Perfectly well read and understandable for a foreigner like me. As a monarchist and a contempter of the revolution, Burker's Reflections has been one of my bedside books for decades, though the length of it and the absence of chapters requires a good deal of attention. I have learnt by heart some passages such as: The age of chivalry... and resort to it frequently as it applies so perfectly to modern politics. I have the London edition of 1790 and a cheap modern edition. Thanks for this excellent documentary.

I am finding essential to learn more about the thought of figures such as Burke, in the current time. We are living in a noisy period that is leading to extremist views. Edmund Burke can remind us of the dangers of taking that road.

25:08 Burke's famous speech feels exceedingly pertinent to current day politics. Thank you for bringing it forward. "...not a Congress of ambassadors from different and hostile interests...each must maintain... against other agents and advocates. But, Parliament is a deliberative assembly of one nation with one interest: that of the whole, where not local purposes, not local prejudices ought to guide, but the general good resulting from the general reason of the whole..."

Edmund Burke was an Anglo-Irish statesman and philosopher. He spent most of his career in Great Britain. Born in Dublin, Burke served as a member of Parliament (MP) between 1766 and 1794 in the House of Commons of Great Britain with the Whig Party.

I did enjoy this documentary. At a time when there is a tendancy to pull conservatism towards a hard ideological right he is a historical reminder that this should not happen. Burke made a career of pursuing the progressive policies of his time in an effort to preserve the very best of what he inherited from his forefathers. Most people are neither left,nor right . Most are comfortably in the center. Modern Conservatism would do well to remember this lesson from Burke.

Thanks for this concise outline which seems to balance the man with his effective engagement with history and the history of ideas. It seems to me all students of history should avoid a diet of speculators and know alls and look for those like Burke , who got grounded in public service work or like Carlyse who are relentless in pursuing the truth and who want us to learn the hard lessons of deep injustices and how humans perpetuate them.

It gets rather irritating when people assume conservativism is synonymous with bigotry and oppression 😒 I’m a classical/traditional liberal but I see the value of conservative politics because I actually understand what true conservatism is. I’ve met plenty of socialists who held very unpleasant political views about certain people yet they are not always subject to the same scrutiny. To assume that an individual is an authoritarian or a bigot simply for having some Burkean conservative views is absurd
@brandonf244 ай бұрын
🤦🤦🤦 yeah...sure...because Jesus, as a man so far removed from Liberalism of any sort in our time, would identify himself as a reactionary conservative. 😂 Please. Setting aside deification, it's absolutely delusional to think that a martyr, praised for his charity and empathy for the most vulnerable members of a society of his time, would turn a blind eye to those of any time while serving as a proponent for the interests of an elite, patrician few or landed gentry. I will say this...your choice of Christ as "the father of conservatism" demonstrates some religiosity on your part...so much so that you must perceive yourself, and conservatism at-large, as having a monopoly on virtue...if not truth itself. May he be ashamed of anyone using his name as a sociopolitical cudgel to justify their wanton reach for political power at the expense of others. As an American liberal, I can say that conservatism is necessary for any system however, especially as I observe the devolution of our own major conservative political party beyond all recognition...now wholly antithetical to our experiment. Conservatism tempers the haste of liberal idealism with some inherent pragmatism.
