Burj Khalifa is the current tallest building in the world. It surpassed the last title holder Tapei 101 in Taiwan. It is located in downtown Dubai besides Dubai Mall. It has been deveoped by Emaar properties. Construction of Dubai mall started in 2004 and it opened in 2010. It is a mixed use property for both business and residences. It has a total height of 829.8 m (2,722 ft, or just over half a mile). During construction phase the name of the building was Burj Dubai. However, Abu Dhabi and UAE goverment lent money to Dubai to pay off its debts. During inaguration it was named Burj Khalifa in honour of ex UAE president Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Burj Khalifa was designed by a team led by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm that designed the Sears Tower in Chicago, a previous record holder for the world's tallest building. The design is derived from the Islamic architecture of the region, such as in the Great Mosque of Samarra. Burj Khalifa uses the bundled tube design of the Willis Tower, invented by Fazlur Rahman Khan, a Bangladeshi American structural engineer and architect. The primary contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea, together with local company Arabtec and the Belgian group BESIX.
Level 152 - 154 is the heighest public are allowed to go. It has a lounge and tickets cost 769 AED. It also includes corporate suites, Atmoshphere restaurant, residences and Armani hotel. Level 148, 124 and 125 deck ovservatory ticket costs AED 399 and Level 124 & 125 observatory ticket costs AED 179. There are few other ticket combinations. Watch the video for all details. The first batch to the top starts at 8 AM and till 12 AM. To reach the designated area from where the ticket check happens, one has walk quite a bit through Dubai mall. The star attraction apart from the view from top is the world's fastest elevator which moves at 10 meters/sec. 124th floor was reached in 60 seconds.
