Although I hate the idea of being told by others what I can and cannot do, this does not extend to anything with a potential danger. If there's incidents happening with anything or even calls to end your sense of "fun", you should probably heed the warnings. People die all the time and you wouldn't think it will happen to you, but that's exactly why it most likely will.

I know he's long dead but the fact that he really wanted to get out but he never got to and never will is just so heartbreaking. He's still there, completely alone in that awful tunnel even after 14 years and will be there forever and never will be properly laid to rest. It's just a terrible way to go and I can't imagine how his family is feeling knowing all that. I'd probably never know peace if I was them.

My dad was one of the lead rescuers on the Utah County Search and Rescue team that responded to Nutty Putty. My dad was one of the last people to talk to John alive. He seemed to come to terms that this was the end, and fell unconscious shortly after. After he became unresponsive the rescue efforts went from astronomically difficult to impossible. The rescuers left the cave after more hours of trying with anything they could, and shared in a prayer with the family. Every year on Thanksgiving weekend you can always catch my dad in some corner of the house by himself thinking about John. Rest in Peace John. It is because of you that my dad and many members of that Utah County team felt inspired to pay many thousands of dollars to go to the most advanced trench, collapsed, and cave rescues courses and schools that exist within the United States, and as a result, dozens of people were saved.

I find it weird that, on multiple occasions, two boys got stuck in the same area where John Edward Jones went and got stuck upside down. What raises my curiosity is why the authorities didn't take preventive measures, such as sealing off that particular tunnel in the cave. Despite being aware of the potential danger and having previously sealed the cave due to safety concerns, they opted to reopen it based on public demand. It seems unusual that they neglected to address the specific hazard posed by that tunnel, why didn't they seal that tunnel of the cave when they knew how dangerous it was and still left it open without any warning note or barrier there. Even if they reopened the cave, they could have at least sealed that specific tunnel. This is such a big mistake and negligence at their end, to be very honest.

I agree. They installed a locked gate at the entrance and only those with a permit for the day could unlock it. Why not also put gates blocking access to unmapped passages. This was preventable. For every rescue there were probably dozens of near misses that were close to needing rescues. There were extremely dangerous parts of this cave.

I'm a fan of horror, true crime and mysteries and I must say, this is one of the most disturbing stories I've come across. The sheer idea of being trapped like that, upside down and unable to do anything, tons of other people getting themselves in danger to rescue you and non of it working... He just didnt do his research on the cave properly and made the wrong turn. Has nothing to do with risking your life. I never was a thrill seeker of any kind, so I watch this stuff and experience it vicariously, and with high anxiety, I just can't wrap it around my head why anyone would take these kind of chances. I would be thinking about all the things that could go wrong and I suppose that is a deterrent for me, I live a pretty boring life compared to this. It was like he didn't give it much thought, and literally went head first, he was a little older and gained some pounds and not that familiar with that cave, even if it was a beginners cave.

I explored these caves twice. My initial visit was with 6 friends. I got a little ridiculed for chickening out on a narrow passage and backed out while I still could. The 2nd time, I was the lead with one other friend (1st timer). Again, didn’t try anything too dangerous but I got lost trying to exit because you have to go up, then down, then up again like a horizontal S. So when you are looking for the exit shaft, your flashlight looks like it is hitting 360* or rock wall. It took me two hours of searching foot by foot, little passage by little passage before I found my way out. I swore off the caves forever after that.

Exhibit 182892 of why I am not into caving or cave diving 😭 I'm working towards volunteer SAR with my canine as well as eventually W-EMT myself and mounted tracking with a sure-footed mule. I can't do direct recovery work myself, but it's such important work. Rescue gear failing is absolutely a worst nightmare on top of an already horrifically unreal situation. Bless this recovery team. Cave work is so incredibly difficult and delicate, many mountain team workers and wildfire fighters won't touch it. Rope climbing, horse riding, snorkeling, sure. I RESPECT caves. Just like I respect the ocean and only go on or in it when I'm ready to die (ie rarely). And why I only boulder (and don't free climb or slackline). I just binged all your videos and realized, voluntarily putting oneself out of satellite device reach is wild. Like of all the things you've covered, nearly all except the caving and cave diving (or multiple layers of steel) could've been aided with satellite communication devices. I've been seeing people entertain solo phone free camping trips and I always rail on taking a sat device if absolutely nothing else.

Have you seen the rescue about the Thailand cave, with 12 children and 1 adult were trapped for 17 days. The rescue team had to dive for 2 and a half hours to get to them; then they had to sedate the children to dive them back! The rescue team was literally god sent

I watched this story yesterday, and woke up today with the drawing of him upside down in the tunnel in my mind, and couldn't help imagining what he had felt, with his arms unable to move, his position, and the dread realizing there was nothing he could do to get out of this pit.... truly horrifying story. I’ve been in the Nutty Putty cave several times before it was closed due to this incident. I even made my way through the birth canal section but the area John attempted to go through is unfathomable. I can tell you having spent time in that cave that it’s disgusting, it’s unbearably hot, zero breeze and just stagnant bad smelling air and everywhere in the cave is kind of slimy. Getting stuck and passing the way he did is absolutely the worst nightmare I could imagine. Sad story for sure.

At some point as he was crawling through the narrow passage, John must have realized he would have extreme difficulty fitting through the space if he continued. He then must have made the decision to keep going rather than back out. I wonder if his competitiveness kicked in at that point and he was determined to "beat" the cave? You have to be very confident and sure of yourself to be in medical school and these traits, which would help him in his studies, may have led to his death.

I heard he was absolutely sure this was the birth canal in which there is a very tight squeeze to get in but eventually it opens up but he had taken the wrong turn earlier where he was to turn right but turned left instead and eventually what he thought to be the birth canal ended up being a dead end.. it's sad but God gave us intellect and the ability to make choices we have to be wise and know our limits sometimes never the less what's done is done nothing can be changed..

Im not even sure he was ever going to be removed from that spot regardless of any plan. He truly went past the point of never returning once he went into that part of the cave. If he had stopped at the cockscrew section of the passage, he might have had a chance. He realized that he couldn't turn around, he saw that he wasn't fitting in anymore, yet he pressed on when he should've stopped, had his brother call for help and waited there for help to arrive. At the very least he wouldn't have been stuck upside down with the blood rushing to his torso and head, his legs numb and his arms pinned, unable to move or to assist in his own rescue in any way. Once he went head down into the hole he was pretty much doomed. He would've had an even better chance of survival if he hadn't gone down there at all in the first place.

There are three areas on Earth where recovering the remains of people who have died is simply too dangerous to attempt: The tops of tall mountains, inside of underwater caves, and inside of above-water caves. There are still explorers who died on Mount Everest in a seated position inside of an ice cave that mountaineers have to pass every time they climb, a reminder that, if you die up there, no one is coming to claim your body. I saw a video about a diver who could not be recovered after he got lost exploring an undersea cave. That cave is now his tomb. The Nutty Putty caves are now this man's tomb as well. Know your limits as a human, and realize that the Earth does not care if you suffocate, drown or freeze to death trying to explore parts of it.

Once you are married and have a family, there must be a limit to the risk you would take. Feeding your adrenaline or 'pushing yourself' against nature to prove something will not replace a husband or father if it goes wrong. Nature does not care about your background, personality or family. There must be a balance at some point so you can enjoy what you do without having to pay the ultimate price. If you have an accident on the air the propability of you dying is 100 percent. To compare driving with sky diving you must have the same amount of people sky diving each day. The issue is that there is no room for mistakes so you do special training. Also driving is an essential need, not a hobby

It was once legal to drive under the influence and when it was made illegal some people thought it was an infringement on individual freedom. These are the same types of people who insisted that a cave system, that was repeatedly proven to be dangerous, should stay open to public use, insisting that closing it is infringing on personal liberties. Safety laws and regulations exist for a reason, and they usually fall into place only after disaster happens. The fact that someone said they'd never heard of any dangerous incidents occurring in the cave before just proves that they did not research or think anywhere beyond their own selfish desires when addressing the issue of the closure.

Agreed. It's also never just about yourself. In this case, several rescuers risked their lives and were injured in their attempts to save him and his child was left without a father. And so many innocents are killed by drunk drivers every year. Making risky choices can affect, hurt, and even kill the people around you (loved ones, rescuers, innocent bystanders), so of course not everyone should be given free reign all the time!

The videos alone tickle something in my stomach that causes a sense of the most primal fear I think I have ever felt… For no money, no promise of all my dearest fulfilled, I would EVER go somewhere in a cave like that ever. This literally is digging yourself your own grave… This is such a tragedy. The amount of claustrophobia I experienced just watching this video under open sky is immeasurable. I can't even imagine or quantify how much he had gone through all those hours and each hour feeling like a millennium with all that death-level pain and one-by-one failing of internal systems in the body with all that accumulation of fluids and so on. I pray to God to never repeat this to any other human in future again.
