Vlog Every Day in September 2021 - Episode 8
Graham Strang's Roots and Routes #388
Filmed September 8, 2021
Today, I witnessed one of the most amazing things I've ever had the opportunity to vlog, I had always known the hope slide buried a 3 kilometre stretch of the Hope-Princeton highway, but what I never knew was that remnants the old highway still exist.

My parents and I stopped at the fork where the original road was in 1973. Back then I remember seeing that highway vanish into the rocks. I'll bet if someone went into the trees that way there would still be some of that visible.

Nice to see a young person take interest in history like this. I'm the same way. I remember as a kid in the 1970's, and 80's taking the rebuilt road that zig zagged through the slide many times heading to Trail with my parents.I was always in awe of the slide, and it made me think of the 2 people still intomed in it. At that time you could still clearly see the destroyed tree line that went up the other side of the valley, then back down. Awesome power of nature for sure. Also there was a lake that simply vanished.

The highway has undergone numerous alignments over the years. When you reached that sharper corner and commented if the highway may have continued in a more straighter line you were correct on that. Keep in mind Highway 3 skirted the shore of Outram Lake below Johnsons Peak and is now covered up. The 4 people that died were actually on the other side of the slide on the Southeast part of the highway.

Wow! Thanks so much for all this info, I'm really glad to have some more context on this, that's really interesting!

Just an addition to my comment below. If you go onto Google Earth and zoom in the the slide area, draw a line from where you parked and go right across the slide area to where it would join up with the original highway on the other side. Other than a few bends this is pretty much how the original highway was aligned. It is buried inder the rock now as is Outram (Beaver) Lake. The airplane that crashed was an RCAF Albatross and the wreckage can still be found on the Northwest section. It crashed April 23, 1966 killing 5 of the 6 onboard. It was going from Comox to Williams Lake.

I drove that road in 1969. Thete were rocks the size of houses the road had to go around. It still us a hazardous area for planes.

Enjoyed the video....my Grampa drove me up shortly after it happened in February 1965 it was a huge story at the time and I remember my Grandparents house being shaken with the earthquake that caused the quake we lived on 176 street just of the No 1 Hwy in Surrey BC,which opened June of 1964

My dad's car got hit by a big rock at the slide site about 5 hrs before the slide happened we heard about it the next morning . He had to go back to work in Princeton via Merritt for a while after it.

The right side of the slope is moving again. Since the floods two years ago a seam has appeared .......I would not be in a dwelling north of the hiway/lake

The people who died were at the Northeastern portion. The rockslide came down, hit the lake and pushed right up the adjacent mountain where it came to a stop. Then after clinging to the mountain face it before it all slid back down, mud, trees and rock and it was this backslide is what it the people.

Ive been over the new highway a couple of times, vacationing in Canada. I could smell it just looking at your video. Funny how that works.

6:25 the right is the original road, the left is "newer" road built over the slide. Most of what you have been walking on up to that point is the newer road as well.

The unpaved, then paved section you first walked on in the shoefly sectionthat was constracted just hours to days over top of the slide. The ORIGINAL section went along the base of the mountain that came down. There was sctually a lake where you were standing at the beginning of your video which you might mention further into your video.

Dude I'm not sure where you're getting your information but this tragedy actually happened on April 29 1903 and between 80 and 90 people perished in the aftermath. The Frank Slide was a massive rockslide that buried part of the mining town of Frank in the District of Alberta of the North-West Territories,[nb 1] Canada, at 4:10 a.m. on April 29, 1903. Around 44 million cubic metres/110 million tonnes (120 million short tons) of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain.[1] Witnesses reported that within 100 seconds the rock reached up the opposing hills, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) line and the coal mine. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents died, most of whom remain buried in the rubble. Multiple factors led to the slide: Turtle Mountain's formation left it in a constant state of instability. Coal mining operations may have weakened the mountain's internal structure, as did a wet winter and cold snap on the night of the disaster.

I remember driving over the old alignment many times; the last 2 times was in the summer of 1964. Little did anyone know that the road would be covered by a slide just a few months later. I remember the new road built over the slide. I drove over it in the spring of 1965; it was initially unpaved.
