Excellent summary and comments. Read and hear about Gini / Inequality all the time and now i understand its true definition and limits.

Wow, you went with the 1914 citation in Italian and not the 1921 citation in English: Gini, Corrado (1921). "Measurement of Inequality and Incomes". The Economic Journal 31: 124-126. And I did not know the formula ca. 15:15. Thanks for posting that. Sadly my data are not in that format. FWIW, in Canada there is practice of measuring income before tax and after tax. These are available in the 2016 Census of Population at multiple administrative scales, though I'm not sure how widely available those are to the general public given Statistics Canada's asinine data restrictions.

This is so interesting. I’m from Slovenia, and here it is not unusual (it may even be a mainstream opinion) for people to claim that after market economy was introduced (we were part of Yugoslavia before 1991) social inequality has become unbearable .

Here is a pretty recent article discussing Slovenia and OECD inequality. The data I had was pretty old, but seems like Slovenia is still pretty equal. www.sloveniatimes.com/slovenia-has-one-of-lowest-income-inequality-rates-in-oecd

Yes it is equal. What I find interesting is the perception of a population on the matter.

Yes, I agree with you.

Thank you very much for the good explanation, I heard it for the first time on Jordan Peterson's video talk. Gosh, Sweden has the lowest inequality coefficient in his example, and yet there is much unequality here!

Is there any chance you could provide links to where the necessary data to make Lorenz curves is available? How were you able to compile the curves down to the county level? Is that sort of information available at the U.S. Census Bureau?

how can we establish the relationship between GDP and Gini coefficient ?
How did you get data from specific counties? I know the census has this data, but I don't see how their data can be used the way they display it.

I have a webpage with a video and lots of other documentation about how to do it. Long story short- you can't really do it accurately these days because of the government's abandoning the long-form census data. main.burkeyacademy.com/home/gini-coefficients
