Being an actor who did so much theater it was hard for him to understand just how popular the penguin character was and still is. Still one of the grades who's work in the Twilight zone episodes great stuff and of course Mickey one of the greatest characters of all time.

It's very interesting to notice a certain pattern in actors, especially the older ones. They don't reject fame because of a more popular role, but you can tell that they truly are bothered by being remembered by the audience solely for these roles. The way he mentions his role as the Penguin in the Batman series and even Rocky, stating that he hasn't even watched the film, illustrates this sentiment

Some "interesting" editing and dissolves here. Mr. Meredith seemed a bit peeved that people remember his mainstream roles more than the other work he did. But it's something he had to accept; most of us will always think of him as the bank clerk whose eyeglasses broke, or the quacking villain in the top hat and monacle. I can't even begin to imagine how much voice work he had done, from TV commercial narration to animated characters in films or TV. He was good at his craft, whether live on the stage or whatever venue was fortunate enough to have him. I recall a lot of his work, including his turn as Mr. Mole in Faerie Tale Theatre-- in which he sang a tune.

Burgess Meredith (What a name...) as Mickey was the living incarnation of my grandfather....also called "Mick" who served in the RAF during the war and played in goal for Everton FC in the post-war years. Looks, mannerisms and also the great working class wisdom and toughness he projected with that character. I first saw him in Clash Of The Titans playing "Amon" (I think)...the amphitheatre playwright who helps Perseus (Harry Hamlyn) grasp his future path and the various gifts he receives from the gods of Olympus. A very fine actor, fondly remembered!!

One of the earliest things you can see Burgess Meredith in is a WW2 film for the US army in how a G.I. should behave in Britain (look it up on KZbin). He was great in the 60's Twilight Zone in an episode where he played a banker who loved books then a nuclear strike happened when he was in the vault. He was perfect as the Penguin and good in Clash of the Titans.

He sounded like he didn’t liked playing the penguin, which sucks because he was a perfect actor to play the penguin.
@bratton793 жыл бұрын
I guess it’s because he’s played much better roles more serious roles. Hopefully he came to understand that he enriched the lives of millions of children all over the world by bringing the Penguin to life. He was worried about his legacy perhaps. I guess he didn’t want to be remembered as a silly cartoonish villain. I remember him as Mickey, the tough bastard from Rocky. His tombstone probably says Get up you SOB. As long as it doesn’t say Waa Waa Waa.
@rh449 Жыл бұрын
I think his reaction is similar to Alec Guinness' reaction to Star Wars. He saw it as a small part and "just another job", and grew to resent it when it eclipsed all his other work in the minds of the public. Of course, Guinness turned that dislike into an art-form, whereas Meredith remained only mildly dismissive.

Burgess meredith was a great actor it will never be another actor like him when I saw his death scene in rocky 3 that was the moment when he was sopose to be passed away and that was the moment when sly Stallone no that he was gone and he lays on side of him and broke down that was saddest moment to watch and then they had to put him in a vault that was the moment in that movie

It’s odd. I’ve heard several actors say the same thing - “I’ve never seen it”. For example, Johnny Depp said he never saw Pirates of the Caribbean.
@mattn65912 жыл бұрын
He said between Rocky and Santa Claus; i looked it up - he was in a movie called Santa Claus in 1985 so I bet he is referring to Rocky 4 that he hadn't seen (maybe they used flashbacks?)

"You used me, where's my check?" Sounds like there was some animosity between Sly and Burgess, can anybody elaborate?
@StuUngar7 жыл бұрын
Colt Moreau Pitt Idk, but there was actual animosity between Stallone and Burt Young and also Carl Weathers. I think Burgess is simply referring to being used in flashback scenes in Rocky 4 and perhaps not being paid....that changed in Back to the Future 2 when they used stock footage and a look alike for Crispin Glover without his permission. Fwiw, Burgess appeared in Rocky V and did original scenes for a flashback sequence.
@MagicAyrtonforever6 жыл бұрын
Colt Moreau Pitt yeah I think Stallone was the greedy one.. Which is why Carl Weathers never came back
