeared as if it could reach Earth’s orbit and could be a near miss. It turned out that us was no threat, but when it first was discovered, a government team came to investigate it. They told him if there was such an asteroid found, they’d have to keep it to themselves or face “legal trouble”. The government would simply lie about it, because if people thought a world-ending asteroid impact was coming, society would disintegrate instantly. Raping, murdering, stealing, it would be impossible to control it. That’s how the Inquisition views Chaos, Xenos, etc. People cannot know what’s out there, not even the Inquisitors.

‘The Deathwatch are a team, inquisitor. Our individual differences make the whole stronger.’ - Watch Captain Quirion Octavius seconded from the Imperial Fists Chapter ‘How does it feel to be back?’ asked Ragnar, gesturing towards one of two stone benches. ‘Strange?’ 'Ingvar sat on the nearest bench, feeling exposed without his armour. Even with dausvjer sheathed at his side, his grey shift and fur-lined cloak felt like flimsy protection against the Fang’s permanent chill. ‘Somewhat,’ he replied. Ragnar sat opposite. His movements were easy and unencumbered. The machine-grind of his suit’s systems was barely audible. Something about him radiated confidence, ebullience, vigour. The Young King had none of the grizzled majesty of Grimnar, nor the raw elemental potency of Stormcaller, but now that Ingvar had witnessed him in the flesh he finally began to understand why he had been elevated so far and so quickly. ‘I am curious,’ Ragnar said. ‘I served away from Fenris myself. What can you tell me?’ Ingvar didn’t meet the Jarl’s gaze. ‘Little, I am afraid,’ he said. ‘Forgive me, lord, but…’ ‘…the Inquisition would have your lungs on a salver,’ said Ragnar. ‘And then mine. Very well, then - keep your secrets. But be aware: others will press you harder.’ Ingvar’s eyes flickered out of focus, their gaze uncertain. ‘I believed I could come back. I truly believed it. I wear them both now - my two lives, intertwined, interdependent. I thought I could keep them in balance.’ He looked around him then, as if suddenly nervous others might be listening. The apothecarion gazed back at him, deserted, echoing with antiseptic emptiness. Baldr’s blank expression registered no change. Ingvar lowered his head further, keeping his voice to little more than a hiss. ‘I have to tell someone,’ he said. ‘If we are both to die here, far from the ice and unmourned, I have to tell someone. You will not remember. No vow is broken.’ Baldr’s face was unmoved, locked in the rigid grip of paralysis. His sickly features seemed carved from granite. Ingvar paused, poised over what felt like a precipice. Heartbeats passed; his own strongly, Baldr’s almost undetectably. ‘I no longer believe, brother.’ Ingvar’s voice almost broke as he spoke those words. His hands gripped the side of the table. Horror filled his heart, horror that he had spoken such a thing out loud. Until then he had never done so, not even in the privacy of his cell’s solitude. The psycho-conditioning of the Adeptus Astartes was so ferociously strong. But not unbreakable. ‘I no longer believe,’ he said again, more firmly. It was less terrible the second time. Like unlocking a door into a hidden chamber of forbidden secrets, more thoughts spilled out, tumbling after the first one. He had broken the taboo; the totem had been cracked. After that, anything was possible. ‘We were seven,’ he said, no longer staring at Baldr’s static features but seeing things far away. ‘Just like Járnhamar, we were seven. Callimachus of the Ultramarines, Leonides of the Blood Angels, Jocelyn of the Dark Angels, Prion of the Angels Puissant, Xatasch of the Iron Shades, Vhorr of the Executioners, Ingvar of the Space Wolves. We were Onyx Squad.’ Ingvar smiled softly. ‘We did not call ourselves that. Halliafiore gave us the name. He gave us our missions. He gave us plenty.’ As he spoke he heard the faint noises of the apothecarion machinery working around them - the hum of rebreathers, the drip of saline valves, the slow click of medicae-cogitators. The chamber itself seemed to be listening to him. ‘For a while I held on to the past. I kept to the old ways, I walked the path of the ice. I learned to doubt slowly. Callimachus was patient. I think he liked me, for all the pain I gave him. He believed I would see the virtue of the Codex if I could be shown how it worked. He was right about that, at least at first. It was painful to see myths unravelled. Do you remember when we used to laugh at other Chapters? Of course, we were different. Nothing so hard, so cold, as the soul forged on Fenris.’ Ingvar bowed his head lower. He stared at his own clenched fists. ‘To do what we do, we have to believe. We have to believe there is no alternative, that our destiny is sacred, set apart from the start. That is what we are told in every saga and forced to learn by every Priest.’ Ingvar reached up for the soul-ward again, clutching it tight and straining the chain around his neck. ‘But what if the myths are broken?’ He remembered Bajola’s contempt. Myths. ‘I have seen things, brother. I have seen star systems burning. I have heard the screaming of a billion souls. All of them, screaming. We couldn’t shut it out. I still hear them.’ Ingvar’s right hand started to shake. He let go of the soul-ward and clamped his gauntlet firmly against the steel. ‘There are weapons, Fjolnir, things you would not believe. There are devices so powerful that even to speak of them outside the Deathwatch is to earn execution. Only Callimachus could have been trusted to give the order to use them. He would have done his duty even if it meant tearing out the heart of his own primarch. Could I have done it? I do not know. But he did. He gave the order, and we used those things on our own kind, burning them into atoms so that the Great Devourer would not be able to feed on their corpses.’ The cogitators ticked gently. Baldr’s chest rose and fell. The rebreathers hummed. ‘Then we had to watch it come. The Shadow, so vast it might have been another star system in motion. We had to watch it move over us, blind to our presence, day after day, huddled away from its wrath, watching its living ships ply across the void, watching them crawl into the warm heart at the centre of the galaxy.’ Ingvar shuddered at the memory. ‘Endless,’ he whispered in horror. ‘Endless...’ - Ingvar Orm Everrson, aka Gyrfalkon[Blood of Asaheim - Chris Wraight

Those groups are: The Custodes, the first founding chapters with reasonable amounts of later foundings (UM, DA, BA, IF, IH, RG and WS), the black templars and most of the other 2nd founding chapters, the Mechanicum and last but not least every Space Marine Chapter which is a part of the unforgiven.

Considering how the inquisition operates, it makes sense that they would not want anyone to know how they deploy or scheme with their forces.

I should repaint my marines as deathwatch. Each squad continuing a mixture of different marines. Could still technically play them as a single army.
@tristomand4 жыл бұрын
Based on other stories and tidbits of lore. The secrecy of the Deathwatch when returned only covers the missions, not the tactics and general experience gained by the veteran. So a veteran is allowed to teach his brothers how to best destroy an alien or explain the aliens motivations and tactics, but the veteran is not allowed to tell them how other members of the deathwatch fell, against which foe or anything else about the specific missions.

They can't have their celebration while the inquisition is near. Gotta keep that cannibalism restrained.

I guess that the vision of a fleet entering the eye of terror gives us a good idea if what would be done to a chapter such as the Ultramarines. They most likely wouldn't be destroyed, but sent on a penitent crusade. Which, if it is into the eye, could be just as bad ^^

Honestly it makes you wonder how the Inquisition would know if a Brother broke his Oath like do they have psykers specifically dedicated to tracking ex-Deathwatch marines or something? Is it idk a voice recorder bug in their armour? They can't possibly know unless someone told them
@guldukat13544 жыл бұрын
one can't help but wonder how badly the resources of the imperium are mismanaged, if the inquistion has an army to bring down whole chapters of space marines what other departments of the imeprium have forgotten resources at there command that could be put to good use but are not, i bet you each of the high lords has a private army to deter the advances of other lords etc

If it were an ultramarine I think Guilliman would side with the Inquisition. We all know what the lodges did to the original traitor legions. Something that would seem good like breaking an oath to remember a fallen brother can have dire consequences.

What was the Deathwatch book that said that the knowledge of the foe fought would be taken back to the returning Marines chapter and shared?
@duffman2.0963 жыл бұрын
I like to think they have to keep there silence because they don't want the advanced tactics of kill teams being used by chapters as its the death watches edge over them and they have there own agendas to keep not known... basicly black ops in 40k...
@RecoveringLoLAddict4 жыл бұрын
Man thats a stupid oath that would never work I think the writer forgot space marines are sent to the deathwatch in order to become specialist xeno killers, how is his training going to account for anything when HE CANNOT SHARE HIS EXPERIENCES.

Okay what do the Mortifactors think of the Ynnari eldar faction? Both death cults but a galaxy apart in terms of tradition and beliefs. What do Mortifactors think of resurrection, does an eldar witch resurrecting the Primarch Guilliman get an free pass? Or does this spit in the face of their chapters identity? Or does Guilliman need to tell the morts "Hey brothers, chill. She did me and the Imperium a solid!"

Wolf Lord Rho have you read passages from the novella "Wolf King"?
@seandees30284 жыл бұрын
Never speaking of what they do is not the same as sharing their experience. As an example, talking about a DeathWatch crusade against the Eldar is forbidden, but if their originating chapter faces a similar Eldar force they could say, "Watch out for XXXXXX, they use XXXX" and never speak of how they know it. In our games this is permitted since the DeathWatch of previous editions was intended to share knowledge of how to combat the Xeno effectively. Apparently less so in more recent editions.

That they are not allowed to speak about the missions could be related to some things Inquisitors do, when they ally with some Xenos or use technologies ect. and if some SM Chapters hear of that it may have massive drawbacks. Black Templars f.e. may just starting a crusade for siding with a xenos and may declare war against part taking chapters and the inquisition ect.
@oliverallen53244 жыл бұрын
I don't know who would be the inquisitions arm in the initiation of violence against a space marine oath breaker. Deathwatch don't fight marines. Grey Knights don't fight loyal Marines. Sisters of Battle don't fight marines either. Tempestus maybe? The threat seems idle, logistically.

I just want Rowboat Girlyman to just shit on an inquisitor just once... please GW.
@liamdevereux69873 жыл бұрын
I think it's not the knowledge of the xenos that is the reason they cannot speak I think it is what they see of other chapters , if oyu serve alongside a blood angel who succumbs to the thirst and speak of it you destroy the chapter and all their descendants.

How would the Inquisition know if a former Deathwatch marine spoke of their deeds to their chapter?

Great story, but grimderp over-the-top-ness. One thing is to keep secrecy about your mission within the Deatchwatch, even swearing on it. It’s like secret service. However threatening with chapter-wide destruction should a single individual disclose any details is not only stupid but impossible to enforce.
@maciekwilkosz63772 жыл бұрын
How would Inquisition even know these things? They're not omnipresent...
