Dietrich Bonhoeffer is well known for his heroic opposition to the Nazis. Martin Hauerwas examines Bonhoeffer's understanding of lying and why it's appropriate to hold politics to a higher standard of truthful speech. This relationship between truth and politics is a particular challenge for democratic regimes. Series: Burke Lectureship on Religion & Society [4/2004] [Humanities] [Show ID: 8498]

Hauerwas is a fresh and truthful voice for the church. I have listened and learned from him for 15 years and I am still amazed at his work. If it weren't for him I would not have remained Christian. He shows how the church is truly relevant! Thank God for Dr. Hauerwas.

I've read him, I've worshiped with him, I've heard him lecture, and I still don't know what to make of him. :)

@superstarkemarie Awww, he's just sayin' it with his Southern American accent. When I spent some time in Germany, I never could get that "oe" phonic right.

Hauerwas is the Ron Swanson of the theological world. Ever the contrarian, with a laugh that is funnier than his jokes, lol

I do wish the person introducing the lecture had been a lie.

I know it's not the most important thing, but it drives me crazy that he's mispronouncing Bonhoeffer.

But he's pronouncing it the way essentially every speaker of American English does. Of course there's a gap between this pronunciation and the proper German pronunciation. But why single him out for doing what everyone else is doing, too?
