An important thing you missed - by getting cavalier on castle you’ll get paladins quicker than any civ once hitting imperial age. Getting paladins before everyone else can easily snowball the game… and it’s 50% off!

The Coustillier is great in Hammer and Anvil tactics. the high upfront damage makes them able to do immense damage on a charge and then pull out, while your anvil unit acts to keep the enemy in place or punish them for breaking and pursuing.

When I play Burgundians, I tend to get double-bit axe as soon as I can - i.e. as soon as I have a lumber camp. I think that it might even be worthwhile to build the lumber camp earlier than most civs would. The tech comes in early enough that it would be hard for an opponent to punish you for it. With it only costing 50 food (and 50 wood, though I don't really consider that a serious consideration since it increases wood-gather rate, and I'm getting it before I actually need the wood for something else), it doesn't really seem to hurt my early game. At worst, getting double-bit axe early would delay feudal age by one vil, and I suspect that it usually won't even do that.
@mikaj1462
@mikaj1462 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it pays it back in dark age but you could also have maybe one less vill on wood gathering food which would justify Dbit axe asap.

A few days ago I played as Burgundians in an online multiplayer game. I had 5 towncenters, was cranking out villagers and had paladins to assist my allies. I hit Flemish Revolution to make an instant army after I hit my population cap. Suddenly having the largest military in the game allowed me to completely overpower one enemy that we were struggling against. Took some time to get farmers and lumberjacks back to work, but I was a pocket player and had the time to rebuild.

one thing that I don't think is apparent from the video is that the +25% damage applies to attack bonuses as well, so although it looks almost useless for the bombard cannon and cannon galleon, it's quite a big difference

Burgundians are my favourite civ so for once I actually knew most of what was in this video, but it's good to get confirmation of what I already suspected in a few areas and the comparison of their cavs to other civs' knights was interesting. I'll also probably end up mixing a few of their unique unit into my armies more often, I didn't realise how good the build time was.

I can see Flemish Revolution being a tech that you would certainly use to seal the deal for a victory, like a final Screw You moment. Like, imagine you’re already winning, but in doing so the other player was able to fight off most of your units leaving you with small numbers to finish the job of destroying his base. You retreat for now, leaving him to think he can rebuild in peace. But, then he notices a huge army of like maybe 90 to 100 Flemish Militia marching their way to his base and he just barely managed to get a few units out. He already knew he was losing, but not like this.

I just find it weird that the Coustillier uses a fauchard on horseback. That... wouldn't be ideal. >__> Make more sense if they attacked with a couched lance then switched to a mace. The fauchard was done most likely to make them more visually striking though.
@Volcano4981
@Volcano4981 2 жыл бұрын
It does kind of bother me logic-wise but I have to admit it looks cool. Though it doesn't look as ridiculous as Knights with only a sword, or, worse, Cataphracts, just merely tapping infantry with their swords, of all weapons, and mowing them down. You indeed nailed it that Byzantine Cataphracts or Clibanarii irl used maces, and the Parthian model they were based on had two-handed lances, referred to as a contus by the Romans.
@mikelivingood7797

The layout of this video is exceptional. Unfortunately the coustillier video is out of date after the changes. I would be nice if SOTL could update the video. Equal resources gives you 9 knights and 11 coustilliers. Lanchester's law comes into play as the initial extra damage used by extra coustilliers will have a snowball effect. Optimally, if 4 attack one knight they can take it out with the 4 initial hits. DPS and damage per minute do not fairly portray fights as fights will only last 10 to 20 seconds.

age of mythology did kind of have a similar version of flamish revolution wich was the ragnarok god power for some nordic civs, but it was way superior since it was completely free, the units it transfered into also were hero units and didnt atually block you from building more collectors or midgets, it basically resets your eco instead of commpletely halting it

I think Flemish Militia really shines in teamfights. Even if you get rushed, if you can build back up your economy near the safety of allies, you can spam villagers and then toggle to a very large amount of a very solid unit, especially at the end of the game. Also the Coustillier is amazing for backing up your teams pushes/defending.

The closest I can think of to the Monk point is the Slavs without Heresy or Faith but their actual Monks get the rest of the techs plus extra armour from Orthodoxy, or Vikings for the naval civ point with no access to Fire Ships at all. The siege civs are safe for this round at least, but then again calling them siege civs is kind of an informal designation by us (the AoE community), sooo... Edit: I was going to point out none of the 'siege civs' had Bombards but it's only really Mongols and Celts upon thinking about it again Edit 2: The Slavs point was also before I realised DE gave them Faith some time down the line and now Orthodoxy being replaced with Detinets

I can sorta see the case for Burgundians being badly designed. Flemish Revolution is clearly meant to be a comeback mechanic, which is a fine idea. This game can be quite snowbally. But it seems like one that is more impactful at lower skill levels. I can see it being both undertuned at pro-level play and a get out of jail free card at low elos. Given the majority of people are low elo... I can see this motivating a lot of resentment to the Burgundians. I'm still not sold on their unique unit. I like the concept but am sceptical of the execution. I think the idea of getting techs early is a really cool idea. I wish it was something that was considered much earlier in AoE2's life so that more civilizations could have techs they get early. With only one civ getting this bonus, it seems weird that it is the Burgundians and not the Chinese, but I guess it is too late for that. I wonder if this is also something that contributes to the feeling of bad design. It is something that sounds overpowered, but is actually a fine bonus once you do the math. I imagine most believe this bonus is much stronger than it actually is.

I would like to contest the results of that poll when you have freaking *Teutons* with a blatantly unfair 'here, have cheaper farms from the get-go' bonus, which you have to pay absolutely nothing for; their unique tower garrison mechanics which just encourage more lame tower rush 'strategies' (rather than, say, only towers within a few tiles of a Town Centre get this), pretty much all of the power units, economy and defensive upgrades (besides lacking Bracer and Architecture, so they aren't good at being an actual defensive civ) with just longer range Castles, the additional armour on their Barracks and Stable units completely free on already FU units (except Husbandry for their knight line, and I won't even go into their puny scouts) rather than it being a unique tech, and their infamous unique unit. They're not OP at all, and still quite mortal to many ranged units, but every bit of the civ's design is just such a pure copout in being ridiculous and needing no forethought or actively working to take advantage of it, rather than reasonable and having some kind of drawback. To that latter point's end though, Franks are also kind of in that category, just getting not one but two (three if you count in the berries, four with the free farm upgrades, five with the knight LOS) boosts to their overplayed cavalry spam. Flemish Revolution? Well, if for some reason you and your opponent are still standing, better pray you have good defences intact because you will need to rebuild your economy. Goths' ahistorical infantry spam till the end of the fortnight? They lack Plate Mail Armour, have no Stone Walls or good towers of any kind, and despite having a decent range of other options, most of their units are lacking a few upgrades. Also, you at least need to think about making the right infantry cocktail as Huskarls alone cannot carry you the game. Britons' Longbowmen are another infamous unit and the civ is quite well-rounded, and I am not a fan of their archers getting extra range on Castle and Imp, but at least they miss Thumb Ring and their cavalry isn't completely up to scratch without Bloodlines. Anyway, sorry this has been a long rant haha

I also think that it's actually *Poles* who are the worst designed of the DE civs if I'm being honest. Too OP.

A fun thing my friend and I have done with burgundians: On Black Forest he will play burgundians, and I will play lithuanians. I do a normal fast castle, then start building as many castles as I can, and mine all the gold and stone near my base. collect relics, and start spamming leitis. When I run out of pop space i start deleting villagers until i have 200 leitis. He booms to 200 villagers, uses flemish revolution if we start to get overwhelmed before I hit critical mass on leitis, and that is the only military he makes. just sends me resources for the rest of the game. It has not failed yet.
