I'm curious whether you considered or tested metallic gold powder in epoxy? It would likely fill the cracks more completely, enabling a flush surface -- which may or may not be desireable, and it make not look as much like real gold. I'm planning on doing something similar with a wooden bowl that has a crack running down from the edge. Since it will be used for food, I need a smooth surface that won't catch and hold food goop. I could always fill the rough gold leaf gaps with clear epoxy to retain the gold look but eliminate the tiny gaps that will hold food... Thanks for the info and the great demo!

Epoxy with ‘gold’ would just look like plastic with fakey looking gold crap in it. That’s why the Japanese craftsman still use real gold
@BurkeMakesStuff Жыл бұрын
Yes. I didn’t like the look, HOWEVER, I almost went with gold leaf in epoxy. The only issue was getting into the tiny tiny opening, so I went with what I did in the video.

I had the idea to kintsugi the warn walnut veneer of a dressing table that's been in my family for 100 years, and I'm hoping this technique will work for me! Thanks so much for having this idea too and doing it first.

Thanks so much for this. I have this wooden desk I'm refreshing, and I want to fill the cracks with gold, and have been noodling on the best way to do it. I don't want to have gold just draining down the cracks into nowhereland... I would use fake gold leaf, not 24k ... way too rich for my blood. I love it! But ... need to fill the cracks first then put the gold leaf on top, I think. You've given me so much of a boost here! Thank you!

I think youd use lamp gas, from whale oil, just a lamp, with a directional nozzle, and good airflow, to melt gold wire, drip it into place, and further form it, with dental tool like instruments. In antiquity, a similar technique, but using a very small spout, from a tiny crucible, above a coal fire, heated by bellows
@BurkeMakesStuff8 күн бұрын
Interesting. Not at all how I did it, but I guess that could work. Problem would be the wasted gold on the interior of the project. Expensive that way, since only the gold on the outside is seen.

Yes, I think "merch" would be great. Instructions for projects that includes brands of products you use to accomplish them. Also, I'd buy a tee-shirt or a hat. Want to see more of what you did with the piano you decomposed ... especially the keyboard. I know a maker who designs bracelets using guitar string. Maybe you could do that with all those hundreds of strings from the piano.

That's a cool effect. I've mused about using copper to do something similar. Your take on it turned out great. As far as the merchandise thing goes, I'm on the fence. I have several makers I follow because I like their content. I'll use April as an example since you mentioned her. She sells wearable items, etc. with her logo in them as well as her conversion chart wall hangers. Now, I'm not going to buy a hat, shirt, or sticker from her, but I would buy a conversion chart, because it's something that serves a utility to me. If she popped a sticker in the box with the order, then I'd smile and stick it somewhere in the shop. Now, that's just me. I'm not a "fan" of April per se, but I'm really not the fan type. I'd much rather have a beer with you and get to know you as a person than get your autograph and parade around in clothes with your name on them. Now, if you came out with a magnetic cup holder or pencil holder that mounts on my table saw, then I might bite. 😂

Okay so I love the gold leaf. I'm going to have to do some experimenting. However, I'm thinking copper leaf and maybe trying to get it to patina in a few areas. I have a kitchen table to fix and I want to add some art and vote elements to that and the chairs.

Hi i think this is a great idea. Maybe if there are many cracks and deep cracks clear resin could be used to fill the gap then add gold leaf and add more resin on top. Or add gold leaf to the resin and pour it in. !!

Wahoo!!! He's back!! Love the idea! wonder if it could be done in silver. With the CA glue it probably would never tarnish...Oh the ideas are spinning!!! Hope you have a fantastic 2021!!
@BurkeMakesStuff4 жыл бұрын
Hey bro! You’re just need to check the possible chemical reactions between silver and whatever CA glue you’re using. Inevitably, in time, it will tarnish, but encasing it in epoxy might work! Have a great 2021!

I freeze wood to -20⁰F, apply two part epoxy and hammer in gold or silver dead soft wire before heating the wood to 45⁰f and wetting it with water and using a heat gun on low to swell the grain.
@BurkeMakesStuff2 жыл бұрын
Why the temp changes?
@LiefWezeman Жыл бұрын
@@BurkeMakesStuff I'm just assuming here, but I think they're relying on the expansion and contraction of the wood as the temperature changes to secure the wire.

Why not use gold powder pigment in epoxy?
@BurkeMakesStuff Жыл бұрын
Because I had Starbond and goldleaf on hand. I’m sure you could use epoxy and pigment. Not sure it would look as good though, as pigment in epoxy looks different than the texture provided by the “stuffed” gold leaf. I like it, but do whatever you like!

Some thoughts here on the 3 laws of Merch. 1: Sell merch if the merch inspires you, and you enjoy making/designing it. 2: Sell merch that inspires others, so long as it doesn’t interfere with law #1. 3: Design and make merch as an extension of your channel’s vision and mission statement, so long as it doesn’t interfere with laws #1 & 2.

Love your videos and this one has given me some ideas to try in the future. If you decide to do merchandise, check out Bunker Branding. They do merch for a number of KZbin folks. The people that own it are Matt and Mere Carriker. Matt has several channels himself, Off The Ranch, Vet Ranch (he's a veterinarian) and Demo Ranch. I have no affiliation with them just know about the company. Good luck with the project if you go that way. No matter what, don't stop with the videos!

No on major merch. If you want to go to route of like rex kruger/katz and do tools that makes sense. But i think moving $100 of shirts a month or less...is that worth it. When channels at 1m subscribers then the economy of scale makes more sense but id still not do hats shirts. Stickers for toolboxes card scrapers or something like that seems more valuable. Should be gearing audience to patreon as you grow. Build community and bring us 10$ of value for $5 a month. Free plan here there but most things i join are to ask for help and seek feedback.
