Burned Firefighter Receives Face Transplant

A Mississippi firefighter who received the world's most extensive face transplant after a burning building collapsed on him said Wednesday that he feels like "a normal guy" for the first time in 15 years.

The face transplant actually made him 20 years younger than he looks at mid 40's. It's amazing to think that with the way medical science is going, maybe by the time I turn 60 I can get a face transplant and look in my 30's

@@rafaelrosal. basically his immune system will reject the donor face if he doesn't take the pills. the donor face is made up of donor cells, which are made up of donor DNA. since that DNA does not match his own DNA, his body sees the donor tissue as a foreign object or invader, and tries to attack it and kill it. if he doesn't take the anti-rejection pills, the tissue will likely become infected and die, and may take him with it. these pills are essential for his survival. the only people in the world who would not have this problem is if an identical twin donated an organ to an identical twin. they have the same DNA, so there would not be a problem.

While I marvel at the stunning medical science and surgery I’m baffled how the patient deals with feeling this strangers face with his hands, how his face really feels intrinsically? Does it feel as though it’s a part of him or is there an almost indescribable sensation that he’s learning to get used to? So many questions. He gives me the impression of someone who feels guilt, or pity for the family of the dead person his new face came from at being an undeserving owner. His tone of voice is like someone who still has a long way to go to literally feel truly comfortable in someone else’s skin.

It’s a stunning piece of medical science. It’s mind boggling how far we’ve come to give new life to a face of the dead through someone who lost his own face after a horrific injury. 100 years ago, man had barely the tools and knowledge to operate on severely wounded and disfigured WW1 soldiers. They made all sorts of unusual contraptions and masks to help soldiers hide their terrible disfigurement. Now we can move a face of one person to the skull facia of another, it’s incredible. The Face Off movie is no longer fantasy nonsense, it’s very real and makes sense.

Face transplants kinda creep me out. I can't imagine someone having my dead loved ones face, although I wouldn't object if a loved one of mine wanted to donate their face to someone in need, just saying it would be weird but bittersweet because of course I miss my dead loved one but seeing their face on someone else to help them would fill me with joy and sadness at the same time. It would be nice to see my loved one live on in someone else but weird at the same time. I can see how it would make some ppl crazy seeing their dead loved ones face on someone else. Grief does terrible things to peoples minds.
