6:00: No detour. NP/BN Wallace Branch trains used MILW tracks between Haugen and St. Regis MT after its tracks washed out in the ~1920s-30s.

I had a great uncle who worked for CB&Q out of Savanna Illinois. When I had to go to Chicago to join the military, he accompanied me and we rode the CB&Q. This was in 1966. By 1970 there were no passenger trains.

my dad was in freight management at the GN Western HQ at 4th and Union in downtown Seattle. The largest percentage of all phases of the 4 entities lobbied for the new merger line to be called The Great Northern Pacific. But by a number of slight of hand moves, the CB & Q brass came up with the BN name, and it stuck. Management was originally to be GN, but as you note a former NP and then CB&Q president became the new BN leader. Thousands of pissed off GN, NP and SP&S workers were not happy about the name or the new leadership.

The gov't could help sweeten the kitty to make operating passenger trains more feasible.

I think that when railroads merge the merging lines should be required to each operate a passenger train . They should be required to give back to the communities they operate in. Good video.

Sounds good in theory, but it may not always work out in real life

Unions ruined a lot of things

The GN merger was a absolute mistake. BN ruined any hope for restored steam and the later BNSF really put the nail in the coffin for us. Lost most shippers local in my state where GN ran plus rail traffic is all exports of our grain to sino-soviet china

A lot of union rules have helped ruin the railroads.
