That’s one of the busiest malls around. Two reasons, it’s at the intersection of two busy highway’s, and within a 15-20 minute drive from some of the wealthiest towns in the state. It’s pretty much busy every weekend, for weekday lunch, and weekday evenings.

I grew up in Bedford and often went to the Burlington mall as a child and later a teen. The mall as it is today (I was there last weekend) is still really active and nowhere near being a dead mall. In fact, it had a bunch of stores that I never see in most malls because they’re the first stores to leave when the mall is dying. Compare it to say the Solomon Pond mall where there is not a single restaurant other than what’s in the food court, and Burlington mall looks super active. Not only does the Burlington Mall have multiple restaurants outside the food court, but they’re all high-end nice restaurants. All of the Solomon Pond mall’s restaurants closed.

Primark & Sears did coexist in this mall at one point. Similar to South Shore Plaza, Sears reduced their store size to the first floor to make way for Primark. Sears made this joint venture with Primark for a few of their other locations before.

This mall does very well and its usually very busy and very safe. I have been going there since I was a kid and now I take my kids there. A lot of cash flows through the mall to justify the high end stores and remodel - as example note that black SUV in front of you at the end of the video is a Aston Martin DBX ~150k+

I live in New Hampshire, near another Simon Mall, Pheasant Lane, but use to live in Massachusetts, and frequented the Burlington Mall especially when my mother worked at the Macy's. The Burlington Mall is the crown jewel of Simon malls in the Greater Boston Area. The mall has always done well and is why they continue to re-invest in it. I would like to see Simon do much more to invest in its other malls such as the Pheasant Lane Mall (Nashua, NH), The Mall at Rockingham Park (Salem, NH) in and the Mall of New Hampshire (Manchester, NH)

You're correct, the hall at the beginning was inside the Sears. Part of the Sears space also contained the Sears Tire/car maintenance shop where you could either service your car, service your yard tools like lawn moers, assemble your new bicycle, or put air in your bike tires etc. while you shopped or ate in the food court etc. My mom used to have them rotate the car tires before the winter while shopping.

This Mall is fine. It's part of the 4 Malls that support Metro Boston including Natick, South Shore in Braintree and North Shore in Peabody. These 4 are pretty much ok. Natick will struggle the most because it's the furthest from route 128. It also has competition from Chestnut Hill and Dedham shopping areas

I consider this mall to be the best in MA right now for the average shopper and last time I was there I had a hard time finding parking. It was a weekend earlier this year and I had never seen it so packed in years. I actually worked around there for years, the area is thriving. There is so much industry, housing and grocery shopping options around that I don't see this mall dying anytime soon. In fact it has gotten better since the pandemic and they were going to open a UNIQLO last time I went which is a good sign. Across the street from the mall is also one of the largest and nicest Barnes and Noble in the area. The Natick Barnes and Noble cannot compare.

Burlington Mall is thriving in 2024; good anchor stores and as you had mentioned, it's a mid to high end which caters to many people, especially given the location in MA where there are wealthy communities and the proximity to local highways makes it easily accessible. It gets especially busy during lunch hour, and very busy on weekends. It's funny you found one of the elevators broken down, it's nearly always the case that one of those two are shut down for repair! Unfortunately for this mall, those are the only two elevators outside of the anchor stores (Nordstrom and Macy's) so families with strollers or those in wheelchairs are really out of luck when it comes to accessibility. Also, the Cheesecake Factory by Macy's is ALWAYS busy.

Yeah that used to be Sears (where you entered). That Sears even had an autocenter too that is now a Crate & Barrel I think. But it's a pretty popular mall. A lot around it. There used to be a Rainforest Cafe and get this - a Mrs. Fields Cookies there! Other shops it used to have were a Disney Store and I believe a WB one too & Johnny Rockets but those are of course all gone. This mall though I went to for the first time in a while in a recent holiday season and what struck me in general were the amount of 'junk stores' - stores dedicated to burning money with pop-culture and nostalgic items. Stores that sell overpriced vinyl records, etc. I think there were like 4 or 5 in this mall alone.

When I was going there last year (I worked in Lexington, MA) area the mall was a lot busier. Still lots of teens going inside esp. to the third floor food court (which was packed.) My main grouse is I can never figure out where the MBTA 350 bus picks up and drops off outside the mall. So I always have to walk around the outside of the whole mall to ask people where they saw the mbta pick up and drop off going in the correct direction. Usually I just cave in and order Uber or Lyft.

10:18 there used to be a huge fountain about 15 feet in front of the escalators. The water jet would reach the 2nd floor. They took it out maybe around 1995. The photo at 10:08 looks exactly like a mini one that used to be in front of Sears. It also was taken out I'd say between 1995-2000.

Great video. You are right about that entry way. It was a big SEARS store. I frequently visited that mall since my middle school years. I witnessed the second level being built. Usually on the weekdays, what you’re seeing is what it is. On the weekends, it’s far more crowded than this - even outside of the holiday seasons. I don’t remember a Stop and Shop there. But, I could be wrong. A lot of tenants have come and gone over years and for various reasons. But, that’s true of other malls. My memory is foggy concerning the water fountain, but I think it was about where you thought it might have been. By the way, if I remember correctly, Macys bought what remained of Jordan Marsh.

I remember walking to the Burlington mall when it was only one floor and a rectangle. Bradlees was across the street, and nothing but Victoria Station and Chili's was on the other side of Middlesex. Now it's just nuts on that side of town. Thankfully, the commercial is separated from the residential, completely different feel growing up and living here.

Actually strangely enough, the women's restrooms down that hall are the are in the exact same place that they were located in Sears. They have the same layout and configuration and everything, they just built a new door on the opposite side of the room and updated the fixtures. Not very interesting I know, but it's something I noticed 😅

I'd say the Simon-esque look present at this mall is fairly typical for the malls we have here in the UK, in fact it'd probably be above average by our design standards (we do have a lot bigger a proportion of live malls though). The coffee shop at 18:20 is Caffe Nero which is actually a fairly large British chain, however the biggest coffee chains in the UK are Costa and Starbucks, with Costa having only recently moved into the US. Appreciate the close-up of the original Build-A-Bear store design at 32:27, worth having the air-con broken if it means keeping that nice old design!

23:00 Its hard to tell in this food court if some of the storefronts (like K Style and Regina Pizzeria) are just closed but opening in the later hours, or closed permanently. Regardless, the food court look like (to me) it only has one or two vacant storefronts, so I would tend to believe the Burlington Mall is not dead, but thriving if it has this many food places. A dead mall would be lucky to have three food places to offer at most in their food court.

As someone who lives in Burlington, about a mile from the mall. I'll tells a few things about it. The Primary opened above the Sears when Sears was still a thing. Like I said I'm from Burlington, and I have zero interests in that place anymore. Is way to high end now. I consider it the Lexington mall,in Burlington. Its a tourist trap on the weekends, especially in the winter. And I'm shocked the Johnny Rockets isn't there anymore. Since I'm commenting before I finished the video. The malls claim to fame. It was the primary filming location for the movie Mall Cop.

I remember the Burlington Mall back before all of the renovations. If my memory is correct, the fountains were in the end sections (near Sears & Jordan Marsh). I don't remember the Stop & Shop. There was a 2-screen General Cinemas movie theater where, I believe, the food court now is. The theater closed when the multi-screen complex opened across the street. I haven't been to the Burlington Mall since the Microsoft Store closed a few years ago. I think "The North Face" store is where the Microsoft Store used to be. But, yes, the Burlington Mall, from what I can see when I drive past it, seems to be holding up quite well at a time when walk-around malls are failing. I know of four walk-arounds in the area that were dead in the water, closed, became strip malls, reopened and are now doing quite well for themselves. One of them is just east of the Burlington Mall. It is called the Middlesex Commons. Another is the Meadow Glen Mall in Medford. That mall was originally a 2-screen drive in theatre. As a walk-around mall it was in bad shape. Now as a strip-mall, it is doing quite well. The third mall is the Woburn Mall. The last time I went in before the renovation, only a few of the stores were open (including Market Basket). Now that the mall was changed & expanded, it also looks to be doing very well. The fourth is an "*". That would be the Assembly Square Mall in Somerville. The original mall was across the street from industrial-based establishments such as Graybar. The area was completely transformed into the high-end retail stores there today. The old K-Mart anchor is long gone. Staples is still there, and all of the high-end shops, movie theater, business offices & apartments are across the street. The last time I went to the Staples (a while back), I had a tough time finding a parking spot.

A few quick comments ... Right now for the holidays the mall is very busy. One thing I give them credit for is they always have a very "authentic" looking Santa for kids to get their pictures with. Compared to most food courts, Burlington's has usually featured several eclectic choices, like a cupcake stand where you could get your cupcakes shot full of ice cream. The restaurant with Indian food has been there for years, and the last time I was there I saw a place that serves Korean street food. There's also the only Chick-fil-A in the surrounding area. There are a couple of restaurants that are accessible only from the outside of the mall, like The Friendly Toast. Where The Friendly Toast is (on the floor beneath the food court) there used to be a cinema. I disagree that the new wing has better ambience than the rest of the mall. The ceilings are plain and to me it feels closed off and a little claustrophobic. Because Primark is upstairs, though, they didn't have much choice.

It's still has Jordan marsh sort of speaking with Macys. That mall would be hurting without that store. It is a sin what happened to Sears but that's another story. As I understand it, the Burlington mall and the surrounding shopping areas were all gravel pits repurposed into shopping areas. There used to be a busy movie cinema located at the mall I hated to see that go. I was shocked to learn that there was a Stop & Shop there before my time. I remember as a teenager visiting the records stores and the Spencer gifts store with all the black light posters. There was a really good sporting goods store that also closed. I hope the malls survive in some form. I don’t want to be left with only Walmart, Target and Amazon.

What happened to Sears is their own doing. I'm not sorry after so many rip-offs and bad service I got from them. I could make a list but that would be boring.

While it's lost anchor stores, and the upper level can feel quiet, I vote for "very not dead". Burlington Mall is probably the busiest mall in the northern half of the Boston metro area. I haven't seen it packed to Christmas-in-the-1990s levels in a long time, but the parking lot does fill up and there are usually more people there than in the video. Turning the Sears location into a whole mall area with smaller shops was an interesting choice and it seems to have paid off.

The concept of indoor malls will survive. The industry opened way too many of them because everyone wanted in for the "Easy Money". We baby boomers aged out and we drove the creation of these places. Not gone or retired we have less reasons to hit these places as frequently as we did in our prime. I expect it will be quality and not quantity that keeps some open. The consumer will just have to travel a bit farther.

Cinema I & II was located where the food court is now. Around the time they built the second floor, General Cinema (now AMC) Burlington opened across the street with 10 theaters, so they closed and gutted the old cinema. Waterstone's bookstore was on the first floor, and the food court was opened above it on the second floor. The original mall entrance there wasn't very big; I don't even remember if there was a food court at the time. I am surprised that there's no second-floor entrance to Macy's. But when Jordan Marsh was there, it actually had a third sales floor. I think it's just Macy's store offices now.

That is my local mall. What you are starting at is the entirety of the old Sears store. I do like the array of stores but tis a shame of what that all replaced :( | The mall sure had it's fair share of renovations since at least 2020 which I do like the new renovations. It's basically what you'd expect from Simon

In this mall today, I think it's doing pretty well. Yes like the natick mall, it has a wing where there are some vacant storefronts and we have some broken escalators, other than that, it's a healthy mall. And yes, and out of service escalator or two and a few vacant storefronts is normal. By the way, there is a fondue restaurant moving into the entrance next to the cheesecake factory.

4:12 where Frank Pepe’s pizza is currently located that space was formerly occupied by UNO’s Chicago Pizza. They closed in either 2019 or 2020. Frank Pepe’s I believe moved in around late 2020 or early 2021.

I grew up not far from this mall. Obviously in the 80's-90's it was packed. I remember it well. Moved about an hour from here after getting married. The first time I went here in over 20+ years was about 2 weeks ago on a Sunday and it was packed. I just have lost to thrill of mall shopping now. Same stores, same crap. Maybe I'm getting old. lol I'd rather shop online. Sign of the times.

I have a very low opinion of Simon as a company but to give them due credit, they have the shopping center business cornered and seem to be stable. You can be assured that if Simon owns it, it is not a dead mall. Simon will dump any declining malls asap! Nice video.

@@MutedGrowl I've been at my company for about a year and a half. I've now been there once to do some Christmas shopping but really am not a mall guy. One of my coworkers would go there to grab lunch once in a while but I usually bring my own lunch. I also only go in once a week since I live 80 miles away so I don't have as much opportunity to go there as someone who lives closer.

If you do flea markets. Try the swap meat at New England Dragway in Epping New Hampshire. Usually the last Sunday of the month, unless there's a major event planned like the NHRA New England nationals usually in June.

I live in Lowell, but take the bus down to the mall just to get away from the "grit". The town of Burlington has done a superb job creating not only the space for this retail mecca, but even outside of the mall on Cambridge Street. and the surrounding area, there is SO MUCH to choose from in terms of shops and restaurants. There's even a little "neighborhood across from the mall that has some apartments, more restaurants and a big Wegman's store that boasts a really nice "food court" of it's own. In back of the mall, yet another variety of shops and eats, namely Tavern In The Square. Pheasant Lane in Nashua and Rockingham Mall in Salem, both in NH but not far, can't even compare. There's talk of casinos at the NH malls...totally a bad decision in my opinion. But yeah, I would so move to Burlington if I had the green. It's a safe place.

DEFINITELY a healthy mall, but risks up ahead. But with that number of floors, I worry about this place by the end of the decade... Foot traffic is lacking, I hope the owners know what they are doing. Nice history, nice looking place.

This mall is far from in trouble. It’s always busy and parking is atrocious. In fact, even during the weekday a certain parking lot in front of Nordstrom is filled within thirty minutes of the store being open. I’m at this mall at least once a week and parking is my biggest frustration.

They need some real stores ..... stores that sell stuff we need: a hardware store, a grocery store, a movie theater, post office, DMV office, a liquor store, a CVS; and a Walmart, Costco, and Home Depot could be the anchor stores. Throw in a realtor or two, a couple dentists, a 'quickie health-stop', a garden nursery, a car dealer, a hobby shop, and an internet cafe. I guarantee a mall with these stores would rock!
