The #burgertime Arcade game, released in 1982 by Data East is one that I have always felt did not really get its due props as a pioneer in food related platform gaming, on #Atari home systems at least. There are, however, a number of good clones across the #atari8bit,#atari5200 #atari7800 , #atarist and also the #atari2600 to look at today

Cool! I just wrote an article for Old School Gamer on this game and the various home ports! Nice video!

Great survey and comparative reviews! My AA order of Beef Drop VE for the 7800 is still stuck in the purgatory known as the Last Chance Sale queue. I did get a digital copy of 5200 Beef Drop for free with my purchase of the AtariMax cartridge a few years ago. I’ll have to do a comparison at some point when my AA order is delivered. Chaotic Grill looks and sounds so deliciously good for the 2600.

I have an Atari Vox and cart (I don't remember which one) still stuck in the last chance queue too. =) Those three are so good though, you can't go wrong.

I did get my 7800 version of Beef Drop, but don’t be jealous. I only got a couple of games from the Atari Age close out and regret not getting more games. Great comparisons here.

3:53 Splendid Nut said he is not planning on completing the game. That sucks. It's a great port. It's quite an accomplishment to get it as far as it is. But do keep in mind when comparing the original BT to chaotic grill, this game runs on the ARM board. This simply would not be possible without it. The 2600 eats up a lot of cycles having to draw the screen. The game logic runs mostly when the frame finishes the bottom right of the screen and moves back to the top. Having the ARM offloads all of the processing to the cartridge.

Choplifter would be a challenge to judge because you have the ports based on the original Apple II game and then ports based on the arcade port of the Apple II game.

One fun thing about this is exploring the 8bit and ST libraries for clones I've never played, but also finding gems that viewers like you point out.

6:34 Can you tell me where I can find burgertime by Ken Siders? I never knew that existed and I'd like to check it out.

My old brain might be misfiring but i could have sworn that Antic or ANALOG had published an Atari Basic knockoff. The name eludes me and was so slow as to probably deserves to not be on your list...

The Intellivision port will always be my preferred way to play. Sorry Atari!

The reason Atari 2600 BT looks so bad is Mattel's marketing. They had a strict "no flickering" rule. Marketing bragged about the lack of flicker in Intellivision games. They made a big deal about it. Of course, Intellivision didn't flicker not because it doesn't flicker, but because there was a rule against it. Intellivision games suffered for it too. The programmer said the game was impossible without extra RAM and flickering. They caved in and gave him 2k (I'm not sure if it's 2kBytes of extra RAM or 2kb, but from what I can find it's actually 2kBytes) of extra RAM on the cartridge, but they would not budge on the flickering. Had they allowed him to use flicker, the game would have looked so much better. The story about it is on the blue sky rangers site. This is not the first time marketing killed a game with their dumb rules.

Awesome info! The Blue Sky Rangers office at Mattel Electronics was just down the street from our house when we were kids. All of these companies made bad marketing decisions that affected the game adversely.

@@IntoTheVerticalBlank The 5200 controller is the perfect example. Intellivision ads bragged about their 16-way game disk and compared it favorably to the 2600's measly 8 way joystick. Atari's marketing wanted to upstage Mattel about the infinite directions with the analog stick. It apparently never occurred to any of them that all the big arcade hits had a measly 8 way joystick. Atari marketing could have a field day about how difficult the disc was when playing games requiring tight control. But they missed that boat.

Is there evidence anywhere of any company (Intellivision?) starting an 8-bit/5200 port?
@IntoTheVerticalBlank
@IntoTheVerticalBlank 3 ай бұрын
I only remember hearing that they had it on the list of ports, but because the 5200 was faltering it wad not started or not completed. Still investigating.
